The Big Fix - September 29
On Saturday, September 29, Housing Assistance Corporation will host the Big Fix in the Town of Dennis. HAC is organizing teams of volunteers to do clean-up, landscaping and light home repair projects for seniors, veterans and disabled homeowners. This is the third year for this great community service event. This year's event will kick off at the Dennis Council on Aging and Senior Center at 8:30 a.m., and most houses will be finished by 1:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend half a day and make a real difference in the comfort, safety, and quality of life for these homeowners. Interested individuals and groups should sign up by Sept. 14. For further information, contact HAC's Volunteer Coordinator Mary Everett-Patriquin, at  volunteer@haconcapecod.org, or 508-771-5400, ext. 279.

Greetings!

It's time to be thinking ahead to our Annual Meeting on October 17th. This year's meeting promises to be very exciting, with a new meeting location, the Cape Cod Cultural Center. And, of course, we'll have our awards - which is where you come in. Please help us by nominating deserving individuals and businesses so that our award ceremony can be the best it can be.

A Volunteer Information Event

Monday, September 10

7:00-8:00pm

Come meet our partner family, project leaders, and other interested volunteers for our 80th Habitat home on Yellow Brick Road in Truro. The Kick-Off is a place to ask questions, learn about the project, and find out how to get involved. Bring your friends!

Our project at 13 Yellow Brick Rd. was initiated by a Truro non- profiit, Highland Affordable Housing. HAH garnered Town support for funding to purchase a site for an affordable home, conducted a land search, and conveyed a lovely parcel for Habitat to continue and complete the process of a home built with a local family in need. Read more about this project here.

Dear friends,

Nominations are now open through Tuesday September 11, for the three awards to be presented at our Annual Meeting.
Please review the categories listed below, and if you would like to put forward a name for any of these awards, email or call our office manager, Anne Correiri, office@habitatcapecod.org or 508 362 3559 x 10. Be sure to state the award category, full name of person or organization you are nominating and why you think they are deserving of the award this year.

Nominations close at noon on September 11.

Award Categories
GOLDEN HAMMER AWARD, to recognize exceptional contributions from a business that furthers our work in building simple decent homes in partnership with those in need.
HABITAT PARTNER AWARD, to honor one non-profit or public agency or Town to recognize exceptional contributions that further our work in building simple decent homes in partnership with those in need.
EVERETT STOYLE SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD honors one volunteer who through his or her service with Habitat exemplifies the generosity of spirit and willingness to serve that we associate with Habitat. Thus far this has been given to honor volunteers who have given of themselves over a significant period of time. It is not given to a current board member (and has at times gone to a couple).

Our few rules: 1) Current Board members are not eligible for an award. 2) No one may receive an award more than once. 3) It is fine to nominate someone who has been nominated in the past.
*** Please note: the Board votes on the nominations, and the most important information that they will have about the nominee is the information that YOU send in, with your nomination. Please be sure to describe why you are nomination this person (agency or business). ****

JulianUpdate on Julian Gabriel
This update is provided from Karen Moriarty, Julian's grandmother. We built a home in partnership with Julian and his mom, Kelley, in Dennis in 2010.

"Julian had his bone marrow transplant 2 weeks ago today, he has had the usual side effects, but nothing severe and is doing amazingly well with it. They used donated umbilical cord blood stem cells and as of today the donor cells are definitely working to make new blood cells for Julian. It will be a cautious next few months until he is able to get back to life as usual. Kelley and Julian will be going to the Ronald McDonald house up the street for the next few weeks as Julian will need to be at the clinic here quite a bit. He is taking an enormous amount of medication and some needs to be administered here by IV. We thank you all for your continued prayers and good thoughts and can't wait until Julian is able to come home to his Habitat home."

To follow Julian's progress, or to send his family a message in their guestbook, see his Caring Bridge page here. Donations to help Kelly  be near her son during his treatment can be made to the Julian Gabriel Benefit Fund at www.jamminforjulian.blogspot.com

Volunteer Spotlight
Cathy McMullen

Cathy McMullen knows a thing or two about volunteers. She was a Hospital Director of Volunteer Services for 20 years in New Jersey, before retiring to Cape Cod this past June. Cathy is no stranger to Habitat, as well. She calls Habitat her "favorite charity" and has worked on builds in Patterson, Tea Neck, and Princeton, New Jersey, as well spending time at a Global Village build in Belfast, Ireland - an experience she calls "life changing." Cathy remembers Belfast in 1998 as a safe city because of all the tanks patrolling, and she was moved to be there on the Easter Sunday when the peace accord was signed.

This July, Cathy saw a poster for our Mashpee Kick-Off event at her local hardware store, and found herself at the Kick-Off that same night. Shortly thereafter, she agreed to be the Coordinator of Registration Volunteers for the Mashpee build.
In Mashpee, Cathy witnessed her first Habitat Wall Raising. "I was in tears. You really see the passion of Habitat volunteers involved." Cathy says the one thing she has learned as a Habitat volunteer herself is that there "is something for everybody. At the registration table, you can even have a sit-down job, which my knees need right now." Cathy would love to have more registration volunteers working with her, so please contact us if you would like to join the registration team.

For more information about volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, contact Dawn Walnut - for both sit-down or stand-up jobs.  dawn@habitatcapecod.org or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.
