dayManufacturing Day Inspires Next Generations
Local Schaumburg manufacturers and businesses such as the American Foundry Society, Innovative Components, Inc., Sandvik Coromant Company and Technology & Manufacturing Association hosted events as part of Manufacturing Day on Oct. 2. This national movement celebrates modern manufacturing by sharing some of the tools, technology and practices used in the industry to inspire future generations.

Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity Director Jim Schultz was on hand to present Innovative Components with a proclamation from Gov. Bruce Rauner highlighting the benefits Innovative Components and other manufacturers offer in Illinois. Innovative Components provided tours to more than 300 high school students. They also have an intern from the Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (GCAMP) through Harper College and plan on hiring 4-6 apprentices in the next few months.

Sandvik and the American Foundry Society hosted Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti at their programs offered that day. Both of these businesses hosted more than 500 students from the Chicagoland area to learn more about manufacturing careers. The American Foundry Society provided scratch molds and the ability to make castings to take home. The Technology & Manufacturing Association (TMA) had some of its members provide information to students and prospective manufacturers at their Schaumburg office as well.

2. Non-CDL drivers who will rotate between driving a pickup truck with a plow and performing manual labor of snow shoveling.

communityCommunity Assistance Fund Recognition Event
The village held a recognition event Oct. 7 to thank local businesses and individuals who have donated time, resources and financial contributions to victims in need through the Community Assistance Fund.

Managed annually and maintained on a case-by-case basis by village social workers through the Community Services Department, in conjunction with Schaumburg Police Department, the Community Assistance Fund assists area victims of domestic violence and other crimes, as well as other families in crisis situations that are referred from the police department. The fund was initially started with help from Motorola Solutions, but has spread to include other organizations and individuals including family law attorneys, Meg Jackson and Margaret Zuleger, oral surgeon Dr. Alexandria Bialy, Harper College Women's Program, and local hotels, all of which were recognized at the event.

Working together with the village's Police Social Services Unit, the organizations and their in-kind contributions help provide critical services such as transportation, housing, help with legal assistance, first-month's rent and more for Schaumburg families in crisis.

"Many of our partner departments don't have this kind of service to provide to those in need," said Schaumburg Social Worker Pat Dahmen who helped organize the recognition event. "This fund gives us a support network so that we don't feel so helpless. We're able to utilize these funds to keep people safe and I can't speak enough about the difference this has made not only to the police department but to the people we serve."

The village is seeking to partner with additional businesses and organizations to ensure the growth of the Community Assistance Fund where 100 percent of contributions will directly benefit local families when a crime or other crisis occurs. For more information, call the village at (847) 923-7393. To make a contribution to the Community Assistance Fund, please make checks payable to Community Assistance Fund and mail to: Police Social Services Unit, 1000 W. Schaumburg Rd., Schaumburg, IL 60194. A letter of acknowledgement and an annual report that details cases receiving funds in the 2015-2016 year will be shared with you.
