Update from Haiti
| | All Habitat affiliates received a letter in mid-February from the Vice President of Haiti Recovery, Mark Andrews, reporting on his time in Haiti on Valentine's Day to help celebrate with 155 Haitian families left homeless by the 2010 earthquake as they took possession of their new Habitat houses in our Santo community in Léogâne. Click here to visit our web site and read Mark's letter.

Greetings! Things are very lively at Habitat for Humanity these days. The dedication of our 75th volunteer-built home takes place Sunday March 18, and we are hosting our church breakfasts around the Cape this month as well. Other events and important dates to save are listed below. Detailed preparation is in progress to prepare for our builds around the Cape this year. We are working to be ready to raise walls in Bourne in May, Eastham in June, Mashpee in late July ... (and we'll have more to share soon). The schedules will go up on VolunteerUP 3-6 weeks in advance, and of course, we will be having kick-off events in each community to welcome new and continuing volunteers, and to introduce our new family partners. So, please read on for some of what's happening around the Cape (and the world). I look forward to seeing you soon - on the site, at breakfast, at the ReStore ... Warmly, Vicki Goldsmith Executive Director |

Training Opportunities for volunteers interested in learning more and gaining certification in Early Response Training.*
To All Friends of Habitat -
As many of you are aware from the past, Habitat has been involved in Disaster Relief work for the last six years. For five years, starting shortly after Katrina, a group of 25-40 people from Habitat and Northside UMC went to Mississippi and Texas to help rebuild. This past Oct., 50 people from the two groups spent a week in Monson, MA doing rebuilding. (The June tornado ripped a 1/2 mile by 30 mile gap through five-six communities.)
On Saturday, April 28, 8:30-5:00 pm, we have the opportunity to gain some accreditation to further our disaster relief response abilities. At the Northside UMC, 701 Airline Rd, on the Brewster/Dennis line, a trainer from the United Methodist Committee on Relief will offer an Early Response Training (ERT) session and certification. This is being offered in partnership between Northside and Habitat. It is open to all who are interested.
There is a $25 cost for lunch, refreshments, manual, t-shirt and certification. The certification is non-denominational and allows the bearer into disaster areas where otherwise you would be turned away from this early level of disaster response. The hope is that many "Habitaters" will take the course, if for no other reason than to get the overall training and certification. The larger hope is to create a Cape-wide cadre of local responders to join together as a team when called upon to go to an area when disaster calls.
Northside UMC has recently purchased a relief responder's trailer and stocked it with tools for such a purpose. There is a need for at least 15 people to be on emergency call when such a need arises. We can respond to whatever situation we feel we can handle in relation to the composition of the team.
Please sign up now by calling the Habitat office and registering. For more info, contact Fred Yarger at 774-212-1851 or yargerfred@gmail.com.
* Please note that while Habitat for Humanity stays focused on repairing and building homes, we are pleased to publicize this training opportunity to our volunteer corps, knowing there is a high interest in raising skills to participate closely with activities such as emergency response.
