As representatives of Nantucket Cottage Hospital, its administrators, trustees and staff, we greatly appreciate your support throughout the year. With the help and support of the Nantucket community, Nantucket Cottage Hospital had a remarkable year of achievements. Below are a few of our proudest accomplishments from 2012:
- Our new MD ACKcess telephone line, 508-825-1000, makes it easier for patients to schedule a visit for primary care rather than using our Emergency Room for a non-emergency illness
- We increased availability of primary care with more office hours and the addition of visiting doctors from Massachusetts General Hospital
- We began the implementation of electronic health records, which will result in a fully computerized, digital record-keeping system at the hospital
- Two new physicians joined the year-round staff of NCH, Dr. Nicole Steinmuller and Dr. Richard Koehler
This hospital is here for you and your family's well-being. We're working hard every day to improve and expand how our hospital provides health care to everyone on Nantucket. This includes adopting the most advanced technology and latest medical training, and using resources of our acclaimed affiliates MGH and Partners Healthcare to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. Thank you for helping us in our quest to make Nantucket Cottage Hospital the best community hospital anywhere.
Best wishes for a healthy 2013,
 | Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD, President & CEO |
 | Michael A. F. Roberts, Chairman of the Board, NCH |

This year, Nantucket Cottage Hospital served thousands of people in our community in countless ways. From bringing babies into the world, providing emergency care and diagnostic services, dialysis, chemotherapy and radiology to physical therapy, our incredible staff, along with our Massachusetts General Hospital partners has had a very busy year. This affiliation with MGH, ranked #1 in the country by U.S. News & World Report, strengthens our hospital and the community by bringing us a variety of state of the art clinical resources and new relationships.
To gain momentum for this year's annual fund, longtime Nantucket resident Roy Flanders made a challenge pledge to the island community, offering $250,000 in one-to-one matching dollars for new donations to NCH's annual fund by December 31, 2012. Mr. Flanders encourages us all to think, "can you imagine Nantucket without a hospital?"
We are pleased to be co-chairing the Annual Fund for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. The funds raised provide the added financial support needed to deliver the quality of care you deserve for all your heath care needs.
Warm regards,

Announcing the Appointment of Jay Bowen
Nantucket Cottage Hospital has appointed John J. Bowen as Executive Director of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation and Vice President for Institutional Advancement of the hospital.
Jay Bowen brings to the position many years of experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising and institutional development. For the last six-and-a-half years, he was president of the Animal Rescue League of Boston, where he led the organization through a major rebranding and oversaw a tripling of public financial support for the organization. From 1994-2005, Bowen was Vice President for Development and External Affairs at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA).
Bowen has previous fundraising experience on Nantucket. From 1995-1998 he directed the capital campaign for the new MSPCA facility on Crooked Lane, which included a veterinary hospital, shelter and wildlife rehabilitation center. Before that, he held senior development positions at Emerson College, Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and at Endicott College.
"Jay will bring a passion for the philanthropy and for the mission and future of Nantucket Cottage Hospital," said Dr. Margot Hartmann, President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Bowen will oversee the foundation staff at the hospital and be responsible for all hospital fundraising efforts including its annual appeal and the annual Boston Pops on Nantucket concert. He assumes his new position on January 2, 2013.

"I first used Nantucket Cottage Hospital's Swing Bed Program last year, after a knee operation. While I was there, doctors discovered I had a heart problem, which led to heart surgery at MGH. After that, I came back to Swing Bed for another two weeks. The nursing staff was great. When I needed the care, they were right there. They were nice, knowledgeable and kept my family and me well informed. They helped me stay calm. It was wonderfully convenient to be here, close to my family and friends. It kept travel costs down for all of us. People don't realize how fortunate we are."
