fact60th Anniversary Fun Fact
On July 11, 1904, lightning struck the steeple of St. Peter Lutheran Church causing a fire that had to be extinguished by bucket brigade. The steeple was destroyed and had to be rebuilt, the organ required replacement and the bell was cracked during the event. The steeple work pictured here was part of a large restoration effort made by the church in 1972 that helped commemorate the church's 125 year anniversary.
holidayPolice Officials Celebrate Traditional Hindu Holiday
Schaumburg Police Chief Jim Lamkin and Sgt. Christy Lindhurst were honored to celebrate a traditional Hindu holiday known as Rakṣā Bandhana with members of the volunteer charitable organization, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HHS). The holiday, which fell on August 18, served as a way for the group to meet with civic leaders and public safety officers.

Hindus have traditionally observed Rakṣā Bandhana - loosely translated as the "Protection Connection" - as a holiday reaffirming the relationship between sisters and brothers.  The sister ties a string known as a Rākhī around her brother's wrist as a symbol of her love.  Not only does the brother promise to protect his sister, but the sister's Rākhī also protects the brother from life's adversities.

Following the ceremony, which was held August 23 at the Police Department, traditional food was served and police officials enjoyed sharing information about the department while learning more about HHS, which has been a chapter in Schaumburg for the past 17 years.
