fireSchaumburg Fire Department Shops For Local Families in Need
Schaumburg Firefighters Benevolent Association recently sponsored its 25th annual Christmas Shopping for Families In Need at the Target store at Schaumburg and Barrington Roads. The firefighters adopted 12 families through Schaumburg Township and spent $5,000 purchasing presents, including clothing, toys, games, books, bedding and gift cards to Target, gas stations and grocery stores. Target generously opened their doors an hour early, provided breakfast for the firefighters and a discount on their purchase. The gifts were wrapped by the firefighters and their families along with fifth graders from Hoover Elementary School in Schaumburg.

In addition, the Firefighters Benevolent Association also donated a $5,000 check to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry to restock their shelves after the Thanksgiving holiday. All the money used for these charities was raised through the annual Firefighter Charity Softball Tournament that was held in September where $37,000 was raised.

govbillLocal Government Funding Bill Signed by Illinois Governor
A bill intended to release state funding owed to local governments was approved by the Illinois House and Senate and signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner this week. The bill authorizes the payment of almost $2 billion in non-general fund revenues to be distributed to local cities and towns, including the Village of Schaumburg. This includes state-collected revenues such as the local share of the Use Tax, Motor Fuel Tax (MFT), gaming, Wireless 9-1-1 Surcharge and federal transportation funding to be distributed to local governments. Cities and villages rely on these revenues to provide essential services to the public, including, but not limited to, 9-1-1 emergency response, road maintenance and construction, snow removal, and road salt purchases. Issued payments to villages could begin as early as this month.

The state continues to operate without a Fiscal Year 2016 state budget and has been doing so since July 1, 2015.
trashCampanelli Students Talk Trash
A group of sixth grade students from Campanelli School are working on a project for an international competition sponsored by the First Lego League. The topic this year is Trash Trek, which focuses on how to either reduce the amount of trash generated or better process it.  The students recently presented their research and findings about food scrap composting to Schaumburg's Village Manager, Director of Engineering and Public Works and the Landscape and Sustainability Planner. Through this discussion the village learned more about the benefits of composting, and staff will consider where it might be able to feasibly incorporate this and other sustainable initiatives throughout the village in the future.

Below is a brief excerpt from their article:

We are sixth grade Magnet students from Campanelli Elementary School, and are participating in an international competition called First Lego League; hence, our team name is Magnet Fury. Lego League consists of three parts: a robot game, core values, and a project, which abides to a theme. The theme this year is Trash Trek, and the focus of this theme is to reduce the amount of trash being thrown away or better handle the trash we make. There are many different groups of trash, like paper, plastic, etc. Paper is the most disposed item, and you might think that the second most thrown away item is plastic. Surprisingly, the second most wasted item is actually food waste.

Magnet Fury wants to promote the motto: Recycle, Eliminate, and Compost.
