TopJoin us at 10:30 am Sunday in the Welcome Center for our Second Fellowship Challenge!

During Lent, Reveille is challenging the congregation to "Connect with Neighbor" by getting to know our neighbors within our congregation and throughout our community. The church will be hosting "Fellowship Challenges" for the next five Sundays to help you get to know neighbors within the congregation.

Fellowship Challenge This past Sunday, Reveille members of all ages met in the welcome center at 10:30 am to participate in the first Lenten Fellowship Challenge. In the first Fellowship Challenge, members played "Reveille Bingo," a game requiring each player to get signatures from anyone matching specific descriptions written on their bingo card. Descriptions included: "Member of Discovery Class," "Has spent the night at Reveille," and "Member for less than a year." Anyone completing the challenge put one cotton ball in a vase that will displayed throughout Lent and will serve as a way to track our progress! We will celebrate together on Easter Sunday the relationship built with one another.

We invite everyone to come back to the welcome center this Sunday morning from 10:30-10:55 am for another game. This Sunday's fellowship challenge will relate to the Friends of the Homeless Bag Lunch outreach ministry. We hope you will join this opportunity to get to know one another better.

Church Potlucks with UMFS Students

All are invited to join the students of United Methodist Family Services (UMFS) for two potlucks this Lent, February 25 and March 25. The attendees of The Point are taking Reveille's Lenten challenge to "Connect with Neighbors." They invite you to join them by getting to know the 32 residents of UMFS over a potluck meal.

The first potluck will be Monday, February 25 at 6:00 pm in the welcome center followed by a short demonstration from the bell choir in the sanctuary. Children and adults alike are welcome to join the fun. Please note that children will be asked to sit at the "kids table."

The second potluck will be Monday, March 25 at 6:00 pm in the UMFS Auditorium (3900 West Broad Street). Only adults are invited to attend.

If you would like to join The Point in taking up the challenge to "Connect with Neighbors," sign up online to bring your favorite side-dish or dessert. If you have questions or would like to help with set-up and/or clean-up, email Katie B. Anthony or call (804) 359-6041, ext. 111.

CARITAS Opportunities:

Helpers and a Co-Champion are needed for CARITAS Hosting Week: April 6-13th

Sign up for an opportunity to live out Christ's mission to serve those most in need...coming right to our own church! Reveille will be hosting CARITAS Families in the youth center from Saturday, April 6th to Saturday, April 13, 2013. We need volunteers to cook dinners and breakfasts, provide evening activities for adults and children, and serve as overnight hosts. Please come by the bulletin board located closest to the exterior doors on the "red carpet" leading to the sanctuary and sign up!

In additions to helpers, the CARITAS ministry needs a co-champion to help Gretchen Biernot coordinate the hosting of CARITAS Families. Much of the work has already been done, but someone is needed to help support and coordinate the logistics of hosting, feeding, and nurturing this special group of families. For questions, email Jennifer McCluskey or call 359-6041, ext. 121.

February Friends of the Homeless Hot Meal

It's that time again - the fourth Thursday of the month. On Thursday, February 28, Reveille members will serve a hot meal of roasted chicken, cheesy potato casserole, green beans and dessert to some of Richmond's homeless population. There are several ways in which you can help.

  • Make potato casseroles: The recipe, with drop-off instructions, can be picked up from the sign-up board in the new welcome center.
  • Serve: Six servers are needed at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. You can meet us at Reveille at 11:00 am and carpool or meet us at the site. For child care while serving the meal email Lori Epps one week prior or call 359-6041.
  • "Connect with Neighbor": NEW THIS MONTH!!! We are inviting you to come eat and share time WITH those we serve on February 28. If you are interested, please contact Kay Craven or sign up on the board in the welcome center.
  • Donate: Friends of the Homeless is ALWAYS in need of the following items: gallon size baggies, plastic Tupperware-like containers (used containers are fine) and 55 gallon trash bags If you would like to donate any of these items, there will be a collection area by the elevators (on the red carpet).

Please look for the sign-up sheet in the new welcome center area! For more information email Kay Craven.

UMW NEWS

Susanna Wesley Circle Makes Chocolates

for YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter

SW Circle photo 2 On Tuesday, February 12, the Susanna Wesley Circle (SWC) of Reveille United Methodist Women (UMW) met in the home of Laura Holdych for its circle meeting entitled "For Love and Chocolate." Members learned to make chocolate-dipped pretzels, cherries, and strawberries (and chocolate topiaries!) to give to their own families as well as those living in the YWCA domestic violence program.

The circle was honored by the presence of Leigh Busby, YWCA Development and Outreach Manager, and Linda Tissiere, CEO of the YWCA, who joined in the fun and were on hand to answer questions about the program and shelter.

