CARITAS at Reveille Beginning July 20

Volunteers, towels, DVDs, and

magazines are still needed

The Reveille family will welcome as many as 40 adult men from CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter) from July 20-27, and we need your help.  There are THREE big ways you can participate:

  1. Help set up cots Saturday morning, July 20, or break down cots Saturday morning, July 27. Eight people are needed. To volunteer, please contact Gretchen Biernot at gwbiernot@hanovercounty.gov.
  2. Donate new and gently-used towels, DVDs (rated PG-13 or below), or magazines by dropping them off near the elevator on the red carpet.
  3. Sign up to volunteer one night. We need volunteers to prepare and serve dinner, pack lunches, visit with the men in the evening, or stay overnight (in a private room, always with a CARITAS staff person on site). Join one of the groups listed below on a day that works for you by contacting the volunteer in charge of that night.

The Reveille Window

Goes Monthly in August

As previously announced, this is the last weekly issue of The Reveille Window. Prior to the end of July, the first monthly issue of The Reveille Window will be published.

Watch, also, for the first issue of The Reveille Call, our new weekly publication. The Call will include a calendar, worship information, congregational care updates, and a link to the monthly newsletter.

Summer Book Review:

Local author comes to Reveille this Wednesday

On Wednesday, July 24, local author and VCU professor Walter S. Griggs Jr. will be at Reveille to discuss his book The Collapse of Richmond's Church Hill Tunnel. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Richmond's railroads were a lifeline in reconstruction efforts, but this tunnel, completed in December 1873, was soon rendered obsolete. In 1925, an effort to renovate and reopen it met with dire results, chronicled in this book.

Griggs has worked at the VCU School of Business for more than 30 years, teaching history, business law, and honors courses, and he is known for his keen sense of humor (read the student reviews of his class online). His previous books include Hidden History of Richmond and A Moose's History of North America.

Refreshments will be served in the welcome center at 10:30 am, and the book review begins at 11:00 am in the chapel. Child care is available.

Church Family Potluck and Movie Night on July 24

Join us for a church family potluck and movie night as we welcome CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter) guests Wednesday, July 24, at 6:15 pm in the fellowship hall. Enjoy fried chicken and a movie along with Reveille members and up to 40 male guests from the CARITAS program.

Bring a side dish or dessert to share with everyone. If you can come, please contact Lori Epps at  children@reveilleumc.org by Monday, July 22. We hope everyone turns out for this opportunity to share God's love with those in urgent need.

Announcement of Called Charge Conference on July 24

A called charge conference will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at 7:30 pm in the welcome center. Richmond District Superintendent, the Reverend Dr. Steve Jones, authorized Reveille's senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jim Noland, to preside at this meeting.

The purpose of this called charge conference is to adopt a housing exclusion agreement for the Reverend Katie B. Anthony. All may attend, but only members of the Church Council and the clergy may vote. [For an explanation of the clergy housing exclusion, click here.]

Vacation Bible School volunteers and

construction helpers are needed!

We have more than 100 children registered to attend Vacation Bible School, God's Everywhere Fun Fair, July 29 - August 2. To volunteer to help with VBS, please contact Jennifer Rosen at jrosen@prrlawfirm.com. We also need someone handy to construct a few basic carnival games.

Habitat spots are going fast

The Habitat house calendar has been filled for July, and spots in August are going quickly! The next spots available in the coming month are Thursday, August 1 (second-floor framing, four people needed), Wednesday, August 14 (plumbing, 10 people needed), and Thursday, August 15 (plumbing, 10 people needed).  August 14 and 15 would be wonderful opportunities for group build days. Please email Abby Baker and Heather MacIver at reveillehabitat@gmail.com if you are interested in any of these dates.
