Golden Corridor Unveils New Website

The Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership has a vibrant new website to better educate youth about exciting careers in advanced manufacturing. The web address is: www.gcamp.org.

The website offers important information for high school students and parents about a significant component of the American economy.  Manufacturing supports about 17.6 million jobs in the U.S. (one on six private sector jobs). The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte estimate that there will be a shortage of 3 million skilled manufacturing workers over the next 10 years.

GCAMP works with school districts 211 and 214 helping students to secure engineering and manufacturing internships primarily in the summer months. Visit the GCAMP website next spring for opportunities. For more information, contact GCAMP by email or phone at (847) 815-6729.

Working Smoke Alarms Are Vital

The Schaumburg Fire Department reminds the public to check smoke alarms to make sure they are operating correctly. Smoke alarms should be tested each month, batteries changed every 6 months and replaced after about 10 years.

It is reported that there is less time to escape a house fire today than 30 years ago. Newer, synthetic furnishings burn much faster than older, more natural fabrics. Watch this video demonstrating the differences in the speed of fires which further highlights the need for working smoke alarms. For more information, contact the fire department at (847) 885-6300.

sixty60th Anniversary
Fun Fact
Popular country western singer Robert O. Atcher was elected as Schaumburg's Village President in 1959 and served in this capacity for the next 16 years. His wife, Maggie Atcher, was a popular figure in the community in her own right. It was at her urging that funds were secured for the construction of the Prairie Center for the Arts.

taxImportant Property Tax Information for Senior Citizens
Township of Schaumburg residents 65 years of age or older should have received renewal forms for senior citizen property tax exemptions this week and will have until Wednesday, Feb. 3 to file them. The forms are also available on the Cook County Assessor's website.

Senior tax exemptions include:
  • Senior Exemption: available to all seniors regardless of income
  • Senior Freeze: provides some seniors with additional savings if the combined income of all members in the household is less than $55,000 and if the senior has been an owner-occupant of the property since Jan. 1, 2014.
Local seniors are encouraged to call the Township of Schaumburg Assessors Office at (847) 884-0030 for help completing the forms.

In addition, senior citizens struggling with property taxes can defer payment of their property taxes until their homes or condominiums are sold. The Senior Citizen Tax Deferral Program allows seniors to defer as much as $5,000 of their property tax bill every year. To qualify for the deferral program, seniors must have annual household income of less than $55,000, have equity in their homes that exceeds the sum of property taxes deferred, and have lived in their homes for three years.  Small multi-family properties such as two-flats that generate rental income are not eligible for the program. Applications much be submitted by Tuesday, March 1. More information can be found on the assessor's website.

I-90 Tollway Updates
All of the projects slowed a bit this week due to the colder temperatures, but all of the contractors plan to continue working as weather permits throughout the winter months.
The Meacham Road bridge contractor has crews on site. Their work is focused on installing reinforcing bars and wooden forms to encase the concrete that will support the new bridge pavement.

The Roselle Road contractor is still working north of Roselle Road. Storm sewer crews will start building the pipes that will carry stormwater from the I-90 bridge back through Central Road to the culvert.

The mainline contractors continue to press ahead with all available work. Again, use caution through those I-90 work zones. Traffic will move to new pavement during the next month, so please use extra caution and watch for new signs and new lanes. Be sure to visit the village's website for further information and other updates on this project.