This shelter has been one of the main service projects supported by the SWC for many years, and it was such a joy to combine a love for family and neighbor while enjoying delicious food and empowering fellowship! Many thanks to Laura Holdych for organizing and hosting this event.

UMW General Meeting Tuesday, March 5, 10:30 am

The General Meeting for The United Methodist Women is Tuesday, March 5, at 10:30 am in the fellowship hall.

Our guest speak is Lisa Schaffner, former news anchor for WRIC-TV8 Richmond and Public Relations and Marketing Director for UNOS - United Network for Organ Sharing. Lisa will speak about this national non-profit based in Richmond that matches life-saving organs from deceased donors to those on the national waiting list.

Lunch will follow at 12:00 pm with a cost of $8. Please make reservations by Wednesday, February 27 by emailing Alva Haley or calling 474-1981. If you need child care, please email Jennifer McCluskey or call 359-6041, ext. 121 by February 27.

Ultimate Lenten Experience

You may walk with Christ during the last week of His life on earth: be a part of those who sang "Hosanna"; get to know the Disciples who loved Him but left Him; what went on in the Temple that upset Christ so; how did Mary feel; how could one of Christ's best friends have betrayed him and set Him up for death; what did Christ say to God in Gethsemane...this and so much more is explored in Andrew Lloyd Weber's Jesus Christ Superstar. You have the opportunity to be on the inside of one of the most life-altering events in the history of the world...don't let it pass. Be a part of the Chorus (the crowd), a major player in this, our heritage as Christians.

Rehearsals are Sundays, 5:00-5:30 pm or 6:30-7:00 pm, in the choir room; email Cathy Armistead  or call 359-6041. Make this part of your Lenten journey.

Caring for Our New Space

Our youth have appreciated so much the new space we are now able to enjoy. Our youth group attendance is stronger than ever. Sunday school attendance seems to be growing. We have space to host youth groups from other churches; showers to offer our CARITAS guests; rooms for studies and space for recreation.

Of course we also want to make sure we care for the space we have. Our equipment is expensive, food is costly and we have particular set-ups in the space to facilitate youth ministry events. Your help is welcome in ensuring that we can have this space for generations to come.

With that in mind, please note that the space is built with 6-12th graders in mind. It is not ideal for children under that age. No child (5th grade and under) should ever be in the youth center without a parent. This is particularly true on Sunday mornings.

The kitchenette and storage areas in the youth center are designated for youth ministry. Please check with the youth director before you use any items or before you store items in the youth space. Any use of the youth center must receive the youth director's approval before moving forward. In this way we can ensure that the youth have access to their space first and foremost, but we can still enable other groups to use it as it is available.

Thank you for your generosity in providing this amazing space. Your help will guarantee that when our current nursery children reach 6th grade, it will still be available and equipped for them. Dwayne Stinson, the youth director, can be reached at youth@reveilleumc.org or 359-6041, ext. 122.

Youth News

Sometimes life seems to drain us. There is always one more thing we have to do, one more person demanding our attention, one more responsibility still to finish. Yet the Christian life is not about feeling empty, but about being so full of God's love that we overflow with it. This Lent, the youth group will learn how our relationship with God can overflow to give us all the energy, love, and gifts we need to care for others. This Sunday night, February 24, we will focus on what it means to live a life that overflows.

The schedule for the evening is as follows:

4:30 pm - Combined choir

5:30 pm - Dinner ($3)

6:00 pm - Combined youth group

Middle school youth: Take another step on your journey of faith. Journey is a middle school retreat sponsored by the Jeremiah Project. The dates are March 22-24, and the cost is $125.00. This year's theme is "WILD: Living an Untamed Life for Christ." The weekend includes speaker Scott Rubin (who is coming back from last year), band, The Beautiful Refrain, workshops, and lots of time to enjoy the Rockbridge young life camp. To register, please get a check made out to "Reveille UMC" to Dwayne by February 24. After that date, the cost increases to $130.00.

Swansboro 2013: be there. This summer our mission experience is local, but not normal. We will work with Habitat for Humanity, build wheelchair ramps, do home repair, sponsor sports and music camps for children, and otherwise immerse ourselves in the Swansboro community. We are staying off-site at Pocohontas State Park. This is a full mission experience, July 14-19. The cost for the week is $150.00. To register please get a check and a roommate request form to Dwayne by March 1.

Prom Time

Thank you for the wonderful responses so far to the requests for support for the United Methodist Family Services (UMFS) student prom. Reveille is fortunate to host the prom this May 18. Since the last article in The Window, a few items have changed.

