Terrific Tuesday Replaces

Wonderful Wednesday for One Week

Reveille Welcomes the Cornell University Glee Club

Wednesday, January 15

Cornell U Glee Club

You will not want to miss Terrific Tuesday on January 15! Come to dinner at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall, then stay for a concert by the Cornell University Glee Club at 7:00 pm, in the sanctuary. We are honored to host this top-notch, 60-voice men's chorus as part of their 2013 Tour of the Southeast. This concert will consist of all-male choral music from a variety of cultures, ranging from compositions of the European Renaissance to American spirituals. In the concert's second half, there will be an appearance by The Hangovers, the a cappella subset of the Glee Club. "Throw out all stereotypes," hailed Arthur Thigpen in The Washington Post on January 11, 2010. "The Cornell University Glee Club has developed a virtuosic choral sound that has far more in common with the King's Singers than 40 college guys. Under the direction of John Rowehl, this ensemble performed with uniform tonal production, clear diction and laserlike intonation to a warmly receptive Saturday night audience at the Kennedy Center."

The Cornell University Glee Club was formed in 1868, has toured the world and has won many accolades; their most recent achievement took place this past summer when the ensemble travelled to Llangollen, Wales, where they garnered the second-highest score out of nearly 250 choirs at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Discerning Membership at Reveille?

Learn More at Reveille Today

All adults who are discerning membership are asked to attend Reveille Today, a class designed by members to help visitors learn more about our church. Reveille Today consists of three sessions over three weeks. These sessions focus on getting to know The United Methodist Church and the congregation at Reveille so you can understand its ministries and the opportunities offered for worship, discipleship and service. Our last session centers on discerning your individual spiritual gifts so you can begin thinking about how you can best serve God and humanity in the church and in the world. The next Reveille Today class begins this Sunday, January 13 and will continue January 20 and 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Reveille House Dining Room. Child care will be provided. Participants in this winter's Reveille Today class will have an opportunity to join on Sunday, February 17. Please register with Katie B. Anthony here or by calling 359-6041, ext. 111.

Youth News

When tragedy strikes, our first question is often, "Why?" Where was God during the shooting at Sandy Hook? What kind of protection does our faith entitle us to? At youth group we will talk about God's presence in the midst of tragedy and the ways our faith sustains and empowers us through tough times, but does not always protect us from them.

The schedule is as follows:

4:30 p.m. middle school youth group/high school choir

5:30 p.m. dinner ($3.00)

6:00 p.m. high school youth group/middle school choir

Start the New Year in Music Ministry!

If you have been meaning to join the choir, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE! This is the perfect opportunity to join a choir at Reveille, and here is what we will be working on:

Jesus Christ Superstar: Rehearsals for Congregational Chorus members began Sunday, January 6: you may attend from 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm, or from 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm, in the choir room. Or if you need a weeknight rehearsal, please email Cathy Armistead, or call 359-6041 x123. Performances will be offered to the Richmond Metropolitan area and beyond in July, 2013, in our sanctuary; we already have a cast of 62 - let's make it 62 more!

Life School Musical: In addition to learning scriptural music for worship services, the Elementary, Primary and Cherub Choirs will be working on their spring musical, "Life School Musical", to be presented three times in April! For the schedule of Children's Choir rehearsals, please click on the Music Calendar, or email Tamara Nicely, Assistant Director of Music.

Messiah, Part III, and Five Mystical Songs: In addition to working on music for worship, the adult Chancel Choir will be learning Messiah: Part III and Ralph Vaughn Williams' Five Mystical Songs, to be presented on May 17 and May 19. Please join us on Thursdays at 7:00 pm for Sunday anthem rehearsal and at 8:00 pm for concert rehearsal. Email Cathy Armistead or call 359-6041 x123.

Help Feed the Homeless

On Thursday, January 24, Reveille members will serve a hot meal of roasted chicken, cheesy potato casserole, green beans and dessert to some of Richmond's homeless population. There are several ways in which you can help.

  • You can provide one of the casseroles. The recipe, with drop-off instructions, can be picked up from the sign-up board in the new welcome center.
  • You can serve at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for an hour or two. Meet at Reveille at 11:00 am to carpool or come to the site directly. If needed, childcare is available while serving the meal; please e-mail Lori Epps at children@reveilleumc.org or call her at 359-6041.
  • Additionally, the following items are much needed: gallon size baggies, plastic Tupperware-like containers (used containers are fine) and 55 gallon trash bags If you would like to donate any of these items, there will be a collection area by the elevators (on the red carpet) for you to place them. Please look for the sign-up sheet in the new welcome center!

Kay Craven shares the joy she receives

while Feeding the Homeless

"Time to flip my calendar over to a new month. What do I have coming up? Oh! The fourth Thursday of each month is Friends of the Homeless. I've got to put that on my calendar because I don't want to miss serving lunch." This is a conversation I have with myself each month because I LOVE serving lunch for Friends of the Homeless. When I can, I like to make one of the ten potato casseroles needed per meal. This can be done ahead of time and delivered to Reveille at my convenience. When I help serve the hot meal at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, I join other volunteers at Reveille at 10:45 am, load up the vehicles and head downtown to serve a lunch at noon for 150 -200 people. Reveille outreach funds provide chicken and green beans which are prepared ahead of time. Bread and dessert are provided by local bakeries. Once there, we dish out food for the very appreciative folks. I see some of the same faces each month. Everyone is very friendly and greets us with a smile. I feel like I am getting more out of it than they are. I come away feeling joyful that I have been able to help others but mostly feeling overwhelmed because many of the people bless me and thank me for my generosity. These people have a warm, dry place to come to and have a hot meal, possibly their only meal of the day. We are back at Reveille by 1:00 pm so it is only about a two hour commitment. So next time you turn your calendar over to a new month, look at the fourth Thursday and see if you can squeeze Friends of the Homeless into your busy schedule. You won't regret it.

To help with the hot meal on January 24th, contact Kay Craven at 283-1803 or cravendk@aol.com.
