"Simply put: we need a new hospital"
Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD

IMAGINE. No ferry. No air service. No helipad ... No hospital.

But the reality is we have an on-island hospital today - but what about tomorrow? Nantucket Cottage Hospital has the people: a talented and dedicated management and staff, an on-island medical staff that embraces new technology in healthcare delivery and is passionate about caring for their patients, and increased access to some of the best clinical specialists along with other incredible resources due to our affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners HealthCare.

But an aging building is putting our hospital at risk: eventually our building will be unable to meet modern regulatory standards and technology requirements and is becoming increasingly expensive to operate; we need a new hospital before too long.

Careful work is already underway to design and build a new hospital capable of serving the health care needs of Nantucket for generations to come. To ensure that NCH continues to be our community's wellness leader and health safety-net, all members of the Nantucket community are called upon to lend their support.

Coming together - Building Our Future, Committed to Care - we will accomplish this vision and raise the needed funds in our upcoming Capital Campaign. The future of Nantucket Cottage Hospital is in your hands.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital Teams Up With
Maria Mitchell Association to Host Family-Friendly NanoDays

NanoDays on Nantucket is part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering. This is the second year NanoDays has come to Nantucket with new and exciting activities.

The NanoDays events create learning experiences for both children and adults to explore the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. Events combine fun hands-on activities with demonstrations on current research. These programs demonstrate the special and unexpected properties found at the nanoscale, examine tools used by nanoscientists (including doctors), showcase nano materials with spectacular promise, and invite discussion of technology and society.

Drop in to explore how 3D images are made, investigate new nano products and materials, and image what the world might look like if we could build an elevator to space! Other activities include making bracelets that change color in the sun and a story time reading of Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!

Patient Safety Awareness Week
March 3 - 9, 2013

In an effort to raise awareness and encourage the engagement of patients, families, health care providers, and the public, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has announced its participation in the 2013 Patient Safety Awareness Week campaign, Patient Safety 7/365.

Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual education and awareness campaign for health care safety led by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF). Each year, health care organizations around the world take part in the event by prominently displaying the campaign logo and promotional materials within their organizations, creating awareness in the community, and utilizing NPSF educational resources with hospital staff.

Patient Safety Awareness Week, which NPSF created in 2002, will be recognized March 3-9, 2013. This year's theme, Patient Safety 7/365, highlights the need for everyone to understand the importance of focusing on patient safety all year round. The 7 days of the campaign also serve as time to recognize the range of work being done to improve health care safety worldwide.

"I spent last Fourth of July sick in bed. The worst was over in about four days, but I continued to have symptoms. Although my primary care physician is in Pennsylvania, I didn't want to wait two or three hours to be seen in the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Emergency Room, because I didn't want to add to the ER's patient load. I knew my condition was non-life threatening, and I was sure they were busy with more critical patients. Fortunately, I had read about the hospital's new MD ACKcess phone line, which gives residents and seasonal visitors access to primary care clinicians. I called MD ACKcess at 9:30 am and was given an appointment with one of the Massachusetts General visiting physicians at 11:45 am. There was no wait when I arrived, and I was on a course of antibiotics by 1:30 pm. Happily, I was back to my old self within a few days and able once again to enjoy my time on Nantucket."
