Help Clean Up Swansboro on May 18

On Saturday May 18, from 9:00 am-12:00 pm, bring your muscles and a willing spirit for a three hour cleanup of the Swansboro area. Reveille members will join together with local residents to help clean up the neighborhood. City trash trucks will help the working teams to pick up large and small items. If you would prefer to work in the Swansboro Elementary School Community garden, master gardener, Nan Sweet welcomes you.

We will meet at the Swansboro Baptist Church (3801 Midlothian Turnpike) at 8:45 am. Please wear old clothes and bring strong gloves, water and a snack.

This would be a great father/ older son opportunity. To sign up, go to the Summer of Service registration here. For questions, email Sheelagh Davis.

TopThe Vow We Make

by Dwayne Stinson

Prayers - are you praying regularly for Reveille's members, even those you do not know, and for Reveille's ministries?

Presence - do you attend worship each week, even if you are away from home? Further, do you participate in discipleship opportunities in addition to worship?

Gifts - do you share your talents for teaching, for music, for leadership, for prayer, or the many other gifts you have with Reveille? Do you tithe from your income?

Service - do you seek opportunities to serve others both inside and outside of Reveille's congregation?

Witness - do you share your faith openly with those you encounter at school or work?

Confirmation Five commitments, one vow - the vow each member takes when becoming a full member of Reveille's congregation. This Sunday, May 19 at the 11:00 service, 21 teens will make that vow for the first time. They will become full members of our congregation, having professed their faith for themselves. These youth will have the same rights and responsibilities of any adult member of this congregation.

Please pray for our confirmands, that they will accept God's help in fulfilling their commitment. Furthermore, if you are a member of Reveille already, please use this service as a reminder to recommit yourself to your membership vow. The members of the class are

Kelly Baxter, Caroline Bell, Molly Black, John Bullock, Bailey Butler, Sid Caravati, Anna Lyle Collett, Oliver Creasey, Liddy Custer, Mariah Diederich, Caroline Ennis, Hannah Epps, Jackson Fuller, Dameon Hite, Mary Kern, Abigail Killius, Adair Logue, Meredith Neurohr, Kate Oelkers, Libby O'Neill, and Matt Salmon.

Mission Benefit Concert: Not Just Another Song!

by Cathy Armistead

Are you a fan of late Renaissance poetry? George Herbert (1593-1633) was one of  the greatest British poets of his day, and composer Ralph Vaughn Williams set five Mission Benefit Concert of his famous poems to music. This masterwork, entitled Five Mystical Songs, was composed by Vaughn Williams in 1911 for baritone, chorus and orchestra. You will hear our own Craig Smith and Ken Krause as soloists, accompanied by the chancel choirs of Reveille and Shady Grove United Methodist Churches, and Dr. Charles Staples, of Trinity United Methodist Church at the keys of our Steinway concert grand piano.

The Mission Benefit Concert, held on Sunday, May 19 at 7:00 pm in our sanctuary, will begin with selections by our Reveille Ringers, followed by combined choirs singing Messiah: Part III, by George Frederic Handel, with solos by Cynthia Lee, from Shady Grove, and by Robert Phanord, II, Carrie Armistead, Reginald Potts, IV and Kara Wiseman, from Reveille. Immediately following the concert, please join the musicians in the fellowship hall for a catered reception. Childcare is available.

The beneficiary of the 2013 Mission Benefit Concert is the Swansboro ministry; you may make your donation at the concert. Thank you for supporting Reveille's Music Ministry and the Swansboro ministry! For more information, please contact the church office at 804-359-6041.

Pick up your books for this summer's sermon series:

"What is the Gospel, Really?"

The word "Gospel" is thrown around a lot, but do we know what it really is?

Beginning Sunday, June 2, all three worship services will use Paul's letter to the Galatians to explore this question in a six-week sermon series.

Pick up your copy of Interpretation Bible Studies: Philippians and Galatians, available in the Welcome Center beginning Sunday, May 26 for a suggested donation of $10. Join us in one of the following ways we can come together to help the Gospel form us, guide us, and lead us to truly commit to a Summer of Service as followers of Christ:

  • Each Wednesday from May 29 through July 3, join Jim Noland in the chapel at 11:30 am before the 12:15 pm communion service for a small group study of this book, beginning with Unit 5 on page 41.
  • Pick up a few books and create your own small group of friends, Sunday school classmates, or neighbors to do the study together. This is a great way to reconnect during the summer!
  • Follow the study individually, and be sure to catch up on any sermons you miss due to summer travels by visiting the website at http://reveilleumc.org/weekly-messages.

