Time for Week 14-- goodbye peaches and hello September.

Good news! Rich from Eshleman's called, and even though we weren't expecting it, he thinks he has one last big load of peaches available. To celebrate the fact that we even had peaches at all this year (all those early predictions of a crop failure didn't bode well), we are going to feature peaches one last time. Might be a good idea to put some away for days that are not quite as bright and not quite as long as now at the end of Summer--  you can buy extra peaches in bulk for jams, pies and for canning.

Also in this week's bag, we're featuring a whole chicken in the omnivore bags, and loads of other delicious veggies that are great roasted alongside or made into a fresh, raw summer salad-- fennel, green beans, sweet corn, and watermelon. Come up with anything great using just your bag contents? Please share on our Facebook page or send it into Cat to be included on our website or in a future newsletter.

Trevor's Corner

SWEET CORN

Each year we try to feature sweet corn for Labor Day's holiday weekend.  This year, we're managing it, but it was exceptionally hard to pull through.

As you may remember, early in the summer it seemed to rain and never quit raining. And when it rained, it rained over an inch at a time. Many of our farmers had the wettest or second wettest June and July in recorded history!

So much rain made it difficult for the farmers to harvest and nearly impossible for them to plant. Now nearly two months down the road, the impact of that weather is apparent. This week, we are scraping bare bottom to get enough sweet corn for this week's bag. Our one farmer, Kay, was expecting 15,000 dozen from a 5 acre field that was planted with the intent to harvest this week. Instead of 15,000 dozen, the corn took a very weak stand and he is hoping to get 2,000 dozen to fill our order. That's a big difference!

Similarly, we are now in the middle of a very dry spell. Holmes and Stark counties have barely seen rain all month. In Wilmot, one farm we work with has recorded 6/10 of an inch all month. Ouch!  Similar to the trials of too much wet weather, now the mini-drought makes it difficult to work the ground and plant fall vegetables and cover crops. It is also drying up the pastures and making grass scarce for grazing beef on. Just letting you in on the realities and difficulties of farm life-- and how the weather affects not just out commute, but all of the food we eat.

BAG BUDGETING

I try to stay fairly transparent with everyone as to how our business works. Fresh Fork works with nearly 100 area farms to assemble your weekly grab bags. Our budget is 65% of every dollar goes to the farmer and the 35% is designed to cover our overhead - trucks, fuel, staff, warehouse, marketing, spoilage, donations, etc.

We try to spread the budget out to give you equal bags, but there are certain times when some bags are much larger and others much smaller. We like to say that "not all weeks are created equal."  You've probably noticed lately that the bags have been really big and we have featured fruit for all 14 weeks this summer - the first time we have ever been able to do that!

As a result, however, we are way over budget for the season and this week's bag isn't really helping. I had intended to save the chickens for a few weeks later, but we can't move in our freezer and they need to move out!

Over the next few weeks, there will be some smaller bags to help us get back on budget. We are right now floating at 76% costs, so we have a lot of room to make up! Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
