Schaumburg Police Share Scam Prevention Advice with Seniors

Schaumburg Police Detective Arthur Kwiatkowski held the attention of a packed audience of senior citizens as he discussed ways to keep the community safe from scams and fraud at the village's annual Senior Scam Presentation held May 10 at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

Through his presentation, which included news accounts, videos, pictures and actual evidence taken from crimes, Kwiatkowski shared some of the technology thieves are using to access financial information and various other deceptions that are being used to scam unsuspecting seniors.

Examples of some of the most widely-used scams include letters and emails requesting money, investment fraud, sweepstakes winner announcements and IRS/impersonation crimes.
A list of example scams and other safety tips is provided on the village's website.

TonysAlbertsons Extended Lease Delays Tony's Opening at Former Dominick's at Town Square
Since the Dominick's grocery store closed in December 2013, the Village of Schaumburg has been actively working to promote redevelopment of the site at Town Square. Although Tony's Finer Foods previously announced plans to open a store in late 2016, at the present time, there are no firm plans or timeline for a new store opening due to a lease extension maintained by Albertsons, the parent company of Jewel-Osco and Dominick's.

Tony's Finer Foods bought the property in 2015 with the intention of opening a store when the Dominick's lease expired at the end of May 2016. But, just before Tony's completed the purchase, company representatives learned that Albertsons exercised an extension of the long-term lease on the site.

Although Tony's completed the purchase, the property remains subject to the terms of Albertsons' lease and is currently controlled by Albertsons/Jewel-Osco. The village understands the lease extension will run through May 2021.

While Albertsons has recently informed the village they would like to work with Tony's to cancel the lease, their actions have already delayed Tony's from opening for one year, maybe more. It remains unclear how the lost year of progress will ultimately impact Tony's ability to move forward in Schaumburg.

The village is committed to working with Albertsons/Jewel-Osco and Tony's to reach a final resolution as quickly as possible. The empty storefront has a big impact on our community and nearby businesses. The planned opening of a Tony's Finer Foods would have brought 200 permanent jobs to the community and $5 million invested in redevelopment.

If you have additional questions about the property, please contact Assistant Director of Community Development Matt Frank at (847) 923-4430.
princeEngineering & Public Works Visit with Prince of Peace
Employees of Engineering and Public Works recently brought equipment to the Prince of Peace preschool/kindergarten facility at 900 W. Higgins Road so that students could learn about equipment used to maintain the roads and repair underground utilities in the community.

Children excitedly watched as EPW employees demonstrated the operation of a sewer vacuum truck, tree trimming bucket truck and a hole digging excavator. In addition, preschoolers were given the opportunity to sit behind the steering wheel for photo opportunities.

Residents young and old can see the same equipment and view informational booths and demos at the upcoming Engineering and Public Works Open House that will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21. This free event will be held at 714 S. Plum Grove Road and is open to the public. For more information, visit the village's website.

Checker's changed ownership at the end of 2015 and is offering all of the same menu selections. In addition to a variety of pancake options, Checker's also serves distinctive omelets, skillets, crepes, blintzes, as well as a number of lunch choices including burgers, croissants, chicken entrees, and chef-inspired salads.

The eastbound entrance ramp to I-90 at Barrington Road remains closed with a posted detour routing traffic to Roselle Road. Please plan additional time if traveling along Roselle Road.
