Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive

On Saturday, May 9, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers who participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive - the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Please support our local food pantries by donating. Food pantries assist families in our community in times of hardship and are in constant need of restocking. Place non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers your mail on May 9. The postal carrier will do the rest. The food is sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry such as the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry, where it is available for needy families.

bikemonthCelebrate National Bike Month with Annual Schaumburg Bike Events

The Village of Schaumburg will hold two annual biking events in May that are free and open to the public to help celebrate National Bike Month.

To recognize Bike to Work Week May 11-15, the Village of Schaumburg is encouraging the public to bike to their respective workplaces as a way to encourage sustainability, realize economic savings, reduce obesity and increase mobility options.

On Friday, May 15 at 9:30 a.m., the public is invited to join Schaumburg President Al Larson who will lead the annual ride to work. The route will begin at Meineke Recreation Facility's bike path at 220 E. Weathersfield Way. From there, participants will ride with President Larson to Beech Drive, east on Beech to Abrahamsen Park, through Abrahamsen Park to Summit, north on Summit to the bike path entrance onto the municipal center grounds.

The public is also invited to participate in the popular Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg. The event, which is sponsored by the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District, will kick off at noon on Sunday, May 17 from Blackwell Elementary School, 345 North Walnut Lane. German Exchange visitor Heinz Kraschewski, who is the Mayor and Village Manager of the Village of Auetal, Germany, will be participating in the event.

Operation Rebuild Focuses on Volunteer Efforts in Fairdale

Firefighter/Paramedic David Sager of the Schaumburg Fire Department has been working with Operation Rebuild to assist the families impacted by the tornado that struck Fairdale, Illinois, one month ago on April 9.  Operation Rebuild is a 100 percent-run volunteer group that was founded in the midst of the Fairdale tornado recovery effort.

Members of Operation Rebuild have been volunteering daily at the site to help families sift through rubble and debris, remove debris from properties and now help with the rebuilding process.  Volunteers have helped with doing everything from building chicken coops, ram pens and barns, clearing farm fields and pastures of debris, to raising funds to purchase grills for people to reheat or cook food, to buying birthday gifts for a 4-year-old girl, helping to secure housing, and obtaining air mattresses for a family of five that had been sleeping on the floor of a friend's house for weeks.

Want to help Operation Rebuild?

  • Go to the Operation Rebuild Facebook page.
  • Volunteers who wish to help in Fairdale should visit the Facebook page to determine what jobs will be needed for the day. If you are interested in helping for the day, show up at the rally point (white semi-trailer) located across from 871 State Route 72 in Fairdale any morning at 10 a.m. for the day's projects.  Volunteers are needed 7 days a week.
  • Volunteers who wish to contribute items should consult the Facebook page to determine what items/materials are needed at that time. Items can be dropped off directly in Fairdale or at TWE Inc., located at 1440 E. Devon in Elk Grove Village. Contact Jennifer or Garry at (847) 640-3000 to schedule an appointment in the event after-hours drop-off is needed.

Operation Rebuild has committed to being on the ground for at least six months and is dedicated to helping survivors rebuild and get their lives back. For additional questions, email Firefighter/Paramedic David Sager.
