Volunteer for Field Day or Bake Muffins

As we continue with our Reveille Summer of Service, here are two ways to be involved with Swansboro Elementary:

On Tuesday, June 11, the school is holding their annual end of the year field day (rain date is Wednesday, June 12). Volunteers, including older children, are needed for shifts from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm and 3:00 - 5:00 pm for a kickball tournament that afternoon. Your help is needed, even if you are able to come for just an hour.

On Wednesday, June 12, the school is hosting their annual Muffins with Moms program. Typically, more than 100 participants enjoy this event, where they meet with school officials to discuss the school's programs and ideas for the future. Bakers are needed to provide muffins for the program. Muffins, labeled SWANSBORO, may be dropped off June 10 and 11 in the church parlor kitchen.

If you are interested in either opportunity, contact Laura Holdych at lholdych@yahoo.com.

Summer Choir begins June 9!

Do you enjoy singing but do not have time for weekly rehearsals? Are you between the ages of 5 to 105? Then Summer Choir is for YOU! Summer Choir begins Sunday, June 9; please come to the choir room at 10:30 am, learn the anthem and sing from the choir loft - it is that easy. There have been as many as twenty-five in Summer Choir at one time, so please join us for good quality, yet easy to learn anthems. No robes, no weekly rehearsals, but plenty of Spirit (and donuts!) See you Sunday.

Offering for Annual Conference Missions

June 9 and 16

The Virginia Annual Conference will convene on June 21 in Hampton.  Each year Reveille participates in the Annual Conference offering for our missions.  This year the focus is on children in Brazil, Mozambique, Cambodia, and here at home with projects like The Henry Fork Center and All God's Children. The Conference goal is $200,000.  You may contribute on June 9 or 16 by marking Annual Conference Offering on the memo line of your check.  There will be additional information in the bulletin.

Samaritan Fund Drive Continues through June 16

Gifts to the Samaritan Fund, which are received from Mother's Day, May 12, through Father's Day, June 16, provide financial assistance for residents of the Virginia United Methodist Homes (such as The Hermitage and Cedarfield) who have outlived their monetary resources. No Samaritan funds are used for operational, capital or administrative costs. Your gifts are entirely for the residents' care.

Samaritan Fund offering envelopes are available in the narthex, the chapel, and at the pick-up table at The Point. There are also special envelopes for this offering in the dated envelope packet members receive at home. Please make your check payable to Reveille UMC and reference it Samaritan Fund

A Way to Help Recent Tornado Victims

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) is collecting funds to help families in the U.S. affected by tornadoes, most recently in Oklahoma. If you would like to make a contribution, please make your check payable to Reveille UMC and reference the check Tornadoes 2013. One hundred percent of your donation will go to this cause; no funds will be used for administrative purposes. Your check may be put in the offering plate on Sunday or sent to the church office.

Weekly Family "Play and Pray" begins June 19

Wednesdays at 10:00 am, June 19 - August 28

Reveille Playground and Picnic Shelter

Summer is fun, but sometimes we can miss the discipline and fellowship that school days provide for our children and ourselves! So invite your friends and bring your children of all ages starting Wednesday, June 19 for a weekly time of fellowship, playtime, snacks, kid's activities, and adult and kid's devotional based on the lectionary and GPS. Church doors will be unlocked for necessary bathroom breaks, but all activities will take place in the picnic shelter, rain or shine.

Jesus Christ Superstar: Coming to Reveille!

In five weeks Andrew Lloyd Weber's Jesus Christ Superstar will be presented at Reveille by our Youth Choir, congregation and community! You will have five opportunities to experience this beloved Rock Opera depicting the last week of Christ's life on earth, known as The Passion, on July 12, 13, 14, 16 and 18. All performances begin at 7:30 pm. While admission is free, you may wish to leave a donation, with all net proceeds going to the Swansboro ministry. Youth Choir members will begin handing out tickets after worship services on June 9. If you know someone who would be inspired by this experience, please take a ticket for them as well. We have 4,000 seats to fill, and that means 4,000 opportunities to share the Passion of Christ!

Congratulations to the High School Class of 2013

Many received the waters of baptism in Reveille's chancel, while others came as high school students. In each case, this year's high school graduates have shared their many gifts. They have served in worship as acolytes, crucifers and choir members. They have served on local missions and have traveled as far as Honduras and El Salvador. They have sung, read, and prayed. They attended day camp, Vacation Bible School, Sunday school and youth group. These youth have shared much of their lives with us, and now we see them move into a new phase of their lives, going with God's blessing and Reveille's prayers.

Praising the Prom

On May 18, Reveille hosted a prom for 71 day and residential students from UMFS Prom 1 (United Methodist Family Services). A team of youth and adults helped recreate a full prom experience for these students, who have faced many challenges in their short lives, so they felt loved and included. Apparently one of Reveille's youth said at the dance that night, "This is just like my prom." That was exactly the reaction we wanted. Thanks to Pat Gladin, Ginny Dunn, Marian Baxter Felton, Mary Simmons, and Jean Donaldson for their help organizing the youth, arranging dresses and tuxedos, securing the decorations, and spending countless hours. Each student received a boutonniere or corsage, and found on the floor a Hollywood-style walk of fame, with a star bearing each of their names. One of the youth on the team, Hannah Thompson, shares her reflection on the event (please see below).

-  Dwayne Stinson, Director of Youth Ministries

Ever since I entered high school I've been dreaming about my prom, so when I heard that the youth group would have the chance to help that dream come true Prom 3 for the students at UMFS I just couldn't resist. We woke up bright and early on the day of the prom and began turning the youth center into a starry night. This makeover included many gold and silver stars, banners, Christmas lights, a disco ball, and some expertly blown balloons. In the welcome center we created gorgeous table displays for the supper we were having, centerpieces decked out with star shaped balloons, mirrors, and tea lights. With the major contributions by Pat Gladin and her hard working crew as well as some spectacular youth we made it into a night to remember.

As the students showed up you could visibly see the excitement on their faces; they were glowing. We served them a delicious, family-style dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, rolls, and cake. After dinner we headed to the "starry night" youth center for the main event. There was dancing, foosball, snacks, and most importantly, lots of kids having the time of their lives. It was absolutely amazing participating in this ministry, seeing just how much they all enjoyed it, and making their dreams of an awesome prom come true.

Thanks for Your Support!

Thanks to everyone who attended or supported the concert hosted by Elizabeth Bell on May 17 to benefit Dancing Classrooms at Swansboro Elementary School. To date she has raised $3,831 for Dancing Classrooms - enough to continue the program for next year's fifth grade class, and some for the following year as well. Thanks to everyone who made this possible for these students!