If you have any questions or need help forming a small group, please contact Jennifer McCluskey at adult@reveilleumc.org or call 359-6041, ext. 121.

Help Feed The Homeless A Hot Meal

On Thursday, May 23, Reveille members will serve a hot meal to some of Richmond's homeless population. We need your help in the following ways.

  • Friends of the Homeless Provide one of the 10 potato casseroles. The recipe, with drop-off instructions, is available on the sign-up board in the welcome center. Making a casserole is a great way for full time employees to make a difference in serving the marginalized folks in our community.
  • Serve at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Meet at Reveille at 11:00 am to carpool or go to the site directly at noon. If needed, child care is available while serving the meal. Please email Lori Epps by May 16.
  • Donate the following much needed items: gallon size baggies, 55 gallon trash bags. There will be a collection area by the elevators.
  • Make a homemade dessert. Sign up on the FOH board to volunteer to provide desserts.

For questions or more information, contact Mary Jane Walls at marywalls50@gmail.com.

Swansboro Service Opportunities

By Dwayne Stinson

The summer of service, when opportunities to serve others range from Rebuilding Together, successfully completed in April, to the final coat of paint on the Habitat home Reveille is sponsoring. In between are CARITAS, Day Camp and the youth week in Swansboro.

July 14-19, 82 youth will serve in and around the Swansboro Community. They will build wheelchair ramps, perform small home repair, provide support for recreational activities for elementary students, and work on the Habitat home. One goal for the summer of service is to create more opportunities for youth and adults to serve together. The week will require work site leaders, who may serve a day or two at a time, and adults to chaperone the entire week (Sunday night through Friday). Any adults interested in serving, even for one or two days, should contact Dwayne at youth@reveilleumc.org or 359-6041, ext. 122  with their interests and available dates.

If you cannot spend the night but would like to serve a meal or provide other support, watch in upcoming editions of The Window for opportunities to provide behind-the-scenes service.

A Tee-ology Reflection

By Stephen Coleman

For the past four weeks, a group of Reveille members have met on Friday morning to play golf.  Great shots have happened like Bo Bowden's chip in for birdie at the Crossings golf course and Dave Craven's long putt for birdie on the 18th hole at Providence Golf Club.  Triple bogeys and worse have also been written on the scorecard such as what happened to me while playing at Providence.

I was playing a par 5 and with two good shots, I had an opportunity to chip on the green with the hopes of getting close to the pin for a birdie putt. Unfortunately, after two poor chip shots and four putts, I walked away with a triple bogey. As I voiced my frustration to Brant Smith as we rode to the next hole, he responded, "Remember where you are and where you are not." I also was reminded about the Bible passage, "Be angry but do not sin." With these thoughts in mind, I decided not to break my putter over my knee or shout out profanities that were at the tip of my tongue. Instead, I took some deep breaths and gazed at the beauty of God's creation. We cannot always control what happens in life but we can control our reactions to what happens in life. As we continue to play golf and read our Tee-ology devotional book, stay tuned for more reflections.

Three Questions You May Have about CARITAS

From July 20-27, Reveille will be hosting up to 40 adult men from CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter). For some of us, this job may seem intimidating. Here are the answers to five frequently asked questions that can help us all prepare our church, and our hearts, to respond to Christ's command to feed the poor and heal the sick (in mind, body, and spirit):

I want to help, but I am not an extrovert. Can I do this?

Yes! Remember that not all of the guests are extroverts, either, so you are not expected

to be anyone other than yourself. Starting up a conversation with a guest is remarkably easy- it usually takes asking them one question. "Where are you from?" or "Tell me about your day" are good examples.

Can our children help?

Children can be great volunteers in many ways. They can help serve the guests at

dinner. Children can interact and play card games and chess with the adult guests.

When children are around adult guests tend to put their personal frustrations aside

and put their best selves forward for the sake of the children.

What if a situation arises with a guest that I don't know how to handle?

Whenever guests are at your facility, there will be at least one CARITAS staff

member present who is trained to handle problems that arise. If you have any

questions or observe any problem with a guest, we ask that you go immediately to

the staff member and let them handle the situation.

Next week's Window will feature 10 things you may not know about CARITAS. If you are interested in volunteering this summer, please contact Gretchen Biernot at gwbiernot@hanovercounty.gov.
