| Webinar by SBE on BXF: Improving Broadcast Operation Workflow | |
SBE members - $49 ; non-members - $75
Do you feel the pain caused by decades-old interfaces that are tough to maintain, and not well-suited to today's demands for more open, dynamic interaction between systems? Are you being asked to do more, but with fewer resources? Chris Lennon, who is known as the father of SMPTE's Broadcast eXchange Format, also known as BXF, will be presenting a Webinar by SBE exploring BXF.
BXF was first published about four years ago. Since then, the broadcast industry has embraced it. Hundreds of implementations have been successfully completed, and BXF is well on its way to being the de facto method of connecting systems such as Traffic, Automation, and Asset Management.
Chris Lennon has been in the broadcasting business for over 25 years, and is known as the father of the widely-used Broadcast eXchange Format (BXF) standard. He also serves as Engineering Director for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and is a media industry consultant. Click here for more information and to register. |

SBE certifications that require experience
| |
Last month I went over the entry-level certifications that don't require any experience in order to take an SBE certification exam. This month, I want to give you some certification options if you have been working in the broadcasting engineering field.
Keep in mind that you may apply for the following certifications when you qualify for them. You do not need to do one level before going onto the other.
FIVE YEARS
If you have five years of broadcast engineering or related technology then you may want to look into taking the following exams: Certified Broadcast Radio Engineer, Certified Broadcast Television Engineer, Certified Audio Engineer or Certified Video Engineer. These exams consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and are open book with an allotted 3 hours of exam time. Passing score for the CBRE, CBTE, CEA and CEV is 70%. For more information on the CBRE and CBTE and suitable substitutions for experience and applications click here
http://www.sbe.org/sections/CBRE_and_CBTE.php.
For CEA and CEV inquiries click here - http://www.sbe.org/sections/CEA_and_CEV.php.
TEN YEARS
If you currently have 10 years of broadcast engineering or a related technology experience, consider applying for the Certified Senior Radio Engineer or Certified Senior Television Engineer. These exams also consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and are open book but they also contain an essay question. The essay question is closed book, but the multiple-choice portion is open book. Passing score for the CSRE and CSTE is a combined score of 84%. For more information on the CSRE and CSTE certifications and suitable substitutions for experience and applications click here - http://www.sbe.org/sections/CSRE_and_CSTE.php.
TWENTY YEARS
If you already hold a senior certification or a Professional Electrical Engineer's license and have 20 years of service in broadcast or related technology, you may obtain Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer without taking an exam. Applicants must supply three letters of reference along with other backup material with the appropriate application. For more information on the CPBE requirements and the application, click here - http://www.sbe.org/sections/CPBE.php.
If you are interested in any of the other SBE certifications not mentioned here, please go to the SBE website, or contact Certification Director, Megan Clappe.

| | The 8-VSB channel spectrum, taken from the 8-VSB course. |
The purpose of the SBE University online course on 8-VSB is to give the student an overview of the 8-VSB system from end to end, providing all the basic information he or she will need to understand the nature of 8-VSB modulation and to recognize deficiencies in the transmitted signal. This information will be invaluable in installing, maintaining and operating a digital television transmitter facility. Much of the material contained in this course will aid the student in his or her efforts to obtain the SBE 8-VSB Certification.
The course has 14 chapters, and includes graphics, a glossary, quiz questions, and a final exam. Subjects include an introduction to 8-VSB, video compression, DTV audio, active format description, PSIP, 8-VSB signal and channel occupancy, the 8-VSB transmitter, 8-VSB spectral display and mask, television power and DTV service areas.

SBE Technical Presenters Group - technical experts available for your program |
The Society of Broadcast Engineers invites select industry professionals to be a part of the Society's Technical Presenters Group. For a reasonable fee and travel expenses, groups such as state broadcasters associations, broadcasting companies, SBE chapters and others have the opportunity to include one of these presenters in their engineering conference, or as a trainer for their engineering staff. Speakers from the SBE Technical Presenters Group are generally available to speak across the country.
"Chapter 53 arranged to have Wayne Pecena, CPBE, present a day-long session on IP Networking earlier this year. The SBE made it easy to bring an experienced, knowledgeable presenter to our area, and our members felt it was worth the time and money." - Jim Leifer, CPBE, member of SBE Chapter 53
Presentations can last from as little as one hour to a full-day. For more information on this program, or to arrange a presentation for your group, contact Kimberly Kissel, SBE Education Director. Current topics include: FCC Enforcement Actions - an Analysis of Broadcast Violations, with Dennis Baldridge
