News In Brief

In Bourne, we have completed the first stage of construction: the exterior is complete and the house is weather tight. The site is now closed to volunteers while licensed contractors install electricity and plumbing. The interior will be ready for volunteers again in mid-September.

In Eastham, 1 Sandy Meadow Way is being shingled and the exterior will be completed by the end of August. 2 Sandy Meadow Way will soon have a roof. Work will continue on these two homes through the fall and into the winter.
We are delighted that Dave Kaczmarczyk has agreed to act as House Leader for our Russell Road, Mashpee build. Here, Dave and Bob Ryley talk with potential volunteers at the Mashpee Kick-off. We will be raising walls in Mashpee on August 25th, with the celebration scheduled for 1:30pm.

Greetings!

As we mark the halfway point of summer, we are right in the thick of volunteer construction on three of the five homes of this year's construction schedule. We raise walls on Russell Road in Mashpee on August 25, and the fall schedule for the Truro home will be announced in our next e-news. Thanks to all the volunteers and donors who make this work possible.
Remembering Lillian Kushner
Lillian Kushner, longtime Habitat volunteer and a former teacher, passed away on July 18th. Lillian was truly a favorite person here at Habitat. She was very straightforward, down to earth, and kind ..... a person with great empathy, insights, and a big heart. She helped with volunteer coordination, events, mailings, application selection, and was always ready to come by the office to help whenever and however she was needed. But she was really extra special as a volunteer "family partner," working one-on-one as a mentor and friend to several of our prospective and new homeowner families. She patiently guided them through a new and often daunting process, supporting their success in this new stage of their lives. She will really be missed. It was a privilege to have known her.

A remembrance service will be held at the Tea Room of the Borsari Gallery on Rt 6A in Dennis, MA on August 9th from 10 am to noon.

Thanks to Granite City Electric

As part of a new partnership with all Massachusetts Habitat Affiliates, Granite City Electric corporate headquarters is supporting 4 Habitat for Humanity Builds across the state this year. Our home at 1 Sandy Meadow Way is one of the grantees in this brand new program, where they are donating all the electric supplies and lighting needed for this three bedroom house.

Volunteer Spotlight
Some of our loyal volunteers and donors prefer to give of themselves anonymously. One such man, who is willing to share his story but not his name, has been helping out regularly twice a week at our Eastham build, despite that fact that he is on vacation. From a building family in New Zealand - his father is an architect, his grandfather a builder, and he himself owns his own construction company - he's assisting our crew in Eastham because he's always wanted to donate time to a Habitat build but has not had the resources to do so back home. He enjoys work where he can "step back and see what you've done. It's not like an office job where you can't see anything tangible." While on vacation to visit his fiancee (a Cape Codder he met at the Rugby World Cup), he has found helping Habitat more appealing than "drinking beer on the beach - I might as well do something constructive." And as a professional, he's been interested in seeing how American construction techniques differ from those back home. In New Zealand, houses must be built to withstand earthquakes, so the foundation and the house must flex, and would not be as rigid as the houses we build. Having professional volunteers work alongside other volunteers is an essential part of Habitat's mission. A professional can both teach and lead by example. John Kaar, House Leader for the Eastham build, says working with our international volunteer has been a "god-send - some days we've not had enough guys who want to work on the roof, but he's been right up there."
