winterprepVillage Prepares for Winter Season

This past week, the Schaumburg Engineering and Public Works Department began its annual Snow and Ice Cleanup to ensure equipment and personnel are ready for the upcoming winter season.

Vehicles and equipment were cleaned, inspected and prepared for the plowing and de-icing season. Personnel also drove their assigned routes to identify any potential hazards, such as low-hanging tree limbs and manholes, that could pose an issue for plowing operations. Today a final inspection and line-up of all equipment will be conducted by supervisors who will inspect each unit to ensure that required safety and snow equipment is performing properly. Each unit will be scored and awards will be distributed at a luncheon to recognize the efforts of personnel during the cleanup.

Next week: Personnel participate in training and certification for snow and ice season...
halloweenCelebrate Halloween Safely
This year, Halloween will occur on Friday, October 31. The Village of Schaumburg has no ordinance determining Halloween hours for children; however the Schaumburg Police Department asks residents to follow the recommendations listed below to ensure the safety of all participants:
  • It is recommended that trick-or-treating be limited between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, October 31 during daylight hours.
  • Children should trick-or-treat on well-lit streets in their own neighborhood. Parents or responsible adults should accompany young children.
  • Children should never enter any home to receive treats or for any other reason.
  • If children are out after dark, one member of each group should have a flashlight.
  • Children should be dressed in light-colored clothing or wear reflective tape.
  • Costumes should fit well and not limit mobility or obstruct vision. Avoid costumes requiring "weapons" of any kind.
  • Children and adults should always walk on the sidewalks and cross streets at the crosswalks. Never run between parked vehicles.
  • All treats should be examined by a parent before they are eaten. Cut and wash fruit before eating. Throw away any unwrapped candy. Check wrapped candy for signs of tampering. Call the police to report any suspicious treats.

Households welcoming children should leave on porch lights or other exterior lighting. The Schaumburg Police Department wishes to ensure the safety and tradition of a Happy Halloween, and the department asks that motorists watch carefully for costumed children who might not be alert enough to watch out for cars.

ebolaEbola Information Resources
Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease caused by a virus. Ebola is transmitted by being in direct contact with body fluids such as blood, vomit, urine, stool or sweat from a person who is sick with Ebola. Ebola cannot be transmitted through the air, food or water.

The likelihood of an Ebola outbreak occurring in the U.S. remains extremely low even considering the confirmation of cases that may be diagnosed here. The infection control and contact investigation practices used in the U.S. are very advanced and well configured to contain infectious diseases including Ebola. The U.S. public health system has specific procedures in place to help identify and isolate persons who are sick with Ebola and to do the same for their contacts.

Recently, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced it has established an Ebola hotline at (800) 889-3931 and provided information on its website. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also another good resource for learning more about the virus. Updated information is available on their website.
