Reveille Celebrates Ministry Sunday

with Mauri Bishop

Mauri Bishop
Mauri Bishop

On Sunday, January 27, Mauri Bishop will be our Ministry Sunday speaker. Since 2007, Mauri has served at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. in a number of positions. Currently she is the assistant director for Wesley's Urban Ministry and Missional Church programs. Mauri received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and is currently a Master of Divinity student at Wesley Theological Seminary, specializing in Urban Ministry. As an inquiring candidate for ordination in the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, Mauri intends to pursue ordination as a deacon to build bridges between the church and the world as a nonprofit administrator of healing ministries.

Mauri was nurtured in God's call to ministry by leaders at Asbury United Methodist Church- Washington, D.C., where she became a member in July 2003. Her call to ministry was clarified through engagement in several ministries of the church such as the Missions Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Asbury Performing Arts Theatre, Intercessory Prayer Ministry, and United Methodist Women-Group Esther. She resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband Jaye and daughter Ava.

We are blessed to have Mauri with us for Ministry Sunday, sharing her vision for the call God places on all Christians to give ourselves to God fully. Please keep Mauri in your prayers this week as she prepares to join us on January 27, when she will preach at all three worship services and lead youth group.

Anne Stratton

Retirement Announced

Anne Stratton

Anne Stratton, our administrative manager since 1996, will be retiring from Reveille this spring.

In her position, Anne has been present for the members of the congregation managing the office, supporting nurture, stewardship, and records management, and coordinating set-up for all events.   She has been our "go-to" person for assistance and direction, serving with kindness, effectiveness, and dedication during the tenure of three senior pastors. Among her many Reveille activities, Anne represented the staff as a member of the Building Committee for the addition of our new facilities, interfaced with workers during the renovation of our Fellowship Hall, and served as a Stephen Minister.

Anne is retiring to pursue other interests and has expressed her feelings about how she will miss the congregation as she feels that this "ministry" has been a perfect fit for many years.  Anne says, "A bond has developed between so many members at Reveille and I have made wonderful friends whom I will miss.  This has been a tremendous, enriching position for me for 19 years but it is now time to continue growing and experience additional facets in life. "

We wish Anne all the best in her next endeavors.  Mark your calendar and join us for a reception honoring Anne in the Welcome Center following the worship service on March 17.  Anne will continue full-time through the end of February and remain part-time through March 29.

A search committee composed of Sharon Humphreys, chair, Paige Bell, Margaret Hamilton, and Joe Ramage has been established by the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee to search for a new administrative manager.  Look for the announcement on the Reveille website.

Cornell Glee Club Concert a Great Success!

On January 15 we were honored to host the Cornell University Glee Club, one of the premier male choral groups in the U.S., and their a cappella subset "The Hangovers."  After joining us for Terrific Tuesday dinner, during which they sang "Tallis" (If ye love me, keep my commandments), they entertained over 400 Reveille members and guests for an incredible concert in our sanctuary.  This was the final stop in the Glee Club's 2013 Southeast Tour, and they let out all the stops, performing compositions from the European Renaissance to American spirituals, and closing with a few rousing Cornell songs.  Among the highlights were Nathaniel McEwen (b. 1991) conducting his composition "On Music" in honor of the Glee Club's recently retired director, and the Glee Club's signature work "Ave Maria."  Under the direction of John Rowehl, their sound was polished and warm, with amazingly precise intonation  -- it's no wonder that they placed second of 250 choirs in international competition last summer.

Writing on Facebook about their visit, the Glee Club said "The space was beautiful and spectacular for our sound!  We performed probably the most extensive setlist of our tour, simply because there were few songs we could resist singing in such a great space!  Thanks so much to the Church for their hospitality, and to everyone who came out to the performance."

The Glee Club and concertgoers enjoyed a post-concert reception in the Welcome Center for a time of fellowship (and continued singing).  The Glee Club spent the evening with us in the Youth Center, with the guys singing late into the night.  Many thanks to all at Reveille who made the evening such a great success, particularly Cathy Armistead!

Wednesday Night Meal and Prayer

On Wednesday, January 30th, please join us for our Wonderful Wednesday fellowship meal.  The menu will be roast beef, Caesar salad, broccoli and baby carrots, wild rice with mushroom sauce, freshly baked rolls and pecan pie.  The cost for the meal is $5 for adults and teens, $3 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for anyone under 4. Please make a reservation for dinner here, sign up on the friendship pad during Sunday worship or call the church office at 359-6041 by 3:00 pm on Monday. Click here for upcoming menus and programs for Wednesday night meals.

After the meal, we will hold a prayer service in the chapel at 7:00. We will sing hymns, read scripture and give everyone an opportunity to give whatever concerns you may have to the Lord. As the book of James says, "The prayer of the faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.  Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed."

Volunteers Needed in Library

The Reveille Memorial Adult Library is seeking volunteers to give time in the library on Sunday mornings.  The library needs to be staffed from 9:30am to 10:45am, plus another half hour following the 11:00am service.  We are hoping to get enough volunteers so that each person would give one Sunday every quarter.  The librarian will provide directions as to how to manage the library during this time.  Anyone can perform these duties and, in doing so, will become better acquainted with the library and its collection.  Please e-mail Carol Ann Estes (carolann.estes@comcast.net) if you are interested in being a library volunteer.

United Methodist Day at the General Assembly 2013

We invite you to join us as we celebrate our 21st United Methodist Day at the General Assembly! This is our opportunity to help faith communities become empowered to serve as missionaries of justice, as well as the more traditional missionaries of mercy. United Methodist Day and other avenues of faithful advocacy help us to look beyond mercy ministry to ask: "What caused this problem? What causes hunger? Global warming?" By joining together and establishing relationships with our elected officials , we empower members of our congregations to wonder, "How can I make a difference? How can I be a Good Samaritan in our world to its fullest sense?" This event gives congregations a vehicle for reaching beyond themselves and introduces them to the Social Principles of The United Methodist Church in a meaningful way.

The registration price is $35. Registration includes information packet, hot breakfast, lunch, parking, transportation to the Capitol grounds, and afternoon speakers. Space is limited; you must register by February 1st. Register soon by visiting the Conference web site http://www.vaumc.org; click on EVENTS and go to Feb. 7; use the link on the home page, or go directly to
