Schaumburg Library Literacy Coordinator Retiring

After 31 years of service to the Schaumburg Township District Library (STDL), Literacy Coordinator Pat Barch is retiring. Barch has helped countless people become U.S. citizens and played a key role in establishing the library as a host for U.S. Naturalization Oath ceremonies. In September, she was awarded an appreciation plaque from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and The U.S. Department of Homeland Security - one of many awards received throughout her STDL employment. In 2012, she was selected as one of nine "Outstanding Women in Education" during the Women's History Month Celebration sponsored by the Honorable Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County; The Clerk's Office Women's Advisory Committee and the Chase Women of Color Employee Network Group. Barch has spent the majority of her library career overseeing the English as a Second Language and Read to Learn programs. Her last day of working at STDL will be Friday, Jan. 8.

Sixty60th Anniversary Fun Fact
In honor of Schaumburg's 60th Anniversary this year, the village will be sharing weekly historical fun facts in this e-newsletter. Below is the first of what will become a regular installment for the year.

Many think that Robert Atcher was the Village of Schaumburg's first village president. Not so. Elected on February 10, 1956, Louis Redeker was the community's first village president and served with trustees Phillip Mueller, Frank Wiley, William E. Frank, Herman Winkelhake, Jr., Ellsworth Meineke and Walter Slingerland, Sr. The first village clerk was Sara Meginnis.
cprEMT Student Rides With Crew That Saved His Life as a Child
When Schaumburg Fire Department Lt. Gus Tsoulos told his neighbor, EMT student Bill Shanahan, that he could fulfill his ambulance ride-along requirement with Schaumburg, Shanahan knew exactly with whom he'd like to ride.

July 9th, 1997: Then just shy of three years old, Shanahan was playing outside with his older sister and found a way through the gate surrounding his family's swimming pool to retrieve a toy that was floating in the pool. When his mother returned outside from a quick stop in the house with Shanahan's crying infant sister, she found him unconscious in the pool. She pulled him out and began CPR while a neighbor called 911.

Schaumburg Firefighter/Paramedic John Niemann arrived on the scene to find Shanahan on the deck of the pool without a heartbeat and not breathing. He took over CPR and carried the young boy to the ambulance where Lt. John Chambers and retired Schaumburg firefighter Ray Powell were waiting to assist. They were able to regain a heartbeat while transporting Shanahan to the hospital.

Now 21 years old, Shanahan's ultimate career goal is to become a Schaumburg Firefighter/Paramedic once he completes his Associates Degree at Harper College. Shanahan was reunited with firefighter Niemann recently for his first ambulance ride-along on his path to achieving that goal.

John Niemann says, "I remember it like it was yesterday. I cannot believe it's been 18 years." Niemann stressed that if Shanahan's mother and neighbor had not begun CPR immediately, the outcome likely would have been very different. Understandably, Shanahan's mother calls that day his second birthday. Shanahan credits the firefighter/paramedics for his life and his ability to pursue his dream: his dream of following in their footsteps.

carbonMake Sure to Have Working Carbon Monoxide Alarms
The Schaumburg Fire Department reminds you that you should have working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms installed on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area.  The CO alarms, like smoke alarms, should be tested monthly.  Carbon monoxide poisoning is very dangerous. It is an odorless and colorless gas that displaces the oxygen in the blood and can make a person feel sick or even cause death. For additional information and safety tips, visit the National Fire Protection Association's website.
