Successful Sale of ISU Yearlings

In 2014, 14 foals owned by Iowa State University were born during the AnS 332 Equine course. The foals have grown up on campus and interacted with students as the primary model for learning in both AnS 317A (Behavior and Training of the Weanling) and most recently AnS 317B (Behavior and Training of The Yearling). Adolfo Arenas Experience at the Kentucky Equine Management Internship (Fall 2015)

Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI) is a 22-week internship with a spring and fall session. I did the fall session which is the yearling sales-prep/breaking and training. This is a very hands-on internship allowing one to get a lot of handling experience. During my time in Kentucky I learned how to prepare yearlings for the sales including everything feeding the proper diet, proper grooming, and daily

exercise routines. After the sales the breaking of yearlings begins. This is great for those who enjoy riding or would like to learn how to ride thoroughbreds. I rode in a galloping saddle for the first time ever while on my intern

ship. I came to this program with no thoroughbred background, but one is able to pick up quickly because of all the exposure one gets to the industry. I chose to apply for this internship because I was unsure of what I could do with an Animal Science degree. After this program I saw there is a plethora of careers to chose from that allow me to do what I enjoy, which is being around horses. I would highly recommend this to others with the same interest

Signed Liability Waiver Clears Equestrian Coach of Liability

Balking at a jump
The plaintiffs' daughter was a 17-year old equestrian competitor and the defendant was her coach/trainer.  The parties had executed a liability release form in which the daughter agreed to release the defendant from liability except for damages caused by the defendant's "direct, willful and wanton negligence."  During a competition, the daughter's horse struck a hurdle which caused the daughter to fall with the horse then falling on the daughter resulting in the daughter's death.
