Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall in the U.S. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency estimates as many as 1,160 Illinois citizens develop radon-related lung cancer each year and the Surgeon General estimates that radon may cause as many as 21,000 deaths in the U.S. annually. The Cook County Department of Environmental Control offers free information as well as radon test kits (residential use only) for $7 each. Further information is available at (708) 865-6177 or go to IEMA's radon page

jayceesPolice Thank Jaycees for Donation with K-9 Demo at Dooley School
The Schaumburg Jaycees graciously purchased a new, full-body Demanet bite suit for the Schaumburg Police Department, a tool valued at $1,500. The suit replaced an old training bite suit that was more than 20 years old. The suits are used in training exercises with our police department's K-9 units.

To thank the Schaumburg Jaycees, the Schaumburg Police Department held a K-9 Demo Sept. 30 at Dooley School in front of the entire school of approximately 450 children. After presenting the Schaumburg Jaycees with a certificate of appreciation, officers explained the primary uses for the K-9 unit in keeping the community safe. The demo ended with K-9 Officer Majic  and Officer Nate Miller showcasing the bite suit in action. The police department thanks the Jaycees for its contribution in providing officers with such a valuable training tool.
parkingCommuter Parking Made Convenient with Mobile App
October 1st marked the start of the village's new PassportParking mobile application that allows commuters utilizing daily fee parking to skip the trip to the meter and pay directly from their smartphones or mobile devices.

To utilize the new service, customers must first download the PassportParking app from the Apple Store for iPhones and iPads or Google Play for Android users and other tablets. Once downloaded, users will register an account. Participants can also register for the service online at m.ppprk.com or by calling (847) 380-4332.

Once registered for the service, users will need to enter their vehicle's Zone Number, which is always 60193, followed by the space number that indicates which stall they are parked in, and confirm the time needed for their session. Please note that payment for a stall does not reserve the space in advance. Users should park first and then pay for the time needed for that particular stall. Payment is required once a person has parked his or her vehicle in a daily fee parking space. Learn more about the new app and its features.
safedrivingPublic Works Employees Awarded for Safe Driving Commitment
At a recognition breakfast held this week, 24 employees of the village's Engineering & Public Works Department were recognized for safe driving efforts over the last eight months. The department utilizes Drive Cam technology that records driving habits of employees in all EPW vehicles through captured "events." These events are captured and downloaded wirelessly each evening to DriveCam, which has a team to provide analysis of the events to identify any risky driving behavior such as following too closely, rolling through a stop sign or failing to ensure passengers are wearing a seatbelt as an example. Coaches in each division meet with drivers to discuss all coachable events and work with drivers to eliminate reoccurrences, maintaining safe driving in the village at all times. This was the village's first recognition event and required drivers to complete an eight month period from January through August with no coachable events. Congratulations to the 24 employees who were awarded.
ticketParking Ticket Amnesty Program Runs Through October 31
During the month of October, the Schaumburg Police Department will be offering an opportunity for those with delinquent parking and municipal ticket fines to settle their accounts at a reduced payment. For outstanding parking and municipal violations that have reached final determination, with the exception of handicap parking violations, the final determination late fee will be waived during the amnesty period. In most cases, this will result in a 50 percent reduction in the payment amount due.

After this opportunity expires, vehicle owners will be responsible to pay all fines and fees in full. For those with at least three outstanding and delinquent parking violations, the cited vehicle will remain eligible for immobilization with a Denver Boot. Those receiving ten unpaid parking violation notices will have their driver's license suspended through the Illinois Secretary of State's Office. Unpaid municipal tickets will remain in the collection process.

For more information about this opportunity, or to see if you have outstanding parking or municipal citations, visit the village's website.

ConstructionConstruction Updates
For a link to all village projects, please visit the website.

Salem Drive Improvement Project:
The contractor is completing some remaining concrete work and prepping the parkways for the installation of topsoil. Please be aware that minor traffic changes may occur due to contractor work so please be cautious and careful when traveling through the work site. For project updates, visit the webpage. This project is expected to be complete by November.

Martingale Road Improvement Project:
The contractor has completed all of the concrete sidewalk and curb work and milling operations on the road will be complete Friday. On Monday, the contractor will perform asphalt patching and will begin the repairs on the bikepath on the east side of the road. By the end of next week, weather permitting, the contractor will have completed the entire asphalt placement on the road and the bikepath. The project is anticipated to be complete by early November 2015. For project updates, visit the webpage.

I-390 Tollway Updates
A right lane in both directions on I-390 between Irving Park and Rodenburg roads will close at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 for bridge joint replacement. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. Also, the eastbound I-390 ramp to Springinsguth Road detour that is in place will be extended through Oct. 18. for work that is continuing in the area.

I-90 Tollway Updates
Expect night work at both the Meacham Road and Roselle Road bridge projects over the next few weeks. The Roselle Road contractor is completing the demolition work by removing the beams that supported the old bridge pavement. Work will take place at night since the lanes of I-90 under the bridge are shut down for the cranes to lift off the beams. The Meacham Road contractor is working on the caissons, the vertical shafts drilled into the ground, that will support the new bridge. This process takes time to excavate and prepare for concrete so the team is working around the clock to maximize the productivity of the very special equipment they need to use. Be sure to visit the village's website for further information and other updates on this project.
