TopEaster Privilege, Easter Joy

Although it is sometimes misunderstood, Easter is truly the heart and soul of our Christian faith. Easter is not about the springtime renewal of the earth, as lovely as this may be. And Easter is certainly not about bunnies and colored eggs, though they may provide fun for children. Easter celebrates the fact that God raised the crucified Jesus to new life. Easter means that death is not final because we are invited to share in Christ's victory over the grave. And Easter validates the ministry of Christ as the path that leads to God. Easter is cause for joy and celebration. Come and worship.

on April 27

On April 27, Reveille will once again participate in Rebuilding Together, where we will be involved in the re-modeling of two houses. The houses will be in the Fulton Hill neighborhood Tools and our tasks will include removing clutter, painting inside and out, installing vapor barriers in a crawl space, replacing a bathroom floor, rebuilding railing and steps on the back porch and many other things. As we help rebuild these houses, we are supporting a 77-year old who still works three days a week in a retirement home helping Alzheimer's patients and a couple in their 60's in which the husband is unable to work after having a stroke.

The co-champions for this ministry are Tim Johnson, Steven Roberts and RC Hall. We need at least 60 volunteers to make this ministry successful. You do not have to have any special skills. To volunteer, sign up here. If you have questions, please email RC Hall or call Reverend Katie B. Anthony at 359-6041, ext. 111. Additional information will be sent to volunteers in the next few weeks.

Easter Egg Hunt and Mission Celebration

Children and families gathered at Reveille on Saturday, March 23 for our annual Easter egg hunt. Although it was a bit chilly, that didn't stop the excitement the Easter Egg Hunt 2013 children had as they anticipated the egg and scavenger hunts that were upon us. Children were dressed in their Easter outfits and ready to have a good time.

This year we began our time together working on three mission projects. The families were encouraged to decorate lunch bags for Friends of the Homeless, make a daffodil centerpiece for the UMFS potluck dinner, as well as decorate cookies for the UMFS dinner. It was great to see families working together on these outreach projects. Through the simple gift of spending 20-30 minutes of time on these projects, many people will know the love of Jesus Christ.

The children were treated to a story time about the true meaning of Easter Sunday as Lori Epps, Director of Children's Ministry, read "God Gave Us Easter," by Lisa Bergren. Then the younger children through first grade gleefully ventured off to the lawn and church garden to find all of the Easter eggs that were hidden. The second through fifth graders were challenged to a scavenger hunt that related clues to the Resurrection Eggs. The children were able to turn in their eggs and scavenger hunt coins for Easter treats.

Family and friends of Reveille then joined in a time of refreshments and fellowship to end our time together. It was a joyous event that reflected Jesus' love for each of us. A big thank you to our youth - Katie Cantone, Abby Watson, Anna Fowler, Lizzie Graumlich, Dameon Hite, Taylor Kent, Bentley Logue, Doug Thompson, Olivia Vivadelli, Harvey Creasey, Richard Schweiker, and Claire Schweiker - who helped with hiding eggs and the scavenger hunt set-up, as well as clean-up, to our Easter egg hunt team of adults - Amy Donald, Tara Bennett, Morgan Herr, Kelly Weaver, Patsy Buelow, Allison Bridges, and Susan Paullin - who helped with set-up, buying of supplies, and clean-up, and to all the families who came and participated in the event. We are looking forward to our next Easter egg hunt and mission celebration in 2014!

Journey to Jerusalem Reflection

The children began their Journey with waving palm branches to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem. The children learned about Jesus riding into the city on a donkey and how excited the people were to welcome their king. Ellie, Peyton, and Jake Noland all enjoyed waving their palm branches during our worship time.

The first week's Bible verse that the participants learned was, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Mark 11:9). Each week the children learned a Bible verse related to our journey. They each got the chance to earn footprint stamps for each Bible verse they could recite. Peter Donald couldn't make it one week to the class, but he was so excited about sharing the Bible verse that he learned that he had his mom video tape it and share it with Lori Epps via the I-pad.

