"For Every Kid..."

Welcome to Fresno/Madera Youth for Christ

Greetings!

Social media is everywhere - from news organizations' updates to pop stars' Twitter feeds. There is a phrase that we like to use here at YFC:  "Geared to the Times, Anchored to the Rock".  This summarizes YFC's trajectory. In the age of social media we are there...Fresno/Madera Youth for Christ has a Facebook page which is regularly updated with pictures and posts about the ministry. Campus Life uses Facebook and Twitter to get out the word on events. And our website, www.yfcnow.org, is getting a facelift.  All of these media platforms help us to stay connected with kids.

YFC always works to build relationships with kids - using media where it is needed, but always seeking to engage kids in person. By sharing life with them over coffee or a snack, we are able to speak into their lives in a way that no social media site can.

Check out the following article to see what teens are saying about social media and its role in their lives.

Social Media, Social Life: How Teens View Their Digital Lives

A Common Sense Media Research Study - NEW REPORT

This research study provides a snapshot of how U.S. teens experience the role of social media in their social and emotional lives. Using survey data from a nationally representative, probability-based sample of 13- to 17-year-olds, we address these questions:

  • How often are teens texting and using Facebook and Twitter?
  • What are teenagers' favorite ways to communicate with their friends and family?
  • How do teens think these new communications tools are affecting their friendships and family relations, if at all?
  • How does social networking make most teens feel about themselves and their relationships with their peers? Does it make them feel more connected or more isolated? Better about themselves, or more depressed and lonely?
  • How do the heaviest social media users compare to other teens in terms of their social and emotional well-being?

From the Executive Director

I am on Facebook (won't you be my friend?) but I am a "minimalist user".  I want to glimpse what is going on in my network of family, friends, and colleagues, but I certainly don't want to live there.  How quickly can I get online, make connections, gather all the latest important info, and get back off line?  As my network grows it gets more and more difficult.  Time gets spent on Facebook - digital relationships - becomes detrimental to real relationships.  With kids, our staff and volunteers use the necessary media but we always emphasize real, face to face relationships.  In this new age it sometimes feels like we are swimming upstream - but then again, it has always felt that way in YFC!  Thanks for supporting our journey against the flow!
