PetSaverFirst Responders Learn Pet First Aid

Thanks to a co-sponsorship by Bewaggle Pet Services and the Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce, four First Responders from the City of Sanford Fire Department were given training in Pet First Aid and Pet CPR this week.  It's not uncommon for firefighters to encounter injured animals in the course of their work. "We want our First Responders to know how to help those pets," explains Paula Carlson, President of Bewaggle, and certified trainer of Pet First Aid.  "Providing this class to them is one way we give back to our First Responders and the community at large."

The full-day training class covers many topics of Pet First Aid, and gives the attendees the knowledge and hands-on practice they need to respond to a wide variety of pet emergencies.  Bewaggle is a Pet Sitting company that requires this training for all of their employees, and they invited the First Responders to participate free of charge.  "We couldn't have done that without the Chamber's participation," Carlson said.  "They provided the training space and we provided everything else.  It was really a community effort."

Four First Responders were chosen to participate from the City of Sanford Fire Department.  According to Battalion Chief, Chris Murphy, "The offer was well received by the members of our department and there was no problem finding willing candidates."

The attendees from the SFD were Lieutenant Mike Uglione, Firefighter/EMT Jim Slapa, Firefighter/EMT, David Bruce, and Firefighter/Paramedic Patrick Wolf.

"The Chamber of Commerce was delighted to join in this effort," said Frank Hale, Executive Director of the Chamber. "This is a great service to the community and we are very pleased to be a part of it."   Carlson added that Bewaggle does this training at least twice a year, and hopes to include more First Responders in the future. "Our company is focused on the well-being of pets. That's what we do.  Bringing this training to the area's First Responders is something that fits in perfectly with our mission."

The holidays can be stressful times for all of us, including our pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pets merry and bright this holiday season.
  1. Pay attention. You're crazy busy, we know. But your pets need your attention, especially when their routines get disrupted. Be sure to make time for them too.
  2. Easy on the treats. Your diet may include more sweets and snacks than usual this month, but your pet's diet shouldn't. With the stress of changes in routine and visitors, the last thing he needs is digestive problems.
  3. Exercise. Just like humans, pets need regular exercise - especially during these stressful times. They will be happier, healthier, and better companions for you and your guests if they are getting plenty of healthy exercise.
  4. Ask for help. If your crazy holiday schedule doesn't include enough time to exercise and pamper your pets, call us! Bewaggle can provide the attention and care they need, so you can concentrate on the rest of your holiday commitments.
Remember that these are stressful days for you and your pets, but with a little planning, everyone can enjoy the best the holidays have to offer.
Article2aBewaggle is HIRING!

We need some great pet sitters who live in Seminole County, specifically in the cities of Lake Mary, Heathrow, Longwood, Altamonte Springs and Winter Springs.  The ideal candidate will:
  • Be a true animal lover, first and foremost!
  • Have at least 10 years work experience. Not necessarily in the animal care industry, but we need people with a proven track record of excellence and professionalism.
  • Have complete control over their own schedule.  We can't work around school and work schedules, as our clients' needs have to come first. This could be a great fit for retirees and the self-employed!
  • Have basic computer skills and a functional home computer and printer.  (A smart phone is not a requirement, but it's a huge advantage.)
If you or someone you know would like to get paid to play with pets, all the information and the application are available on our website. Click here to learn more.

It's a question we get asked quite often, and we want to set the record straight. There's actually no  such thing as a Pet Sitter license (at least not in Florida). But there are legal requirements that every pet sitter must follow, but that very few pet sitters do. Read more...
