Hay steaming is a viable management strategy for horses with respiratory conditions

Horses are highly sensitive to mold and dust, and hay and bedding can be a major source of these contaminants. A recent study conducted with horses at the University of Minnesota has examined the effects of hay steaming on mold and dust, forage nutritive values, and hay consumption, expressed on a dry-matter basis. This research, originally published in the Journal of Animal Science, shows that the hay steaming process can reduce total suspended particulates (TSP) and mold concentrations in moderately moldy hay and can be used to increase forage intake when feeding low-moldy hay. This can be a horse you have owned or a horse that in some way has impacted your life. The focus is on the horse so tell us as much about the horse as you can. All stories must be no more than 1 typewritten page, include a photo of the horse and contact information of the person submitting the story. For More Information

Apps for Horse Owners

The Hay Price Calculator app is now available for Android users in the Google Play Store!  The Hay Price Calculator is also available for Apple products (iPhone and iPads) and was developed to help horse owners buy hay the smart way; the app converts price per bale to price per ton.  Hay buyers enter the bale weight and price, and price per ton can be calculated for small square-bales, large square-bales and round-bales, allowing the buyer to compare and choose the most economical hay type.

A second app, "Healthy Horse"allows horse owners and professionals the ability to estimate the body weight of adult Arabians, stock horses, saddle horses, ponies and miniature horses by entering in the equine's height, body length, neck and girth circumference. Ideal body weight and a body weight score can also be calculated for Arabians, ponies and stock horses from newly developed University research. The apple version is available and the Android version is expected by the end of December 2013.

Most horse owners understand the potential issues with horses being too thin, but may not be aware of the issues associated with the other extreme. Following this session, horse owners will be able to assess if their horse is over or underweight, and have strategies to manage their overweight horses.