The girls from UMFS no longer need donated dresses. However, if you have a prom dress and accessories, please feel free to bring it to Reveille. We are going to donate any dresses we receive to Cinderella Dreams, the agency UMFS will use to purchase the girls' dresses. Accessories are still welcome.

For boys, we still need tuxedos and accessories, and we will also need suits, slacks and dress shirts, along with belts, shoes and ties. The Men's Wearhouse has generously agreed to rent tuxedos to us for 50% of retail price, but any donations will reduce the total cost. A coat rack should arrive in the youth center soon to receive donations. In addition, we need a few folks who will serve on a cooking team to provide dinner for the students on the evening of the prom.

If you have questions or donations, feel free to contact Dwayne Stinson.

The Parent Link

The Parent Link is our new monthly Children's Ministry newsletter. The first part of the newsletter has information provided by Group Publishing that touches on a monthly theme, gives suggestions on how to spend more quality time together as a family, as well as shares music and movie reviews and culture trends. I am providing a monthly calendar of events and opportunities to further engage in quality time through meaningful conversation starters and prayer focuses. Also included will be highlights of Reveille's upcoming events in more detail as related to children. I hope that you will click on this month's link for our newsletter and share it with those who would benefit from it. If you would like to sign-up to receive our monthly children's newsletter via email, please email Lori Epps, Director of Children's Ministries, or call 359-6041, ext. 117.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Day Camp

This camp takes place during VBS week, July 29 - August 2 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm for current 3rd - 5th graders. This is a week filled with adventure, missions, and hands-on learning activities. We take field trips to various mission sites and engage in missions that help our community and beyond. I even have heard rumor of an overnight on Thursday for our campers. Save the date and please let Ellie Speer or Lori Epps, Director of Children's Ministries, know if you would like to help serve with our children.

Vacation Bible School

"Everywhere Fun Fair, Where God's World Comes Together"

Join us for this kid-friendly global fair, where your children will experience the love of Jesus, meet welcoming neighbors from the Bible, and explore the everyday life of neighbors from Japan, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Mexico. Kids will learn that God's love welcomes everyone, as they understand how to love and serve God and be a neighbor to the world. Reveille UMC will offer Vacation Bible School to 4 year olds through 2nd grade. Look for more information regarding on-line registration soon. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer to help serve in any capacity during VBS Week, July 29 - August 2 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm please contact Jennifer Rosen.

Kaleidoscope Music Camp

This exciting week of music takes place Monday, August 5 through Friday, August 9 at the Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center in Blackstone, Virginia. This facility use to be a Women's College back in the day. So, we get to stay in "dorm" type rooms that have their own bathrooms. This event is open to rising 3rd through 6th graders. A guest choir conducts choir practices throughout the week that culminates in a concert for families on Thursday evening. The children get to participate in various workshops each day to include: crafts, worship and scripture, indoor recreation, outdoor recreation (to include pool time), the zone (which is themed oriented), and Orff instruments. We have morning devotions each day and nightly worship with a guest pastor. It is a great camp experience. For more information about this opportunity, please email Cathy Armistead or Tamara Nicely.

Helping Hands Children's Mission Opportunity

This Virginia Conference sponsored children's mission opportunity will take place on Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19. Our home base will be Woodlake UMC in Midlothian, Virginia. We will spend two days in mission throughout the Richmond and surrounding areas. This two day opportunity engages children in rising 3rd through 6th grade in hands-on missions such as working in a food pantry, serving lunch to firefighters, picking up trash with Adopt-A-Highway program, making journals for veterans, preparing casseroles for homeless organizations, visiting at a nursing home, and working in a garden to name a few. We also participate in worship together and spend Thursday night in a fun fellowship activity that has included in the past either swimming or jumping at a local bouncy house. Registration for this event will take place soon. For more information about this event, please email Lori Epps, Director of Children's Ministries, or call 359-6041, ext. 117.

Library Under Reconstruction

Reveille Memorial Adult Library has been in existence for about 50 years, and has faithfully served our church with its wonderful selection of books and audiovisual materials. The results of a recent survey of our members suggested that the library be updated, rejuvenated, and physically renovated. A library committee has been set up to oversee suggestions and make recommendations to several professional librarians who are volunteering for this project. The committee is planning a book sale, most likely in the fall, and welcomes your donations. More information is forthcoming.

Volunteers Needed in Library

The Reveille Memorial Adult Library is seeking volunteers to give time in the library on Sunday mornings. The library needs to be staffed from 9:30-10:45 am, plus another half hour following the 11am service. We are hoping to get enough volunteers so that each person would give one Sunday every quarter. The librarian will provide directions as to how to manage the library during this time. Anyone can perform these duties and, in doing so, will become better acquainted with the library and its collection. Please e-mail Carol Ann Estes if you are interested in being a library volunteer.
