September Environmental Tip

Mulch trees and shrubs this fall to protect them during winter. Use grass clippings as natural mulch around your trees and in your garden, but avoid using clippings that might contain weed seeds. When mulching around trees, regardless of mulch material used, remember to pull the mulch back from the base of the tree to allow the root crown to have access to air and water. Do not pile mulch up against the bark of your trees.

tourismIllinois Tourism Director Visits Schaumburg, Tours Community
Cory Jobe, Director of the Illinois Office of Tourism, came to Schaumburg Sept. 9 for a community tour and visit to the Schaumburg Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. Village personnel escorted Jobe around town and showed him the village's five new hotels under construction, new corporate headquarters for Zurich and Sunstar that are under construction as well as the American Society of Anesthesiologists headquarters that opened recently. Jobe also checked out the variety of restaurants along Meacham Road before having lunch with Village President Al Larson where they discussed ways in which the village could work with tourism officials to bring new visitors to Schaumburg. customerStudents Get Lesson in Customer Service Requests
Recently Schaumburg High School seniors were introduced to the district's Students Helping Area Resources Experience, or SHARE, Program, an initiative offering opportunities for students to get involved in the local community to learn more about how the community provides for social needs and the importance of volunteers and informed citizens. Through the program, students are required to volunteer with a list of approved agencies and organizations that will count for class credit for Social Studies class.

As part of the introduction at the school last week, Schaumburg's Supervisor of the Customer Service Center, Tom Lake, shared with students how they can utilize the village's Customer Service Request, or CSR, tool as another way to contribute to their community.

"If you see a house that needs attention, a pothole, maybe it's a streetlight that is out, or tall grass that needs to be trimmed, these are all things you can point out to us and we're there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make sure they all get answered," Lake said. "It's about being a responsible citizen in the community. The village is a big place and we can't possibly know about everything that needs to be addressed or fixed."

Lake explained that CSRs can be submitted anonymously if a person wishes. Students can pinpoint problems easily by location by utilizing GPS services on a smartphone and by taking a picture of the problem to provide a visual description for village employees. CSRs can be submitted directly to the village a variety of ways:
  • By dialing 311 within Schaumburg or by calling (847) 895-4500 outside of Schaumburg.
  • By accessing the village's website.
  • By texting 847-306-9862. Standard text message rates may apply.

The CSR tool is available for any resident to utilize. Please note that CSRs should NOT be used to report an emergency. All emergencies should be reported by dialing 911.

prepareSeptember is National Preparedness Month: Make a Plan
September is National Preparedness Month. This year we are asking you to take action now - make a plan with your community, your family and for your pets. Plan how to stay safe and communicate during the disasters that can affect your community. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to think about the following situations and plan just in case. Consider the following questions when making a plan:
  • How will my family/household get emergency alerts and warnings?
  • How will my family/household get to safe locations for relevant emergencies?
  • How will my family/household get in touch if cell phone, internet, or landline doesn't work?
  • How will I let loved ones know I am safe?
  • How will family/household get to a meeting place after the emergency?
Visit the www.ready.gov website to download templates for planning and start your preparedness journey today.
