Schaumburg Highlights Play Ball Summer Initiative

Village President Al Larson donned his favorite Chicago Cubs ballcap on April 4 (opening day) along with hundreds of other Mayors across the country to show his support of Play Ball Summer, an initiative of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, MLB and USA Baseball that focuses on the fun nature of baseball and encourages widespread participation in baseball-related activities. The Mayor is a Cubs fan and also supports the village's home team, the Schaumburg Boomers, every season. He's hoping for two championships: one for the Boomers and one for the Cubs this year!

Volunteer in the Community with the Schaumburg Medical Reserve Corps

Next week (April 10-16) is National Volunteer Week. As several Illinois communities continue to recover from tornadoes, flooding and severe storms that occurred last year, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies are highlighting the critical roles volunteers play in disaster preparedness, response and recovery efforts as part of a month-long focus on volunteers in disasters.

Here in Schaumburg, those interested in helping their community can volunteer in the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). The mission of the MRC is to facilitate the engagement of medical, public health and civic volunteers who will assist in building a strong, healthy, prepared community. Learn more about how you can get involved in Schaumburg's MRC.

sixty60th Anniversary Fun Fact
Early Schaumburg businessman Henry Quindel not only built what is now Lou Malnati's, but also a second inn currently known as Easy Street. The building was sold in the mid-1920s to Frank Lengl who operated a highly successful tavern and restaurant. Venison dinners were a popular menu item at Frank Lengl's establishment, who in addition to pheasants and ducks, kept live deer in a pen behind the building.
budgetSchaumburg Proposes Fair & Balanced Financial Plan
Members of Schaumburg's village staff will present the Fiscal Year 2016/17 proposed budget to the Village Board at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday, April 19.

The proposed budget demonstrates a fair and balanced financial plan that does not include any new taxes. The budget will be presented to the Village Board by Village Manager Brian Townsend, Assistant Village Manager Paula Hewson and Director of Finance Lisa Happ.

The FY 2016/17 budget has projected total revenues and other financing sources at $267 million, which is an increase of 22 percent over last year's amended budget. This increase is primarily due to a one-time infusion due to the sale of $50 million in bonds to finance road and other infrastructure improvements. The General Fund, which is the village's main operating fund, has projected revenues (without transfers) of $101 million and projected expenditures (without transfers) of $89 million. The General Fund reflects a $1.9 million surplus after transfers.

A survey of 16 surrounding communities conducted by the village ranks Schaumburg fifth in spending per capita and 13th in collection of direct revenue per capita. This indicates the village strives to keep its fees and taxes low and provide exceptional public services, well-maintained infrastructure, and world-class amenities. Read more.
