Reveille Celebrates Ministry Sunday

with Mauri Bishop

On Sunday, January 27, Mauri Bishop will be our Ministry Sunday speaker. Since 2007, Mauri has served at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. in a number of positions. Currently she is the assistant director for Wesley's Urban Ministry and Missional Church programs. Mauri received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and is currently a Master of Divinity student at Wesley Theological Seminary, specializing in Urban Ministry. As an inquiring candidate for ordination in the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, Mauri intends to pursue ordination as a deacon to build bridges between the church and the world as a nonprofit administrator of healing ministries.

Mauri was nurtured in God's call to ministry by leaders at Asbury United Methodist Church- Washington, D.C., where she became a member in July 2003. Her call to ministry was clarified through engagement in several ministries of the church such as the Missions Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Asbury Performing Arts Theatre, Intercessory Prayer Ministry, and United Methodist Women-Group Esther. She resides in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband Jaye and daughter Ava.

We are blessed to have Mauri with us for Ministry Sunday, sharing her vision for the call God places on all Christians to give ourselves to God fully. Please keep Mauri in your prayers this week as she prepares to join us on January 27, when she will preach at all three worship services and lead youth group.

YOU ARE DOING A FABULOUS JOB GREETING VISITORS...KEEP IT UP!

We are happy to report that 20 people showed up for Reveille Today on Sunday, and the #1 reason they gave for being interested in Reveille was that "so many people greeted us when we visited."  Bravo! Last year, Tom Arthur challenged all of us on Ministry Sunday to the "5-10-5 Rule"...greet 5 people within 10 feet of you within the first 5 minutes of any service or event.  Keep it up...it's working!

GLORIOUS GIFTS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Glorious Gifts 2012 was a huge success.  Our overall goal was $33,715.00, and our sales totaled $25,754.00.  Eight of our mission projects participated this year, and six of them exceeded their goals:  Westview Camperships, UMW Prison Ministry, Rebuilding Together, CARITAS, Stop Hunger Now, and Swansboro Elementary School.  Reveille members will be very active in mission projects in 2013 thanks to your generous support.

Many people helped to make Glorious Gifts so successful, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank them.  David Collett and the Outreach Committee were the ones who spearheaded Glorious Gifts.  Glenda Lewis designed the flyers and set up the on-line shopping option.  Bob Downs coordinated the printing of all the cards, and rounded up the computers and printers for the shopping days.  The chairpersons of each project set up the displays and manned the tables for the shopping days.  Linda White worked to set up the displays and supervised the shopping days.  Anne Stratton printed and folded the flyers and order forms, as well as numerous other tasks.  Ginny McEachern and Alva Haley stuffed the envelopes for the mailings.  Glynis Holcomb ran all the totals and did all the bookkeeping.  Cheryl Arrington, Katie Anthony, and Reveille's custodial staff provided all manner of behind-the-scenes help.  Lucy Davis, Hannah Thompson, and Anne Randal Manspile were literally drafted on the spot to copy order forms and assemble orders.  Susan Collett recruited the volunteers who served as cashiers and card printers during the shopping days, including:  Kay Craven, Brenda Baril, Sarah Ann Reed, Kathy Driver, Peggy Daniels, Linda White, Sheryl Manspile, Susan Creasey, Cindy Baxter, and Carol Ann Lea.  Thank you to all of these people and anyone else who helped with Glorious Gifts.

Help Feed the Homeless

On Thursday, January 24, Reveille members will serve a hot meal of roasted chicken, cheesy potato casserole, green beans and dessert to some of Richmond's homeless population. There are several ways in which you can help.

  • You can provide one of the casseroles. The recipe, with drop-off instructions, can be picked up from the sign-up board in the new welcome center.
  • You can serve at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for an hour or two. Meet at Reveille at 11:00 am to carpool or come to the site directly. If needed, childcare is available while serving the meal; please e-mail Lori Epps at [email protected] or call her at 359-6041.
  • Additionally, the following items are much needed: gallon size baggies, plastic Tupperware-like containers (used containers are fine) and 55 gallon trash bags If you would like to donate any of these items, there will be a collection area by the elevators (on the red carpet) for you to place them. Please look for the sign-up sheet in the new welcome center!

For questions or more information, contact Kay Craven at [email protected]

The cost for the meal is $5 for adults and teens, $3 for children ages 4 to 12 and free for anyone under 4. Library Under Reconstruction

Reveille Memorial Adult Library has been in existence for about 50 years, and has faithfully served our church with its wonderful selection of books and audiovisual materials.  The results of a recent survey of our members suggested that the library be updated, rejuvenated, and physically renovated.  A library committee has been set up to oversee suggestions and make recommendations to several professional librarians who are volunteering for this project.  The committee is planning a book sale, most likely in the fall, and welcomes your donations.  More information is forthcoming.

Volunteers Needed in Library

The Reveille Memorial Adult Library is seeking volunteers to give time in the library on Sunday mornings.  The library needs to be staffed from 9:30am to 10:45am, plus another half hour following the 11:00am service.  We are hoping to get enough volunteers so that each person would give one Sunday every quarter.  The librarian will provide directions as to how to manage the library during this time.  Anyone can perform these duties and, in doing so, will become better acquainted with the library and its collection.  Please e-mail Carol Ann Estes ([email protected]) if you are interested in being a library volunteer.

Start the New Year in Music Ministry!

If you have been meaning to join the choir, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! This is the perfect opportunity to join a choir at Reveille, and here is what we will be working on:

Jesus Christ Superstar: Rehearsals for Congregational Chorus members begin Sunday, January 6: you may attend from 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm, or from 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm, in the choir room. Or if you need a weeknight rehearsal, please email Cathy Armistead, or call 359-6041 x123. Performances will be offered to the Richmond Metropolitan area and beyond in July, 2013, in our sanctuary; we already have a cast of 62 - let's make it 62 more!

Life School Musical: In addition to learning scriptural music for worship services, the Elementary, Primary and Cherub Choirs will be working on their spring musical, "Life School Musical", to be presented three times in April! For the schedule of Children's Choir rehearsals, please click on the Music Calendar, or email Tamara Nicely, Assistant Director of Music.

Messiah, Part III, and Five Mystical Songs: In addition to working on music for worship, the adult Chancel Choir will be learning Messiah: Part III and Ralph Vaughn Williams' Five Mystical Songs, to be presented on May 17 and May 19. Please join us on Thursdays at 7:00 pm for Sunday anthem rehearsal and at 8:00 pm for concert rehearsal. Email Cathy Armistead or call 359-6041 x123.
