NOV 2013

It's November, and that means Thanksgiving!  Food, football, family and fun!  But Thanksgiving is also a time when many pet owners find themselves at the emergency Veterinary Hospital because of something their pet has eaten that they shouldn't have. Sneaky counter-surfing can result in severe poisoning to your pet, and that can ruin your holiday in an instant.  And when you have to induce vomiting in your dog, in front of all your friends and family, that can put a real damper on the festivities too.  (Never induce vomiting unless directed to do so by your veterinarian or an animal poison control helpline, of course.)

Here are a few tips to help assure your holiday doesn't include a trip to the veterinarian.

  1. Keep pets out of the kitchen - preferably crated.  You'll be busy with preparations and guests, and pets will take advantage of any opportunity to counter-surf.
  2. Tell your guests not to feed the pets.  A nibble or two from every guest can quickly add up to disaster.
  3. Empty the trash.  Don't leave those tempting scraps, bones and drippings in the trash can unattended.
  4. If you think your pet might have ingested something unsafe, contact the Pet Poison Control Hotline at
    (888) 426-4435.
A personal note about the Thanksgiving holiday:
These days, there are plenty of reasons to despair and worry - about our economy, our country, our environment, and more.  So this month, I'm trying to focus on what is right in my life, and the joys and blessings I can and do appreciate. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I wish for each of you the peace and joy that comes from feeling truly thankful.

Article1Bewaggle's "Ten-Fold Marketing" Supports K9s for Warriors
If you've known our CEO, Marianne Carlson, for long, you may know she wrote the book on Ten-Fold Marketing. So it's only natural that Bewaggle would find a way to give back to the community and support a worthy cause.  Today, we are very excited to announce that we've chosen K9s for Warriors as our corporate charity.

The mission of K9s for Warriors is to rescue dogs from shelters, then train those dogs to rescue US Military veterans suffering from PTSD.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, more of America's military heros have died from suicide than have died in combat, and K9s for Warriors is helping those vets who are most at risk.  This is a cause we believe in and one that touches our hearts deeply, and this charity has passed our careful evaluation.  So a portion of our profits will go directly to K9s for Warriors, and we'll work to promote their efforts in every way we can.

Article2 5 Questions to Ask Your Pet Sitter
When pet owners have to leave town - whether for business or pleasure - finding someone to care for their pets is a necessary, and sometimes daunting task. Boarding a pet is usually considered the most affordable option, but many pets can't handle the stress, especially at night when no one's around to comfort them.  If you decide that an in-home pet sitter is the better alternative for you and your pets, here are five questions you should ask, just to be certain you're all on the same page.

  1. May I call your references? Your pet sitter will have access to your entire home, your personal property and your private information.  You need to be certain this is a person worthy of the trust you're about to bestow.
  2. What is your game plan?  Discuss with your pet sitter what she will do with your pet each day.  What activities does she have planned, and how much time will they spend playing and exercising together?
  3. Are you bonded and insured?  Ask for a copy of their policy or their proof of insurance.  Don't just take Yes for an answer.  If anything happens to your pet, your property, or someone else's property while your sitter is on the job, that insurance could save you a bundle of money and headaches.
  4. What treats and snacks will you give my pet?  You will likely provide the regular food for your pets to eat while you're away, but often, Pet Sitters bring special treats and snacks with them, as a way of making friends.  You should get some assurance that the treats they will bring will be safe, healthy and appropriate for your pet's breed, age, weight and health status.
  5. What is Plan B?  Stuff happens.  Your Pet sitter, like anyone else, could get sick, or hurt, or their mother could fall and break a hip.   If something comes up that would keep your sitter from performing her duties, what plan is in place to bring in a replacement?  Who would that be?  How would the new person get the keys, the owner's instructions, and other information she would need?  How can you be sure this is someone you trust in your home, caring for your animals?

At Bewaggle, we love it when a client asks these questions!  It shows us that the client is not only a loving pet owner, but a wise consumer as well.
