Village's 2015 Street Program Begins

The village's 2015 Street Program has now started. This year's program consists of 40 streets for resurfacing, various streets proposed for preventative maintenance (crack-filling, micro-surfacing, surface treatments, and pavement patching), and two streets for concrete improvements and pavement patching.  Additionally, the village will continue the past programs of sealcoating and bike path resurfacing. Completing these improvements will improve these vital assets for the homeowners, bicyclists, businesses, motorists, and pedestrians within our community. Visit the village's website to see which streets are slated for improvement this year.

Snow Plowing in May?

While snow plowing is not the first thing that comes to mind in May, WGN's reporter Marcus Leshock had a little fun and learned how difficult it can be to drive village snow plows at an American Public Works Association equipment rodeo held this month. Check out WGN's fun video of what it is like to drive a snow plow and some of the obstacles drivers face when keeping the streets safe in the winter.

neighborsVillage Introduces Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program

In the spirit of helping one another and fostering a strong community, the Village of Schaumburg is now offering Schaumburg residents and businesses the opportunity to help those who are going through challenging financial times and are at risk of having their water shut off.

The new Neighbors Helping Neighbors program enables anyone to make donations to a fund set aside to assist in situations that are determined to be legitimate emergencies.

"This program is a great way for someone to do something kind for someone else in the community who may be struggling financially to pay for village services such as water," said duRee Bryant, the village's Supervisor of Human Services. "Often times, we're made aware of residents in these emergency situations who could use a little help, and now we're giving people an outlet to provide some assistance if they are interested."

Those interested in helping may make a donation on the village's website and click on 'Neighbors Helping Neighbors' or you may write a separate check to the Village of Schaumburg with "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" written in the lower left corner and submit it with your water bill payment. Questions about the program may be directed to Supervisor of Human Services duRee Bryant at (847) 524-1505.

burnunitSchaumburg Firefighters Donate Funds to Loyola Burn Unit

This May, members of the Schaumburg Firefighters Benevolent Association presented a check for $20,000 to the Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit. The money was raised during the association's annual firefighter softball tournament that was held in September. Over the last 21 years, the tournament has raised more than $580,000.

In addition to the donation to Loyola, $5,000 was donated to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry and $5,000 was used to purchase Christmas gifts for 12 families this past holiday season.

Loyola's Burn Center uses the money to purchase specialized equipment to be used exclusively in the care of burn victims. Some of the past items purchased include blanket warmers, a bladder scanner, specialized pediatric therapy equipment and a vein scanner to help locate the veins on a burn patient to aid in starting IV's.

Salem Drive Improvement Project:

The removal of the pavement, sidewalks, driveways and curb and gutter have been completed on the west side of Salem Drive and the installation of the new storm sewer and watermain work has begun. As part of this work, two water meter valves will need to be installed at the intersection of Salem Drive and Daniels Court. This work is scheduled to start around 11 p.m. on Friday, May 29 and be completed by 5 a.m. Saturday, May 30. All residents and businesses affected by the water shutdown have been notified. Motorists are urged to use caution and slow down in the construction zone. For project updates, visit the webpage. This project is expected to be complete by November.

Martingale Road Patching:

Martingale Road improvements will continue on June 1 with a traffic pattern change that will be taking place for the completion of pavement patching in the intersection of Martingale and Schaumburg roads. Message boards and arrow boards have been placed on both southbound and northbound Martingale Road along with one on Schaumburg Road to help provide direction to motorists. Flaggers and workers will be present during this operation; please drive safely.

Bode Road Reconstruction (Hoffman Estates):

The Village of Hoffman Estates is reconstructing Bode Road from Parker Drive to Woodlawn Street. The project is being completed in various phases and is expected to be complete later this summer. For information, including updates and detours, visit Hoffman Estates' webpage.

I-390 Tollway Updates

An eastbound frontage closure will continue through Monday, June 8 in conjunction with improvements to the I-390 project.  Signed detour has been posted directing traffic to use Irving Park Road and Rodenburg Road to access the eastbound frontage road. The ramp carrying traffic from the eastbound frontage road to eastbound I-390 will remain open during construction. Traffic traveling on the eastbound frontage road and eastbound Irving Park Road will have continued access to the ramp. Westbound Irving Park Road traffic, however, will not be able access the ramp. Westbound Irving Park Road traffic can access eastbound I-390 by following the detour to Rodenburg Road and using the eastbound frontage road to access I-390 near Wright Boulevard. For additional information, visit the tollway's website.

I-90 Tollway Updates

The beams are in place for both of the Meacham Road bridges. Crews working on those structures are preparing for concrete installation by installing the wood frames that define the new roadway. Expect some daytime closures on Meacham Road in early June to support that concrete work.

The Roselle Road Bridge contractor will resume work in early June with pile-driving installation. This is the large crane and massive hammer that can be seen pounding H-shaped steel beams into the ground. This is one of the noisiest operations; updates will be provided and affected residents and businesses will be informed prior to the work beginning.

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction zone and remain cautious of their surroundings. Be sure to visit the village's website for further information and other updates on this project.
