manufactureNational Manufacturing Day
To help celebrate National Manufacturing Day on Friday, Oct. 2, the Village of Schaumburg will be issuing a proclamation at the Sept. 22 Village Board meeting in a show of support for the village's 80,000 manufacturers who work at
more than 200 manufacturing companies in Schaumburg. The proclamation also highlights the village's role in the Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (GCAMP) to help address manufacturer's workforce needs. Schaumburg has participated in a variety of manufacturer's summits to address workforce development and training, access to capital, transportation, healthcare and other issues.

Manufacturing Day is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Local Schaumburg manufacturers and businesses such as the American Foundry Society, Innovative Components, Inc., Sandvik Coromant Company and Technology & Manufacturing Association are hosting events to celebrate Manufacturing Day on October 2 with programs and demonstrations in the manufacturing labs.

businessSeptember Business of the Month: Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center
The Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center is the September Business of the Month. The 16-floor, 500-room hotel & convention center opened in 2006. The facility is owned by the Village of Schaumburg but managed by Marriott International, which includes the operation and administration of nearly 150,000 square feet of total meeting and event space, including a 100,000 square foot exhibition hall for a wide variety of shows and events. Since 2006, the hotel and center has grown to become one of the village's top 25 employers with more than 350 total employees. Watch this video that highlights why the hotel is one of Schaumburg's gems in the community.

The Renaissance embraces a "Spirit to Serve our Community" initiative, which includes raising more than $15,000 annually for Children's Miracle Network, donating regularly to the Schaumburg Food Pantry, local animal shelters, and by partnering with District 211 special need students who job shadow at the property. The Renaissance also contributes to more than 50 local charities by donating auction items to help the community.

The hotel and convention center contributes a great deal of money to the village's economy every year. About $43 million is generated annually to the Schaumburg business community as a result of hundreds of thousands of visitors and guests who attend events at the Convention Center and stay in the hotel. In 2014, the Convention Center hosted 67 events with an estimated 160,000 attendees. These events alone produced nearly $7 million in tax revenue in the form of hotel, amusement, and food & beverage taxes.

TurretFamily of Turret House Builder Visits
Family of the man who constructed Turret House came back to Schaumburg recently to visit the house that was built around 1901. Sisters Louanne Severson and Jean Turley spoke of the historic house their grandfather, Louis Menke (pictured in the middle in the small inset), built where their father and his seven siblings were born. Although they did not know Louis Menke, family stories indicated he was a contractor who built things with his hands and was responsible for building the house located at 17 E. Schaumburg Rd. The village owns the house and runs its Family Counseling Center from this location.
prepareSeptember is National Preparedness Month: How Will You Communicate With Family?
Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan how you will contact one another. Think about how you will communicate in different situations. Complete a contact card for each adult family member. Have them keep these cards handy in a wallet, purse or briefcase, etc. Additionally, complete contact cards for each child in your family. Put the cards in their backpacks or book bags.

Check with your children's day care or school. Facilities designed for children should include identification planning as part of their emergency plans. For more family communication tips, visit the website for a variety of tools that can assist in helping you become prepared in the event of an emergency.

Improvements on Martingale Road between Higgins Road and Woodfield Road began last week. The project includes roadway patching and resurfacing, drainage structure adjustments, removal and replacement of sidewalk, bikepath, driveways, curb and gutter and parkway restoration. Daily lane closures on Martingale Road will be implemented to allow the contractor to complete the necessary repairs. In addition, other closures of the sidewalk, bikepath and driveways will also need to occur as the project progresses. Work will begin on the west side of Martingale Road before moving to the east side. The project is anticipated to be complete by early November 2015. For project updates, visit the webpage.

I-90 Tollway Updates
Demolition work continues at both the Meacham Road and Roselle Road bridges with work that will occur into the overnight hours to protect the traffic on I-90 under the bridges.

Please remember the pedestrian path across the Meacham Road bridge is still in service through the construction zone. Look for the "Bike Path" signs on either side of the work area and follow the fencelines across the new bridge. Although that path will change during construction, it will be maintained throughout the project for the public to utilize.

The eastbound entrance ramp closure at Barrington Road remains in place through at least October 20. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and leave a few minutes earlier. Some motorists may even want to try alternate routes. Be sure to visit the village's website for further information and other updates on this project.
