Lent Begins at Reveille with

Ash Wednesday Service

February 13, 7:00 pm

Ashes Lent is a period of 40 days, not including Sundays, when we are encouraged to engage in reflection and penitence in preparation for Easter. It is a time to reflect upon our mortality and on our need for the saving grace that comes to us in Christ Jesus. Plan to start Lent with this solemn service in the sanctuary on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Senior Pastor Dr. Jim Noland will lead the service.

A Call to Action for Friends of the Homeless Bag Lunch Ministry

I am continually impressed at the willingness of our congregation to serve and financially support our outreach ministries. We are truly blessed at Reveille UMC to have so many opportunities to be in ministry with those in our community and the world.

Friends of the Homeless Our Friends of the Homeless Bag Lunch Ministry is in danger of ending in August unless immediate action is taken. This ministry is currently underfunded and has no champions to lead and guide this program in 2013. Once again, we have just completed our annual Glorious Gifts fundraising event that supports all our outreach ministries. However, this ministry did not receive 100% support.

Friends of the Homeless Lunch Bag Ministry is a once-a-month outreach opportunity on the 4th Sunday of each month. Church members supply the items for the bag lunches as well as work with the children to pack lunches for 160 homeless people in Richmond.

If you are inspired to get involved, donate items and most importantly step forward to champion Friends of the Homeless Bag Lunch Ministry, please contact David Collett or Katie B. Anthony.

Youth News

The message is subtle, but pervasive, in nearly every song, movie, television commercial and news article. Our culture is saturated in messages about sexuality, about the use and abuse of this gift from God. At youth group on February 10, our youth will address the topic of sexuality from a Christian perspective.

Altar Decorations During Lent Explained

During the season of Lent, we will have no flowers or any other decorations displayed in the church, thus saving flowers and "new life" for Easter Sunday and the resurrection. Altar arrangements will consist of greens, pods, and berries arranged in a lovely fashion. Traditional displays of palms and lilies will be in the sanctuary on Palm Sunday and Easter.

Would you like to sponsor an altar arrangement during Lent? Just as with other Sundays, those wishing to honor or memorialize someone by sponsoring a particular Sunday during Lent, may do so by emailing Cheryl Arrington or calling her at 359-6041, ext. 114. You will be reminded that no flowers will appear on these Sundays, and you will be asked if you would like to take the arrangement of greens with you after the 11:00 am service.  If you want to take the arrangement home, the designer will make it portable. With our talented designers preparing these sanctuary altar decorations during the weeks of Lent, these arrangements will be no less beautiful than our usual weekly flowers. The following dates have not yet been reserved: February 17, February 24, March 3, March 10, and the display of palms on March 24.

Journey to Jerusalem

PuFootsteps - youngt on your hiking shoes and get ready for five weeks of exploration. We will  journey towards Jerusalem and walk in Jesus' footsteps. Come join us on Wednesday nights during Lent. We will meet in the fellowship hall beginning at 6:45 pm and go until 7:30 pm. This opportunity is open to Pre-K through 5th grade children. To participate, please email Lori Epps,   Director of Children's Ministries, or call her at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Prom Clothes Needed

Remember your high school prom? A nice meal, seeing your friends all dressed up, Prom the feeling that your high school years were almost over and the future spread out ahead of you? For students at United Methodist Family Services (UMFS) the prom is just as important. This May 18, Reveille's youth ministry is hosting a prom for the day students of UMFS. We will provide music, food, decorations and yes, tuxedos and dresses, to make this night special for those teens whose high school experience is exceptional in many other ways.

The youth group will work on most of these details, but in the next few weeks, you will hear more about opportunities to serve. Right now, please look through your closets for formal dresses and even tuxedos whose waistbands may have shrunk in the few years so that you can no longer wear them. We will need shoes, ties, cummerbunds, and other accessories as well. If you have clothing or items you would like to donate, please email Dwayne in the church office, or call him at 359-6041, ext. 112. We are awaiting a list of clothing and shoe sizes, which will appear in a future Window article. Once the prom is over, we will donate the items we receive to a worthy cause.

Library Under Reconstruction

ReveilLibraryle Memorial Adult Library has been in existence for about 50 years, and has  faithfully served our church with its wonderful selection of books and audiovisual materials. The results of a recent survey of our members suggested that the library be updated, rejuvenated, and physically renovated. A library committee has been set up to oversee suggestions and make recommendations to several professional librarians who are volunteering for this project. The committee is planning a book sale, most likely in the fall, and welcomes your donations. More information is forthcoming.

Volunteers Needed in Library

The Reveille Memorial Adult Library is seeking volunteers to give time in the library on Sunday mornings. The library needs to be staffed from 9:30-10:45 am, plus another half hour following the 11:00 am service. We are hoping to get enough volunteers so that each person would give one Sunday every quarter. The librarian will provide directions as to how to manage the library during this time. Anyone can perform these duties and, in doing so, will become better acquainted with the library and its collection. Please email Carol Ann Estes if you are interested in being a library volunteer.
