News from the Equine Farm
At Prairie Meadow's Iowa Classic night on August 3, a 2 year old mare - Haforuhaforme born at Iowa State won her second race in 2 starts! The filly by Bravo Bull out of Indian Heiress was a favorite for the Iowa Sorority and she was able to capture the win. With her Stakes win, her earnings are $73,054 putting her in the running for the 2013 Iowa 2 Year old Filly of the Year. New Construction - Additional Horse Housing
A 20-stall barn is being built south of campus on the old dairy property. The barn will house mares and stallions. Young stock will still be kept on campus. In addition mares will still foal on campus in the heated barn.

Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center Live Web Camera
The Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center Web Camera is available. Plans for the facility include an indoor 125-foot-by-250-foot arena with seating for 1,000 people, a set of classrooms and a conference room. The center will be a versatile, multipurpose resource for courses, labs, training programs, student club and judging team activities, and public events.

Two Mobile Apps for iPhone and iPads
Two mobile apps for use with iPhone and iPads have been developed for the horse industry by a group of University of Minnesota faculty. The apps are "Hay Price Calculator" and "Healthy Horse" Android versions of both apps are expected out in December 2013. More Information

These are hay prices paid at auction in the recent past weeks. Much of the price information is obtained from USDA Hay Market News. No matter what you believe it is good to know what is happening with horse processing. Valley Meat Co. in New Mexico, and Responsible Transportation in Sigourney, Iowa, have satisfied all federal requirements under the Federal Meat Inspection Act with the intent of opening horse slaughter facilities. This legally requires the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) to grant inspection, subsequently relaunching the horse slaughter industry in America. Share Your Agricultural Story
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History is asking the public to help preserve the recent history of farming and ranching across the United States. Visitors can share their stories about the technologies and innovations that have changed agricultural work, as well as how these changes have affected their communities. The museum hopes to build a comprehensive digital archive of modern agriculture through user-submitted user-submitted personal stories, photos, videos, audio files, and other ephemera. Midwest and Great Plains Drought Update Webinar

The NOAA Central Region office, along with key regional partners (National Drought Mitigation Center, State Climatologists, USDA and USFWS) are holding monthly webinars on the 3rd Thursday of each month to improve communication about regional drought and climate conditions, impacts, and outlooks. Information on wildfires, streamflow, snowpack and other climate variables are discussed. In addition, outlook information from official NOAA forecasts is detailed. These webinars are intended for a broad range of participants including local and state government, federal agencies, NGOs, tribes, academics, students and private interests.

USDA extends haying period in 35 Iowa counties
The U.S. Department of Agriculture agreed to give some Iowa farmers more time to take advantage of emergency haying in the state because hot, dry weather has made it hard for some producers to feed their animals. Continue Reading
