Slow Food O'ahu Annual Meeting
Sunday, January 26 - 11:00 a.m. followed by potluck
Waldorf School in 'Aina Haina

The Waldorf Upper Campus (5257 Kalaniana'ole Hwy. in 'Aina Haina) welcomes us once again for our annual meeting on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  This is YOUR opportunity to contribute to the direction of Slow Food O'ahu in 2014.

During the business portion of our meeting you will have an opportunity to:
*  Hear a re-cap our 2013 events;
*  Provide suggestions for 2014 events;
*  Learn about our Slow Food O'ahu Chinatown tour, our snail survey, and other projects;
*  Obtain a financial update and how we use our funds to support delegates to Terra Madre.

We will also have a tasting of ulu (breadfruit) for your enjoyment with a small demonstration on how to determine maturity and slow the ripening process.

We are particularly seeking individuals who are interested in joining the Board or helping us in the following ways:

*  Develop events - cooking or other food-sharing events, hosting speakers, sponsoring movies, monitoring GMO and other related legislation for possible SFO advocacy ... the options are wide open to whatever you wish to make of the organization.
*  Coordinate reservations for our events.
*  Maintain our Facebook page.
*  Maintain a list of food-related establishments that meet our snail criteria for posting on our website.

As always, we don't only share information with you; we are planning a potluck for all to share in the bounty of our island-grown produce. We encourage you to buy local for your potluck dish --or if you have a home garden--to share your harvest with us.  Our Slow Food O'ahu potlucks have some of the best, healthiest, and local potluck dishes that you will find anywhere.

Please remember to bring your own eating utensils (plate, cutlery, and napkin) and beverages.

The parking at the school is very limited. There's street parking across the highway and in the `Aina Haina Shopping Center. Be mindful of jay-walking fines and be careful crossing the highway.

Slow Food O`ahu is YOUR organization, please join us and participate in planning and shaping the activities for 2014. Please R.S.V.P. regarding your attendance at sfo.reservation@gmail.com
Nepalese Dinner in Hawaii  - February 15, 2014
Private home in Kahala - 6 p.m.

Our last Nepalese dinner was such a popular event that we have decided to host another with a different menu.  Chef Sanjeev invites you to another Nepalese dinner on February 15 with an enticing menu that includes hot off the griddle roti (an unleavened bread), daal and saffron rice, tomato and cilantro chutney, spinach, and goat or lamb curry. Dessert will be gajar halwa--a carrot pudding. Exotic spices will waft throughout the kitchen to whet the diners' appetites. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Arrangements may be made to participate in the preparations that afternoon.

Bring wine or beer to enhance your dining experience--Gewuerztraminer would definitely complement this feast or a wine that has both good fruit, minerality, and acidity. Of course, one can never go wrong with Champagne.

The cost is $35 for Slow Food O`ahu members and $40 for non-members. Limited attendance in a private home in Kahala. Please make reservations by Tuesday, February 11 at  sfo.reservation@gmail.com.

Please note:  Due to the nature of this event and the necessity of arranging details beforehand beforehand, if cancellations are required after the RSVP date and we are unable to fill your spot, you will be responsible for payment.   Payment information will be sent to you following your RSVP and the meeting location will be sent to all confirmed guests a few days prior to the event.
Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship
U.C. Berkeley - Deadline March 1

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is offering eight $10,000 postgraduate Food and Farming Journalism Fellowships in a new program established by Michael Pollan, the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley. The fellowship, a project of the Knight Center in Science and Environmental Journalism, is supported by a grant from The 11th Hour Project, a program of The Schmidt Family Foundation. Aimed at early and mid career journalists, the Fellowship presents an opportunity to report ambitious long form stories on the full range of subjects under the rubric of food systems: agricultural and nutritional policy, the food industry, food science, technology and culture, rural and urban farming, agriculture and the environment (including climate change), global trade and supply chains, consolidation and securitization of the food system and public health as it relates to food and farming.

In 2014 eight journalists will receive $10,000 to travel and report these stories. In 2014, the fellowship will be open to both print and radio journalists; in future years, it will expand to include multi-media and video journalists. We will give preference to U.S. focused stories, but will also consider international stories with a strong U.S. angle or connection.

Online applications are due March 1, 2014.
