Prepare for worship each week with the Galatians Bible Study, GPS, and new family GPS

Preparing for worship each week has never been easier.  Prepare for this summer's sermon series: "What is the Gospel, Really?" (June 2-July 7) by following the Galatians portion of Interpretation Bible Studies: Philippians and Galatians, available in the welcome center, following the GPS, and picking up a copy of the new family GPS, filled with daily activities for the entire family aimed at helping children of all ages understand the sermon, look forward to worship each week, and encourage daily discipleship.  The GPS and family GPS are available each week in worship, in the welcome center, and online.

Reveille Coed Softball Season Begins on June 4

For those of you looking for summer fun, some exercise or an opportunity to have fellowship with other Reveille members, please join our coed softball team. The team is open to all members and frequent visitors who are 18 and older. We play on Tuesday evenings at Byrd Middle School or Moody Middle School at 6:30 pm or 8:15 pm. Our games are always finished by 10:00 pm.

We play in a slow-pitch league with 10 people on the field. There must be an even split of five men and five women on the field. New players are always welcome to join us, and we would love to have college students who are home for the summer. No skills are necessary, but it is helpful to have your own glove. The most important requirement is the desire to have fun and meet some other Reveille members. If you are interested in playing, please contact Martha Hodges by e-mail, martha.b.hodges@verizon.net, or call 359-6041, ext. 115.

Whether you want to play or cheer on our team, please watch for the game schedule in a later issue of The Reveille Window.

Tee-ology Reflection - "No Sandbagging!"

By Bo Bowden

In the book, Tee-ology, there are 18 lessons drawn from parallels between Christianity and the game of golf. Our tee-ology small group has enjoyed reading at our own pace and the fellowship of spending a few hours together outside this spring. To give you some idea of how seriously we take the golf aspect of these outings, this week after a wayward drive from a member of our group (trust me, it could have been any one of us), Dave Craven wondered aloud whether we should not rename our sessions tree-ology!

On that day we played at Belmont Golf Course, which is the only course in Virginia to have hosted one of golf's major championships. Sam Snead, the famous pro from Bath County, Virginia who still holds the record for most PGA tour victories of 82, won that major championship at Belmont.

In pursuit of Sam Snead's record for total victories is Tiger Woods, who added career PGA tour victory number 78 by winning the Tournament Players' Championship in May. This particular victory was not without some controversy. Tiger was accused of unsportsmanlike conduct by Sergio Garcia, and some television viewers believe Tiger may have benefitted from an illegal drop down the stretch on Sunday. Whether either action benefitted Tiger on his way to victory, golf enthusiasts suggest, is not the issue. The honor of the game must be upheld.

Sam Snead played on the PGA tour for nearly four decades and was known to be an honorable competitor. He once forfeited competing in a playoff over the possibility that he had broken a rule earlier in the tournament. Still, even he could not escape scrutiny when he claimed to have thrown a match in 1959 on the final two holes because he had discovered he had one too many clubs in his bag. Instead of calling the penalty on himself and forfeiting immediately, he played out the final two holes and made sure to lose by hitting errant shots and missing putts. Though the final outcome was the same, representatives from the PGA reviewed the case because the honor of the game had been violated by his actions. Snead said he knew that the game was being filmed for TV and did not want to ruin the show.

As Christians we are called to honor God by seeking His grace even as we struggle with our own imperfections. Because we often fall short of perfection, we grant ourselves an exemption by justifying our actions. In the book Tee-ology, John Freeman calls this "sandbagging," and examples may include failing to do what we know we should, or doing what we know we should not. At first, we may allow ourselves a foot wedge, or a mulligan or fudging a number on the scorecard. Do not worry, no one is watching, we might say.

Some of us may find it easier to follow all the rules when there is nothing we value at stake.  But up the ante and what happens? Isn't it harder to follow all the rules when they seem to prevent us from getting something we really want? Did Tiger's quest for another victory allow him to more easily accept a possible advantage? Did Sam Snead's knowing a TV sponsorship might be at risk justify his bending the rules a bit?

In order to accept God's grace and therefore honor Him, we must remain aware of those times in our own lives when we are most likely to bend the rules in our favor. Our charge is not to continue to engage in such behaviors and later ask for forgiveness, but to rely on God's grace to help us trust that His way is the right one. Paul writes in Romans 6:1-2 "...should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means!"

I'm appreciative of the opportunity to participate in Tee-ology as a reminder that as long as we play the game fairly, God's grace provides the joy of community in His presence no matter how well or poorly we might play.
