News In Brief

Thanks to Dick Roberts, Howard Taubner, Fred Thimme, DJ Sullivan, and Fred Dempsey for building this new handicap ramp at one of our Gomes Way homes to help with wheelchair access.
Joan and Dick Casey made their annual summer visit to Cape Cod and were quick to sign up to help out at the Bourne build site. Dick founded the Upper Cape Chapter of Habitat by putting a simple advertisement in the newspaper. Twenty years later, the Upper Cape Chapter is still going strong. The Certificate of Appreciation shown in this picture is well deserved.

Greetings!

It has been hot this summer - but that hasn't stopped our intrepid volunteers from building homes for three families on Cape Cod. Soon, we will be building two more Habitat homes. Here's an update on all that's going on at Habitat..
Mashpee Wall Raising
Volunteers on a build

Come and help us bless the walls at 24 Russell Road, with light refreshments to follow the ceremony. It is always a special moment when those first walls go up - don't miss it.

Truro Community Kick-Off

A Volunteer Information Event

Come meet our partner family, project leaders, and other interested volunteers for our 80th Habitat home on Yellow Brick Road in Truro. The Kick-Off is a place to ask questions, learn about the project, and find out how to get involved. Bring your friends!

Our project at 13 Yellow Brick Rd. was initiated by a Truro non- profiit, Highland Affordable Housing. HAH garnered Town support for funding to purchase a site for an affordable home, conducted a land search, and conveyed a lovely parcel for Habitat to continue and complete the process of a home built with a local family in need. Read more about this project here.

Bob Leary
Every Volunteer Has A Story
At a recent Upper Cape Chapter Meeting, Bob Leary shared a story about working with Dick Casey on scaffolding while building a house in Truro. The two of them wondered why they were getting lower and lower until they realized their scaffolding was sinking into the sand!

We know that every Habitat volunteer has a story to tell. What's yours? We'd love to hear it. Please share your story with Dawn Walnut, [email protected] or 508-362-3559 ex. 16.
Jean & Herb Ellis
Volunteer Spotlight
Herb Ellis has been a faithful member of our Bourne build crew since May 19th, the day of the Wall Raising. Herb arrived that day, and without stopping to ask for instructions, began to rake the ground clear and smooth of debris for the construction crew. Herb, 83, is a former farmer who used to build houses with a friend, but he claims he can no longer "hit a nail straight." But that hasn't stopped him from making himself useful at Flintlock Lane. His wife, Jean, describes him as a person who likes to keep busy and do something worthwhile: "he loves to help people." Herb works at the Bourne site for about three hours each morning and has put in over 25 volunteer hours. He sweeps floors, clears stray wood from the ground, moves trash to the dumpster, and paints house trim. When he's not working, he likes to drive by the site frequently to keep track of its progress. Jean Ellis also helps in her own way: as a retired United Methodist minister, Jean has provided devotions for the Bourne crew on two occasions. Jean and Herb are members of Swift Memorial Church, where they first learned of the nearby Habitat build. Herb decided right then and there he was going to take part. "I'm sure they'll have something I can do," he said. He sure was right.
