TopThe Reveille Window

Goes Monthly in August

Later this summer, Reveille will transition to a new, and improved, method of communicating important information to the congregation. Currently, many members rely on The Reveille Window, which you receive weekly electronically or via the mail. For the last several months, the Communications Committee has been taking an inventory of the many ways in which Reveille communicates with our different audiences. Our goal has been to ensure that we are getting the right information to the right people in a way that is timely, useful for them, and efficient for the church. We want to make sure we have the appropriate mix of ways of communicating and also want to continue to promote the website as a valuable resource for those members for whom this is convenient.

As part of this review, we have decided to make a change to the format and timing of The Window. Starting in August, The Window will change from a weekly to a monthly publication. We also will have a new weekly communication to the congregation - The Weekly Trumpet. This new weekly communication will have a different style and format from the current Window - it will be a short calendar-style listing of events and opportunities for the upcoming week and will not include the more detailed information contained in The Window.

The primary reason behind this change is two-fold. First, we want to be more strategic and targeted in how and when we communicate with the congregation. A monthly Window allows church staff, and others, more time to develop a communications plan that is better tailored to seasonal and other longer-term needs. The Weekly Trumpet will fill the void of getting the congregation timely information on upcoming events and opportunities.

Second, this change will allow the staff to be more effective with their time, which is a valuable commodity. The process for creating the current weekly Window can be very time-consuming, and this change will allow staff to be more efficient, while still serving the needs of the congregation.

Thank you for your support during this transition, and we welcome any feedback that you have.

Andy Poarch, Communications Committee Chair

Deadline for Last Weekly Window and

for First Monthly are Both July 10

The July 21 issue will be the last weekly Reveille Window. The deadline for article submission for this issue is Wednesday, July 10. This issue is planned for electronic transmission on Wednesday, July 17, with the paper version to follow for those who receive church news by regular mail. This issue of The Reveille Window (weekly) will have the same function and appearance it has had since the first electronic version was sent in 2009.

During the production of the weekly July 21 issue, the first monthly issue, August 2013, also will be in production. This new monthly newsletter will introduce a new look, which will evolve over the next few months. The deadline for article submission for the August issue is also Wednesday, July 10. The August 2013 issue will arrive electronically during the last week of July, with a paper version to follow for those who receive church news by regular mail.

Please submit articles for publication to the staff person related to the particular ministry being publicized. When submitting an article for either the last weekly issue (July 21) or the first monthly issue of The Reveille Window (August), please be sure to specify for which issue you are submitting.

Combined Adult Summer Sunday School

Starts this Sunday

9:30 am Sundays in July and August

This summer, as we come together as a church to know, love, and serve God, we are finding new ways to grow together in faith and fellowship. Join us for this exciting lineup of teachers, studies, and speakers for adult Sunday school in July and August:

July 7-August 4: Adult Sunday School in Room 211

(Wesleyan Fellowship classroom)

Join us for an Independence Day celebration on July 7 before starting a four-week journey, led by Andy Weaver, through Luke chapters 10-12 in which we will prepare for worship each week by exploring examples Jesus gave us to respond to the gospel.

*Note: The College and Young Adult class will continue to meet in Room 206 as they study When Christians Get it Wrong by Adam Hamilton.

August 11-25: Intergenerational Sunday School in the Youth Center

What is it like to be a child, youth, young adult, or senior adult at Reveille? What experiences, needs, gifts, and vision does each age group have to share? Join us for three weeks in August in the youth center for a time of music, personal testimony, and reflection.  Second through fifth grade will join all youth and adults for the first half hour before leaving to participate in an activity in another classroom.

Clergy 2013

Clergy Reappointed to Reveille

Reveille's three pastors were reappointed to our church by Bishop Young Jin Cho at the Virginia United Methodist Church Annual Conference, held June 21 - 23, in the Hampton Roads Convention Center:

The Rev. Dr. James R. Noland, Senior Pastor, elder in full connection, who is beginning his eighth year at Reveille;

The Rev. Katie B. Anthony, Associate Pastor, provisional elder, who is in her second year;

The Rev. Stephen A. Coleman, Associate Pastor, full-time local pastor, who is in year four in this current appointment after serving more than eight years as our  Minister for Congregational Care.

Clergy appointments are for July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014.

Reveille is very pleased to have these dedicated pastors return to lead our congregation as we continue the journey together with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Please join me and give Jim, Katie B., and Stephen a hearty welcome back.

Elaine Kastelberg to Leave Reveille's Weekday School

Elaine Kastelberg Reveille bids farewell to Elaine B. Kastelberg, Reveille Weekday School (WDS) Director, as  she leaves August 31, 2013, after 25 years of extraordinary service to this ministry. It is through her leadership, dedication, and commitment that Reveille has become one of the premiere preschool programs in Richmond and surrounding counties. With some 200 children each year - ages 12 months to kindergarten entry - and a teaching staff of 30, Reveille WDS has long been recognized as a nationally accredited program with a wonderful staff whose longevity is unmatched. As Director, Elaine has led the preschool in offering an outstanding intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical growth experience for each child in a nurturing and supportive environment. She has touched the lives of hundreds of children and families at Reveille and in the community.

As she departs, Elaine leaves the school in a healthy and secure place with full accreditation by the NAC (National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs) and a team of talented and devoted teachers, who are committed to excellence and provide exemplary best practice in the field of early childhood education. Although we are sad to see Elaine go, we wish her Godspeed as she sets forth on the next chapter of her life.

A reception to recognize and thank Elaine will be held later in the summer. Watch The Reveille Window for an announcement. For more information about Reveille's weekday school ministry, go to https://reveilleweekday.com/

A search committee for the Weekday School Director, composed of representatives from the WDS board, teachers, parents, ministry staff, and the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee, has been established. Co-chairs are Bonnie Overacre and Lori Epps, and members include:  Sharon Anderegg, Kathy Beasley, Paige Bell, Lisa Fisher, Paulette Greentree, Laura Lay, Corbin Neuner, and Gail Vest. The position description and application procedures may be accessed from Reveille's website at http://www.reveilleumc.org/

 CARITAS Host Week, July 20-27

The Reveille family will welcome as many as 40 adult men from CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter) from July 20-27, and we need your help.  There are THREE big ways you can participate:

  2. Donate new and gently-used towels, DVDs (rated PG-13 or below), or magazines by dropping them off by the elevator on the red carpet.
  3. Sign up to volunteer one night. Join one of the following groups listed below on a day that works for you by contacting the volunteer in charge of that night.

Together, let us answer God's call to feed the hungry, love the poor, and clothe our neighbors!

Local Author to be Featured

in Next Summer Book Review

On Wednesday, July 24, local author and VCU professor Walter S. Griggs, Jr. will be at Reveille to discuss his book The Collapse of Richmond's Church Hill Tunnel. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Richmond's railroads were a lifeline in reconstruction efforts, but this tunnel, completed in December 1873, was soon rendered obsolete. In 1925, an effort to renovate and reopen it met with dire results, chronicled in this book.

Griggs, who has worked at the VCU School of Business for more than 30 years, teaches history, honors courses, and business law. He is known for his keen sense of humor (read the student reviews of his class online). His previous books include Hidden History of Richmond and A Moose's History of North America.

Refreshments will be served in the welcome center at 10:30 am, and the book review begins at 11:00 am in the chapel. Child care is available.
