Eagle Scout Project to Help Rainforest

The Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, located at 101 Schaumburg Ct., is serving as a collection site for old cellphones that will be used to prevent illegal logging in the Amazon Rainforest. Donations are being sought as part of Joey Young's Eagle Scout project. The old phones will be reprogrammed to act as covert listening devices on alert for the sound of chainsaws in the rainforest. The collection box will be available beginning Monday, July 11 at the main entrance of the municipal center. Cell phones will be collected until July 29; learn more about the Rainforest Connection. Phones may also be sent directly to Joey by sending him an email.

Free Radon Kits to be Available at July 15 Schaumburg Farmers Market

Representatives from Cook County Department of Environmental Control will be at the Schaumburg Farmers Market on Friday, July 15 offering free radon kits to Cook County residents. The kits are limited to one per resident, and residents will be required to give their name and address so that levels of radon can be tracked throughout the county.

The market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is located in the parking lot of Trickster Art Gallery, 190 S. Roselle Road.

Radon is a radioactive soil gas that can seep into a house through cracks in the basement floor and walls, around the openings of the sump pump, through well water or through crawl spaces. It occurs naturally from the decay of uranium in the soil and can accumulate to dangerous levels inside the home. Elevated levels of the colorless, odorless gas are the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Additional information on radon can be found on the county's website.

Spraying for Mosquitoes?

The Village of Schaumburg is included in the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District (NWMAD) that provides mosquito control to 242 square miles of northwest Cook County. Night spraying, when scheduled, begins at sunset and concludes around midnight. To view the criteria and schedule of spraying, visit the NWMAD website.

Residents are strongly advised to inspect their property for standing water that may produce an increase in mosquitoes. Report any stagnant water areas to NWMAD by calling (847) 537-2306 and use the voicemail reporting system by dialing "3" on your phone.

For resources on West Nile Virus, including symptoms, safety tips and more, visit the Cook County Department of Public Health website. To date this season, no West Nile virus in mosquitoes have been found within the NWMAD territory.

sixty60th Anniversary Fun Fact
The street now known as Wise Road was originally named for the Wiese family who lived along the road. During an improvement of the road, the original sign was taken down and upon completion of the work, the new sign was installed with the incorrect spelling. It continues to go by the name Wise.
rotationO'Hare Implements Overnight Runway Rotation Trial
This past week, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a 6-month trial of an overnight runway rotation at O'Hare International Airport. This trial was requested by the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) to address concerns about overnight noise and is designed to provide a more balanced distribution of nighttime flight noise throughout the region.

With an average of 80 flights each night, the 12-week rotation plan includes a primary and secondary runway configuration and will be used during the lowest demand hours at O'Hare. While core hours of the plan are anticipated between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., there are no fixed hours which gives air traffic control the flexibility to use the plan as long as demand allows.

As developed, the rotation plan seeks to balance east and west flow runway use to the greatest extent possible and also to avoid impacting the same communities two weeks in a row to provide relief for residents.

The runway rotation trial will last for 6 months and the trial will be used to gauge the effectiveness of a runway rotation plan during normal airfield operations, during runway closures due to construction and maintenance, and during the varying weather and wind conditions that occur at O'Hare. The 6-month trial period will give the FAA, CDA, ONCC and individual communities an opportunity to evaluate the rotation program and to determine whether the goals of a rotation are being met in advance of any permanent changes to the Fly Quiet program.

Following the 6-month runway rotation trial, survey feedback and other evaluation criteria data will be used to determine if the rotation plan should be implemented permanently. The ONCC is collecting community feedback through an online survey. Residents are encouraged to provide their feedback throughout the trial so that it can be used as part of the program evaluation. More information on the runway rotation program is available on the website.
heatStay Safe in Extreme Heat
On average, heat kills more people each year than other weather-related hazards, such as tornadoes, floods and lightning. To increase awareness about the dangers of extreme heat and high humidity, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies are offering heat safety tips throughout July to help people stay safe when temperatures rise.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking at least 1.5 to 2 quarts of fluids daily, even if you don't feel thirsty. water cup
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages and drinks containing caffeine.
  • Avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities if possible.
  • Take advantage of cooling centers, public pools and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat.
  • Do not leave pets outdoors for extended periods of time or in cars. Make sure they have extra water and a place to escape direct sun exposure.

Additional tips on how to protect yourself and others from heat-related illnesses are available on the Ready Illinois website.
