In return for your hospitality, you will have an opportunity to visit Schaumburg, Germany as part of one of Schaumburg Sister Cities program's upcoming exchanges. Schaumburg Resident Pens Book on 1910 Chicago Stock Yard Fire
Fire Strikes the Chicago Stock Yards, A History of Flame and Folly in the Jungle, was co-written by Schaumburg resident Alex A. Burkholder. With a forward written by former Schaumburg Fire Chief Ed Lacey, this book tells the story of 21 firemen and three civilians who were killed in a blaze at a beef warehouse - the largest death toll for an organized fire department in the nation prior to 9/11. The meatpackers who ran the yards considered the constant threat of fire as part of the cost of doing business, shrugging it off with an, "It's all right, we're fully covered." For the firefighters who were forced to plunge into the flames again and again, it was an entirely different matter.
Burkholder, who wrote the book with John Hogan, began learning about the Chicago Fire Department as a youth, riding to fires on the engines and helping to extinguish the flames. He went on to become a news producer and writer for WGN-TV/Radio and ABC7 Chicago. Burkholder is a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago and presently works as a freelance writer.
This book is available at local stores and online.
