Hi there

Welcome to Week 2 of your Summer Share.

We hope you enjoyed last week's bag-- the pork chops are some of my favorite items we carry. Paired up with all those tasty greens, they're a real treat.

In this week's bag, those of you receiving our Omnivore shares will get a chance to try one of my other favorite items: our whole chicken. We had a wonderful Chicken 101 class on Monday night, so thanks to all of you who made it out-- we hope everyone got a lot out of it!

A couple quick announcements regarding the nuts n' bolts of the program, before we get to the fun stuff, like Garlic Scapes!

Schedule your vacation for the following week by Saturday at midnight- at the latest.

We know that Summer is when many people take off and head to the beach. We might be a little jealous, but we won't hold it against you. You can take up to 4 weeks off during the Summer Share, and you get a bag's worth of credits to spend on good food when you return ($25 for a small, $40 for a large.) You have 4 weeks to spend those credits, then they reduce in value by half, so don't wait too long!

You just have to let us know by Saturday at midnight for your vacation to register for the following week.

You can reply to this email, call Lyn at 800-861-8582, tell one of our Greeters at the stop, or sign into your account here. If you're using our online system, click "Manage My Subscriptions" and then click on the Vacations tab. If you already have your dates for your end-of-Summer vacation, no need to wait-- you can schedule it right now.

If you forget to schedule a vacation but miss the stops, we're really sorry but we cannot refund you the week. We've already ordered your food and packed it up on the truck, so your best bet would be to call a friend or a neighbor to come get it for you (all they need is your name, and you get all the good-veggie-karma!)

Our bags are color-coded.

Last week was the first week of the share, and we're getting a bunch of bags back from last Summer's subscribers-- thanks for remembering!

However that might mean that some of you got the wrong color bag (but hopefully the right bag contents) as we fill our stock back up. Just a refresher:

Let your Greeter know which bag you should be getting in case you have the wrong color of bag to return.

This is also a great reminder to check your bag before you leave the stop. Our Packers are working really hard to make sure that each bag has all the right Kales and Radishes in it, but sometimes something is missed. Before you leave your stop, please take a moment to check through your bag and compare it to the Bag Contents List (the one in this email.) It's much easier to fix a mistake on the spot than over email!

Promotions

Short Date Milk & Pasta Sale

We have two sales this week that you can take advantage of in your Special Orders. We have a sale on short-dated milk-- Guernsey (sale price $2.75) and Snowville (sale price $3.50). "Short date" means that the "Sell By Date" is approaching, but the milk is still good for a little while. Great choice if you know you'll go through it in the next 5 days or so. Just a reminder that milk will keep longer when stored in the coldest part of your fridge (hint: not in the door.)

The second sale is on pasta-- we have a bunch of Ohio City Pasta that will be on sale for $3/lb. We have both Ramp and Whole Wheat Linguine, but it's all mixed together so unfortunately we cannot fill any requests for a particular variety-- consider it a surprise! Stock up and keep some extra in your freezer for a quick weeknight dinner.

Trevor's Corner: Chicken Time

For those of you who followed our Countdown to Summer emails (and if you didn't, find em here,) you know our birds live outside all the time. I stopped down and saw the chickens on Friday that will be in this week's bag. I was able to capture a couple cool pictures of them.

These are their "chicken tractors." It is a mobile pen with open floor that allows the birds to eat the grass, bugs, and seeds they find on pasture, as well as deposit their manure into the soil. The "tractors" are moved once per day for 9 weeks. At the end, you can see how the birds have eaten down the grass and deposited their rich manure back onto the pasture!

Because of all the fresh air, exercise, and foraged diet, these birds are incredibly tasty. We have a bunch more recipes at the end of this Newsletter, but here are some of Parker's notes on how to cook a whole chicken and make it last the week.