On week 2, the children focused on Jesus washing his disciple's feet. The key verse that went along with this part of the journey was found in John, chapter 13, verse 15.  It says, "I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you."  We had hand motions to remind us how this verse goes. Bolling and Henry Poarch enjoyed our hand washing game that reminded us about washing the disciples' feet.

On week 3 we were snowed out, but we regrouped and continued on our journey the next Wednesday.

On week 4 we heard the story about The Last Supper, Jesus praying in the garden, and Peter's denial of Jesus three times. Hailey Epps and Courtney Klich enjoyed our time around the communion table where we talked about The Last Supper and then shared in some snacks of gold fishes and juice together. We all gathered around a low table and sat on the floor together. The class made communion cups and plates with our memory verses on it for the week.  We recited our verses together.  "Do this in memory of me" (Luke 22:19) and "The Lord is near to all who call on him" (Psalm 145:18). Luke Weaver spoke up joyfully to the group after Lori read the Bible verse about The Last Supper and said, "What we are doing is just like what Jesus did with his disciples!" Grayson Buelow loved making the rooster crowing sound when we talked about Peter denying Jesus three times. We finished our night together by making friendship bread mix to remind us of The Last Supper and communion.

Our last week together on the journey, we focused on Jesus' death and resurrection. We celebrated together the joy of Easter morning by making beaded cross necklaces. Lauren and Caroline Donald creatively made their cross necklaces to symbolize that Jesus died on the cross for us all. At the end of class all the children counted up their footprints and eagerly turned them in for prizes.

Journey to Jerusalem helped our children really connect with the last week of Jesus' life and they were all eager to learn each week's Bible verse. Amy Donald and Lori were very impressed with the knowledge of the children who participated. "The Sunday school teachers have been doing such a good job teaching our children about the Bible, as well as their parents," said Amy Donald.

Thank you to Amy Donald who assisted Lori Epps with this ministry. We hope you will mark your calendar to join us next year on our Journey to Jerusalem during the Lenten season.

Reflection on Connecting with God and Neighbor

I had the chance to attend the UMFS dinner on March 25 in the welcome center.  I didn't know what to expect. My mom told me that we were hosting a dinner to bring youth from the UMFS to our church to have a time of fellowship and a meal together. She had asked me to help sit at the children's table and to help entertain them while their parents ate a meal with the youth from UMFS.

When the youth arrived, they were very excited. They all came in and sat with our congregation members at various tables. Pastor Katie and Pastor Stephen helped greet them and then we played several rounds of bingo together. Everyone loved this. Katie was calling out the letter and numbers, but she would say, "B" and then try to come up with something that started with a "B" that was from the Bible. Katie would say, "Bethlehem 3".  The youth from UMFS started helping out by shouting out Bible words that started with each Bingo letter. There was laughter and excitement as the youth got closer to winning Bingo. I forgot to tell you that the prize that Katie mentioned was getting to go first in line to the potluck dinner. We celebrated many winners and the tables that had Bingo winners all stood in line together as they got their dinner.

Conversations were taking place and there was a lot of connecting going on. After dinner, the youth got to travel to our sanctuary to hear the Reveille Ringers practice. This was a neat experience for the youth to be in such a large worship space and for some of them to hear bells being played for the very first time.

I am glad I got the opportunity to attend the UMFS dinner. Being in relationships is what Jesus modeled for us. He wants us to connect with our brothers and sisters of all ages. I am proud of my Reveille family, who is committed to helping those in need this Lent and throughout the year. Will you join me?

-Hannah Epps, 8th grade youth

Have you taken the 2013 Lenten Challenge to "Connect with God" through spiritual disciples and "Connect with Neighbor" through time and prayers? What was your experience? What impact has it had on your faith? Reveille staff will be sharing their experiences through The Window over the next few months and they invite you to join them. Submit your reflection to Katie B. Anthony. For more information on the 2013 Lenten Challenge, see the purple "Path to Serve" brochure found in the welcome center or narthex.
