Is it possible to train a cat?

That's a question we hear quite often.  So this month, we've decided to dedicate the Spotlight to taking our feline friends Back-to-School.  At Bewaggle, a big part of our business is providing training for puppies and adult dogs, but cat owners often want to know if we also train cats.  (And sometimes, people ask if we can train their children or spouses, but we are definitely not qualified in those areas.)

So this edition of the Spotlight includes two articles related to the training of cats.

There's always something fun and exciting going on at Bewaggle, and we're excited to share our news and information with you. Read on and share in the excitement!

All the best,

Anchor1Is it possible to train a cat?
Cat owners ask us all the time, "Is it possible to train a cat?"  The short answer is yes, it certainly can be done, and lots of cat owners have trained their cats to do remarkable tricks and follow a number of commands.  In fact, the same techniques we use to train dogs will also work with cats.  But you ask your kitty to fetch your slippers, there are a few things you need to understand about training cats.
  1. Cats, like dogs and humans, respond well to positive reinforcement.  They will repeat the behaviors you reward. So if you want your cat to stay off your counters, make sure you reward him for waiting on the floor, and don't feed him immediately after removing him from the counter.
  2. Cats are generally more independent, and less interested in pleasing their owners than dogs are.  (I know there are exceptions, so don't shoot me for voicing this generalization. In general, I believe it's true.)  So your rewards need to be something the cat wants that he only gets when he's done something you want to reward.
  3. Training any animal takes time, repetition, consistency, and patience. Training cats usually takes a lot more of each of those.
  4. Training your cat to obey your house rules, and even to do tricks and play games, can be enormously rewarding.  Your investment in time and effort will pay off in a well-behaved pet and a closer relationship between the two of you.
Article1Training your cat to use the toilet
If you believe that it's unnatural for a cat to use a human toilet, or you just don't want to share your toilet with your cat, then this article may be of no interest to you. But there are a number of compelling reasons to consider toilet training your cat, including these:
  1. Never BUY litter again.
  2. Never SMELL litter again.
  3. Never CHANGE litter again.
  4. Never SWEEP litter again.
  5. Never FIGHT over who should clean the litter box again.
  6. Never TOUCH a cat's feet that have walked in litter.
  7. It's cleaner, healthier, and a lot easier for your family.
  8. Training a cat to use a toilet is a lot easier than you might think!
There are a number of products on the market that help you toilet train your cat. One of our faves is called "Citi Kitty". (You may have seen this product on Shark Tank.) For about $30, you get everything you need to train your kitten or adult cat to use the toilet.  The consumer reviews suggest it can be done in just a few weeks.  For more information, you can check out these two product websites:
