Sign-up for Habitat

Join the Reveille summer of service! Starting June 20 and continuing through November, Reveille will build a new home for a single mom, Dina, and her four children with Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. The house is located on McRand Street, close to Swansboro Elementary where Reveille members are actively engaged.

We need at least 250 volunteers to help with the build and other activities. The build calendar showing dates and number of volunteers and instructions for how to sign up for your preferred date can be found at  http://www.reveilleumc.org/reveille-habitat-house. Please visit the welcome center or email Abby Baker or Heather MacIver for more information at [email protected]. Thank you for being part of our fellowship in Christ with the greater Swansboro community.

Combined Adult Summer Sunday School

9:30 am Sundays in July and August

This summer, as we come together as a church to know, love, and serve God, we are finding new ways to grow together in faith and fellowship. Join us for this exciting lineup of teachers, studies, and speakers for adult Sunday school in July and August:

July 7-August 4: Adult Sunday School in Room 211

(Wesleyan Fellowship classroom)

Join us for an Independence Day celebration on July 7 before starting a four-week journey, led by Andy Weaver, through Luke chapters 10-12 in which we will prepare for worship each week by exploring examples Jesus gave us to respond to the gospel.

*Note: The College and Young Adult class will continue to meet in Room 206 as they study When Christians Get it Wrong by Adam Hamilton

August 11-25: Intergenerational Sunday School in the Youth Center

What is it like to be a child, youth, young adult, or senior adult at Reveille? What experiences, needs, gifts, and vision does each age group have to share? Join us for three weeks in August in the youth center for a time of music, personal testimony, and reflection.  Second through fifth grade will join all youth and adults for the first half hour before leaving to participate in an activity in another classroom.

Friends of the Homeless Hot Meal

Smells of roasting chicken and hot potato casseroles will waft through the hall at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church on June 27 as we once again provide our monthly hot noontime meal to some of Richmond's less fortunate through Friends of the Homeless. Can we count on your help to make this happen?

We need one dozen potato casseroles and plenty of homemade desserts delivered to the fellowship hall by 10:45 am June 27. You may also drop them off earlier in the week. Please label them with FOH and your name and leave them in the walk-in fridge. Five or six servers are needed who can carpool to Mt. Moriah from Reveille at 10:45 am or meet us there at 11:45 am to help serve. If you need child care, contact Lori Epps before June 20.

Please add your name to the sign-up board in the welcome center for any of these services. That's also where you will find potato casserole recipes and drop off instructions. Please contact Joanna Tilley at [email protected] or call Katie B. Anthony at the church office at 359-6041, ext. 111 for more information.

Look for Three Gospel Sermon Series

throughout the Summer

This summer Reveille's worship services will take a deeper look at the Gospel with three different sermon series. Look for opportunities to prepare yourself for worship including the Adult GPS, the Family GPS, and the book Interpretation: Philippians and Galatians. See below for the upcoming worship schedule:

What is the Gospel?

June 2 - July 7

A deep look at what the Book of Galatians tells us about the Gospel.

How do we respond to the Gospel?

July 14 - August 4

Examining examples Jesus gives us to respond to the Gospel in Luke 10-12.

Are the prophets speaking the Gospel?

August 11 - September 1

Exploring the ways difficult prophetic Old Testament passages

from Jeremiah and Isaiah help us to understand the Gospel.

Did You Know that Reveille has Gardens?

June is a busy month in the Reveille gardens with trimming bushes, laying new pine needles around bushes, potting geraniums, and cleaning up the Japanese garden.

Did you know that Reveille's gardens are historical? The gardens date back to the early eighteenth century when the gardens were laid out in the manner of that period's English gardens. Many of the large boxwoods are original.

If you are interested in joining our garden group, please come to Reveille on Monday mornings. We work from about 9:30 to 11:30 am. Fellowship, tea, peanut butter crackers and cookies are always a part of the day.

Swansboro Neighborhood Clean-Up Day a Success

When Reveille was asked to help with the Swansboro Clean-Up day on May 18, I had visions of hauling sodden sofas and rusty fridges. I was right, but the day turned out to be so much more. The Clean-Up had several parts, including a major spring weeding and mulching project in the Swansboro Elementary School garden.

Amy Phelps, Jonathan Davis, Anne and Bolling Poarch, Gail Bosta, Bo Bowden, Katie B. Anthony and Sheelagh Davis showed up on a rainy Saturday morning to help 5th District Councilman Parker Agelasto, his assistant, Ida Jones, members of Swansboro Baptist Church, and others from the neighborhood. Between them they filled a Richmond City trash truck, picked up a lot of litter on Rte. 60, pruned overhanging branches and labored in the school garden.

Two strong guys from the Civic Association, as well as two Reveille folks, shifted almost a ton of mulch into the weeded garden beds under the direction of Master Gardener, Nan Sweet. She organized 10 lively children and nine adults, including school faculty, in transforming the garden from its winter neglect to a well-ordered beautiful space.

There was hard work, fun and a community spirit that was great to be part of, as well as a sense of achievement. We will literally build on this community spirit this summer when the Habitat home is built. To sign up for this go to http://www.reveilleumc.org/reveille-habitat-house or contact Abby Baker and Heather MacIver at [email protected].

What Can I Say About SUPERSTAR?

WOW!  I've struggled for other words, but "WOW" is the one to which I always return. I have been attending the youth choir's weekly Jesus Christ Superstar rehearsals. This rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber is an ambitious undertaking. In the beginning, I wondered how our kids could pull it off -- but I wonder no more. WOW! These teens are ambitious, talented, passionate, and filled with the faith that their Reveille family has helped nurture. I can only try to imagine what a band, costumes and scenery will add. WOW, again!

You will soon have the chance to experience this yourself. Plan to attend one of the 7:30 pm performances on July 12, 13, 14, 16 or 18. Admission is free (but donations to our Swansboro ministry will be gratefully accepted).  Come, bring family and friends, and prepare to be WOWED!

Reveille's Co-ed Softball Season Begins

Reveille's Coed Softball Team swung into action on June 11 against The Treatment. Both games were close. In the first game, Reveille took an early 2-0 lead as Patsy Buelow walked in the first inning and Kevin Young followed with a two run homer. Despite a shoe-string catch in center field by Martha Hodges and stellar pitching by Dave Craven, The Treatment responded with 10 runs to win 10-4.

In the second game, the Treatment jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but Reveille made it interesting in the last inning. Kevin Young homered again. Patsy Buelow, Tara Smith, Boyd Bullock and Blair Bolton provided key hits as Reveille scored four runs to close the gap.  Unfortunately, the rally fell short. Reveille could not muster any more runs and lost 10-8.

Catch the team in action on June 25, at 6:30 pm, at Byrd Middle School on Quioccasin Road. If you are interested in playing, please contact Martha Hodges at [email protected].
