Take Charge of Your Health is an evidence-based self-management program developed by Stanford University and licensed by Age Options. This six-week interactive program is for anyone age 55 or older with an ongoing health condition such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic pain, anxiety, etc.

Senior Scam Prevention Seminar: April 23

This presentation is designed to provide awareness of scams targeting senior citizens. Speakers include detectives from the Investigations Division and members of the Crime Prevention Unit of the Schaumburg Police Department.

Schaumburg's Brush Pick-up Program runs for 24 weeks from May through October. It is not necessary to call for brush pick-up or to create a Customer Service Request, just follow the schedule listed here. It takes crews up to four days to complete the curbside brush

 

Become a Purchase Award patron for the Prairie Arts Festival either personally or through a business. Patrons who pledge to spend at least $100 with one artist will have a chance to acknowledge their support with a Purchase Award and take home their art. By committing to a Purchase Award, patrons are pledging, in advance of the event, to make a purchase at the Prairie Arts Festival. As a Purchase Award participant, an acknowledgment will be made in the Prairie Arts Festival program, and an award ribbon and sign indicating the purchaser's name, or their business' name, will be prominently displayed at the artist's display area for the duration of the festival. In addition, the artwork purchased is, of course, the patron's property.  

Another opportunity available is to place an advertisement in this year's program book; it's an excellent way of advertising your business and supporting the community.

 

The 2nd Annual Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation is a friendly, community-based competition between cities across the nation to see who can be the most "water wise." With support from Toyota, US EPA, US Forest Service, and NOAA, mayors nationwide will challenge their residents to conserve water, energy, and other natural resources on behalf of their city through a series of informative, easy-to-use online pledges.

Residents go online to www.mywaterpledge.com until April 30, enter their city name, and then make online pledges to conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollution on behalf of the village. Cities will compete in the following revised population categories for 2013: (5,000-30,000 residents, 30,000 -100,000 residents, 100,000-300,000, 300,000-600,000, and 600,000+ residents). The city with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category wins.

The Schaumburg Barn has teamed up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository of Cook County to start a free food market for Seniors 60+.

WHAT: Older Adult Markets are choice-style food pantries located in community locations or buildings that serve older adults. The markets distribute fresh fruits, vegetables, and other basic food items to older adults in the community and their households such as fresh produce, canned fruits and vegetables, rice, beans, and canned chicken or tuna.

WHEN:  

The market begins at 1pm and ends at 2:30 and is every other Friday.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

You must sign in at the market, but no ID or other documents are required.

Adhere to market guidelines at all times; those not following market guidelines may be asked to leave by the market coordinator.

A caregiver may pick up food for you if you are unable to travel, but must bring a proxy letter to the market coordinator. Caregivers can call the number below or pick up a blank proxy letter on-site at the Barn. They must fill it out and get it signed, then return it on the next market day. Pace's express bus routes are the best way to avoid dealing with heavy game traffic to Wrigley Field and the high cost of parking near the ballpark. For $4 each way, Pace's Route 228 travels directly between Schaumburg's Northwest Transportation Center, where you can park for free, and the main gates at Wrigley Field. Buses depart 30 minutes after the end of the game. The Northwest Transportation Center is located at Martingale Road and Kimberly Drive across from Streets of Woodfield.

Pace serves the home opener games, all night, weekend and holiday games, and every game in June, July,and August. There is no service to daytime weekday games in April, May, September, or October.

The 74th Anniversary Convention of the Central States Numismatic Society is coming to the Renaissance Convention Center - April 24-27. The show will feature 250 booths of coins, currency, tokens, medals, and supplies for coin collectors. There will be activities for all ages and exhibits of valuable coins. A Civil War Seminar will take place for history lovers. A world class coin auction will include the extremely rare 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, a coin that should bring in excess of $1 million. Admission is free. Show opens at 10am.
