Is your pet a pleasure or a pain?

In this month's Spotlight, we discuss manners, and give you some tips for improving your pet's behavior so he's more of a pleasure, and less of a pain, to have around. We'll focus on dogs, but these basic elements of behavior modification work for cats as well. (Although it may take more practice and patience to train a cat.)

There's one important truth in the science of animal behavior, and once you understand it, you'll be in a better position to work with your dog to help him improve his behavior.  It may seem simplistic, but it is the basis for all the dog training we do, and it absolutely works.

The concept is simple, but it's not always easy. Sometimes we reward them without even knowing it, because we don't always know what motivates our dogs. For example, think about the dog that jumps up on you or your guests when you walk in the door. Our natural instinct is to push him away, but that's actually the wrong move. The act of pushing him away is actually doggie language for "Let's play!", so he takes that as an invitation to jump on you again. He wants your attention, so he jumps on you. Then you reward him by pushing him away. And a dog will repeat the behaviors you reward.

We discuss the proper technique for correcting the jumping dog problem on our blog post: Click to read about Correcting the Jumping Dog .

Article1Choosing the right reward
At Bewaggle, we believe in using positive reinforcement to train our own dogs and our clients' dogs.  No screaming,no shock collars, no rolled up newspaper.  Reward-based training works, and it helps to strengthen the bond between a dog and his owner.

A dog will repeat the behaviors you reward. That's the proven fact that is the foundation for reward-based training. But in order for the reward to work, you have to know what motivates your dog, because not all dogs appreciate the same rewards.

Imagine a boss who held a contest among his employees to see who could sell the most widgets in a month.  And the prize was two tickets to the ballet.  Well, if you love the ballet, you might work really hard to sell a lot of widgets.  But if you don't really like ballet, that prize wouldn't motivate you too well.  It's the same with dogs.

Some dogs are very easily motivated by food.  If your dog is one of them, keeping a supply of tasty training treats on hand is essential to your training success. But many dogs care less about food and more about toys. If that's your dog, keep a special toy out of reach until you're ready to work with him, then use the toy as incentive to follow your commands.  The video below shows just how effective this can be!

A poorly behaved dog is a pain in the tush, but a well-trained dog is a joy to be around. An investment in getting it right can pay dividends every day, for many years to come.  Call us for more information about our dog training services.  386-956-1151
