Change the Clocks, Change the Batteries in Smoke Alarms

Daylight Saving Time will end this weekend at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1. Remember to change the clocks back one hour.

In addition, the Schaumburg Fire Department reminds community members that now is a good time to also change the batteries in all smoke alarms. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be tested every six months. Smoke alarms have an operating life of 10 years so it may be time to replace your smoke alarm.

Proper Leaf Disposal

The Village of Schaumburg would like to remind residents not to rake leaves or put grass clippings in the street. Debris left in the street may cause storm water to back up if the leaves block and clog sewers and inlets. For this reason, leaves cannot be blown or disposed of into village streets or raked into the parkways. This is a violation of the Village Code of Ordinances. A warning notice will be issued to residents who do not properly prepare their landscape waste for pick-up. For more information on proper yard waste disposal, visit the village's website or contact the Engineering and Public Works Department by calling (847) 895-7100.

hallowsHappy Halloween! Remain Safe.
Halloween is celebrated Saturday, Oct. 31. The Village of Schaumburg has no ordinance determining Halloween hours for children; however, the Schaumburg Police Department asks residents to limit trick-or-treating between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 during daylight hours. Households welcoming children should leave on porch lights or other exterior lighting. Never ask children to step inside to receive treats and call 911 immediately if it is suspected a child is lost or in need of help. The police department recommends only distributing wrapped candy to children. For additional Halloween safety tips from our police and fire departments, visit the village's webpage.
cupTrickster Gallery & Mayor Welcome the Stanley Cup to Schaumburg

Proceeds from the event went to the gallery, which is the only Native American owned and operated institution in Illinois.
recycleFall Recycling Event Recap
Despite some rain and chilly temperatures, the village's fall paper shred and latex paint recycling event held on Oct. 24 was a success. A total of 234 cars came through the 3-hour event and brought 5,180 pounds of paper to be recycled and 1,509 gallons of latex paint for safe disposal. Thank you to everyone who came out and be sure to mark your calendar for the village's next recycling event that will be held April 23, 2016.

Additional Recycling Opportunity November 7!
Schaumburg Township is sponsoring a Community Shred & Electronics Recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7 in the parking lot of the Schaumburg Township building located at 1 Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates. The event is free and open to Schaumburg Township residents only; proof of residency is required. For details on what items are accepted for recycling, visit the township's website or call (847) 884-0030, ext. 3016.
medicalMedical Marijuana Moves Forward
Medical marijuana dispensary PharmaCannis, LLC, is expected to open in November as a state licensed medical marijuana dispensary. This dispensary holds the only state license available for the area covered by Elk Grove and Schaumburg townships.  Located at 1135 Tower Rd., the dispensary is approximately 1,400 square feet and is located in a building in an industrial and manufacturing area of the village. Recently, village officials, business leaders, and health care providers were invited to an open house to tour the facility and learn more about its operations.

As a dispensary, PharmaCannis will be regulated by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to acquire medical cannabis that will be administered to qualifying patients under the state's new Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Act that was signed into law in 2013. For patient resources, visit the state website.

Local governments cannot enact an outright ban on dispensaries if they can satisfy the requirements of the state law, which PharmaCannis demonstrated in its application. PharmaCannis will be required to pay an annual impact fee to the village to cover costs associated with the medical marijuana dispensary being located in the village. The fee is intended to cover public safety costs that might be incurred from having a controlled substance in the area.
tipsSchaumburg Police Raise $1,600 for Special Olympics at Tip a Cop

Martingale Road Patching
Concrete pavement patching is almost complete on Martingale Road at various locations from Higgins Road to the south end of the village's limits. Improvements include lane closures, and flaggers will be present. The project is expected to be complete by early November.

I-390 Tollway Updates
The Illinois Tollway will open new lanes in each direction on I-390 between Irving Park Road and Meacham Road/Medinah Road on Friday, Oct. 30. The new lanes and rehabilitated section of existing roadway are the first improvements as part of construction of the new I-390 Tollway. For additional project updates, visit the website.

I-90 Tollway Updates
The eastbound entrance ramp to I-90 at Barrington Road will reopen in the early evening on Saturday, Oct. 31, which should help reduce the volume of traffic on Roselle Road. Use extra caution if traveling through that area; changes in traffic patterns are often confusing for the first few days.

The bridge contractors continue to build the abutments and other concrete structures that will support the future bridges. Both have concrete delivery scheduled for the first two weeks in November so expect to see mix trucks moving in and out of the work zones at both Roselle Road and Meacham Road.

The Meacham contractor has focused efforts on completing the new pavement on the eastern side of the project. New concrete is expected to be poured on November 12 and 13, which will result in some lane closures when that occurs. Be sure to visit the village's website for further information and other updates on this project.
