Re-certification - Start Now!

The SBE National Certification Committee has produced a brochure that you can use to help keep track of the activities you have completed during the 5 years of your SBE certification.

There is also an  excel spreadsheet that you may use if you prefer to keep track on your computer.

Access the brochure or excel spreadsheet here.

If your certification expires January 1, 2013, please fill out the re-certification application and send it in to maintain your SBE certification.

Upgrade your SBE Certification
If you currently hold a Certified Senior Radio Engineer (CSRE) or a Certified Senior Television Engineer (CSTE) certification and you have worked in the industry for at least 20 years, you may want to consider upgrading to the Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer (CPBE). There is no exam involved. You can find more information about the CPBE and applications here.

Webinar by SBE on Chief Operator Responsibilities
October 17 -2-3:30 p.m. ET

with Dennis Baldridge, CPBE, 8-VSB, AMD, DRB, CBNT

SBE members - $49; non-members - $69

Many chief operators come to this position with limited technical background; others are proficient with the technical aspects but are unfamiliar with all the requirements. The next Webinar by SBE titled "Chief Operator Responsibilities - What should I be doing?" outlines the specific duties required of a chief operator and the FCC requirements behind them. Topics include the station's chief operator designation, administrative responsibilities, technical responsibilities, accuracy responsibilities, communication requirements and authentication requirements.  In addition, sample templates of required documents will be provided.

Entry-level certifications - no experience required
Are you new to the broadcast engineering field?

There are four entry-level certifications that may appeal to you.

If you are a working operator who wishes to certify your skills and knowledge or if you wish to become certified as your entry into the world of broadcasting then the Certified Television Operator (CTO) or Certified Radio Operator (CRO) certification may be right for you.

SBE Certification is not an FCC requirement, but it is evidence of an individual's qualifications to serve as an operator at a broadcast station and will be useful when seeking employment or career advancement. Many television and radio stations, as well as colleges and a couple of high schools in the country, use the operator books and certification as a requirement.

If the operator level of certification does not appeal to you then take a look at the Certified Broadcast Technologist or the Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist.

There are two ways that you can obtain the Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT) certification; by holding a valid FCC General Radio Telephone or Amateur Extra license and meeting the service requirement or by passing the CBT exam. Click here for more information on service requirements and for the CBT application.

The Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist (CBNT) is another certification that you may consider at anytime in your career. The CBNT was designed for persons who wish to demonstrate  basic familiarity with networking hardware as utilized in business and audio/video applications in broadcast facilities. Click here for more information on the CBNT and for applications.

For the above certifications there is no experience required.

This course reviews the entire IP and file based architecture, the changes in workflows and the broad spectrum of technologies that make up the environment. The transition to an IP infrastructure supporting file based broadcast and production came about more quickly and completely than any of the other recent changes in the broadcast and production industry. The course will show how this is a transition that is dependent on people, process and technology.

This new media lifecycle has brought a new vocabulary and lexicon into broadcast. There is tighter integration between departments and systems. This course reviews how metadata (data about data) is used to describe, control and manage the media (asset, essence, content). There are new rules and policies that govern the use and access of metadata; and the integration between departments.

Those who will benefit from this course include chief engineers, station managers, broadcast and production engineers, media IT engineers, IT technicians and managers, as well as anyone working or looking to work in media production & distribution and content creation.

Webinar by SBE on BXF: Improving Broadcast Operation Workflow

with Chris Lennon

SBE members - $49 ; non-members - $75

Do you feel the pain caused by decades-old interfaces that are tough to maintain, and not well-suited to today's demands for more open, dynamic interaction between systems? Are you being asked to do more, but with fewer resources? Chris Lennon, who is known as the father of SMPTE's Broadcast eXchange Format, also known as BXF, will be presenting a Webinar by SBE exploring BXF.

Attendees will get up to speed on what exactly BXF is, and why it has so rapidly become one of SMPTE's biggest success stories. The technical capabilities of BXF will be explored, as well as the underlying business benefits it provides.

BXF was first published about four years ago. Since then, the broadcast industry has embraced it. Hundreds of implementations have been successfully completed, and BXF is well on its way to being the de facto method of connecting systems such as Traffic, Automation, and Asset Management. See how BXF has helped broadcasters, and how it can help you, as well.

Chris Lennon serves as lead of Harris' CTO Group. He is a veteran of over 25 years in the broadcasting business. He also serves as Engineering Director for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Lennon is known as the father of the widely-used Broadcast eXchange Format (BXF) standard. He also represents Harris on a wide array of standards organizations, including SMPTE, SCTE, ATSC, and others. In his spare time, Lennon is a Porsche racer, and heads up a high performance driving program. Click here for more information and to register.

SBE Technical Presenters Group - technical experts available for your program

The Society of Broadcast Engineers invites select industry professionals to be a part of the Society's Technical Presenters Group. For a reasonable fee and travel expenses, groups such as state broadcasters associations, broadcasting companies, SBE chapters and others have the opportunity to include one of these presenters in their engineering conference, or as a trainer for their engineering staff. Speakers from the SBE Technical Presenters Group are generally available to speak across the country.

"Chapter 53 arranged to have Wayne Pecena, CPBE, present a day-long session on IP Networking earlier this year.  The SBE made it easy to bring an experienced, knowledgeable presenter to our area, and our members felt it was worth the time and money."  - Jim Leifer, CPBE, member of SBE Chapter 53

Presentations can last from as little as one hour to a full-day. For more information on this program, or to arrange a presentation for your group, contact Kimberly Kissel, SBE Education Director.
