Parents' Mix and Mingle
This Sunday, December 2
Parents of children nursery age through fifth grade are invited to attend a Mix and Mingle this Sunday, December 2, 5:00-6:00 pm. Come to the fellowship hall to meet Lori Epps, Director of Children's Ministries, and to help create a vision for the direction of our children's program. Lori wants to hear your hopes and dreams for our children. If you have ideas on how to make our programs even better, please plan to attend. This will be an informal time of fellowship and discussion. Let's look towards the future and continue to create opportunities for our children to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and one another.

The Service of Remembrance:
Help for the Holidays
Holidays can be difficult for those coping with grief and loss. On Sunday, December 9, our annual Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 pm in the chapel. We will remember our loved ones through the lighting of candles and the reading of names. We will sing hymns, pray, read scripture and have a short meditation to bring us hope, comfort and strength. As the French poet Paul Claudel said, "Jesus did not come to explain away suffering or remove it. He came to fill it with his presence."
No matter what your grief or however long you have borne it, we invite you to join us.

Youth News
Friendships are hard and sometimes friends just can't get along. This Sunday night, December 2, our youth group will talk about friendships and ways to address the tensions and struggles that arise with our friends.
Our schedule is normal:
4:30 pm - Middle school youth group/
high school choir
5:30 pm - Dinner ($3)
6:00 pm - High school youth group/middle school choir
On Sunday, December 9, the youth group will enjoy our annual Christmas party. The Bullock family will host this party at their home. Each youth should bring an inexpensive (around $5) wrapped, gender-neutral gift for a Thieves Christmas exchange. The party will begin at 5:30 pm, immediately after the combined youth choir rehearsal.
Parents: If you can help with transportation, please email Dwayne.

Shop for Glorious Gifts
Online or In-person
Glorious Gifts is an alternative marketplace where one may "buy" gifts in honor of friends and loved ones. These gifts will support eight of Reveille's outreach ministries. Shopping is already happening online at www.reveilleumc.org/gg and will continue until December 31.
Shop for Glorious Gifts in person in the welcome center from 9:00 - 11:30 am on Sundays, December 9 and December 16. Shopping lists are available in the sanctuary narthex, fellowship hall and church office.
The eight outreach ministries participating in Glorious Gifts this year are Friends of Barnabas (Honduras Medical Mission Trip in July, 2013), CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter), Friends of the Homeless, Rebuilding Together of Richmond, United Methodist Women Prison Ministry, Westview on the James Camperships, Stop Hunger Now, and Swansboro Elementary School. Below we highlight two of these organizations.
PRISON MINISTRY
Reveille's Prison Ministry Team formed a partnership with The Chesterfield Women's Detention and Diversion Center. Members of Reveille serve as mentors, purchase materials for classrooms and teach a 4-week series of Healthy Living classes each month. Currently, the inmates are involved in knitting classes. The hats, scarfs, and small blankets made are sent to area nursing homes for residents to enjoy.
SWANSBORO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Reveille has a partnership with Swansboro Elementary School. It started with providing mentors to work one-to-one with students, as well as awarding camperships to students who want to attend camp at Westview-on-the-James for a week in the summer.
Swansboro is located in South Richmond and has an enrollment of 330 students, 90% of whom are "known" to social services due to their need for various helping services. Reveille member Laura Holdych is championing the effort for Reveille to take a more active role at Swansboro School. Volunteers from Reveille now serve as library helpers, guest readers, and classroom helpers. In addition, several Reveille families helped with the recent Swansboro Fall Festival.
This is the first year for Swansboro to be a participant in Glorious Gifts. Our gifts will help provide supplies for the Swansboro teachers.

Women's Shelter Gift Bag Drive
December 2-19
Donations of travel-sized toiletries and new or gently-used jewelry, accessories, gloves and scarves are needed to fill gift bags for women living in area shelters and detention centers. A marked box is in the welcome center for your donations and will remain until December 19. Plan to bring your family to Wonderful Wednesday on December 19 and stay after dinner to help load gift bags. Kids can enjoy a pajama party, watch a Christmas movie and do crafts.
If you can help or have any questions, please email Jennifer McCluskey or call her at 359-6041, ext. 121.
|
Children's Christmas PJ Party
Children of all ages are welcome to join us on Wednesday, December 19 following the Wonderful Wednesday dinner for a Christmas PJ Party. Come dressed in your Christmas pajamas and bring your pillow and blanket as we snuggle up to watch a Christmas movie together. First, we will make some Christmas crafts, as well as enjoy some Happy Birthday Jesus cake together. Join us as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
|
It's Time to Trim the Pair Trees
Help trim Reveille's pair trees with donations of pairs: pairs of warm socks, mittens, and gloves, along with hats, undershirts, and underwear. These items will be distributed to the children of Swansboro.
The pair trees are located near the weekday school office and in the welcome center. There also is a collection box for pair tree items in the fellowship hall.
Please hang your donation on one of the trees or place it in the box by Sunday, December 23. If you have questions, please email Susan Creasey or call the church office at 359-6041, ext. 117.

Held Needed at Coffee Fellowship
Since being moved to the welcome center, coffee fellowship has been a big success. The nurture and congregational care committee very much appreciate all of those who have served as hosts and hostesses in the past six months.
As we continue this fellowship in the next year, there is an opportunity for more to serve in this ministry. Snacks and coffee are provided by the church; we simply need folks to make coffee beginning at 9:00 am, serve light snacks at 10:30 and clean up afterwards. More detailed instructions are available upon request.
Coffee fellowship is an important hospitality ministry of our church and it is an opportunity for small groups, Sunday school classes or anyone to serve. Please email Evelyn Wilson or call the church office at 359-6041, ext. 115 if you have any questions or can help.

Your Grocery Shopping Supports Youth Missions
If the cha-ching of the supermarket cash register frustrates you each week, let your spending make a difference. Reveille's youth are offering Kroger Cares cards. These $5 gift cards function like debit cards. You purchase one for $5 from Reveille. Take it to the customer service desk at Kroger and add up to $500 to the card (using cash or a credit or debit card). Then use the card to purchase your groceries. Each time you recharge your card by adding more money, Reveille's youth mission fund gets 5% of the total - money that will support our youth mission trips. The more you spend, the more Reveille receives. It's a win-win situation.
Kroger Cares cards will be available in the welcome center during Glorious Gifts on December 9 and 16. In addition, you may purchase a card from Dwayne Stinson in the church office. If you have questions, please email Dwayne or call him at 359-6041, ext. 122.

Music Specials Coming in 2013
On January 15 we will celebrate Terrific Tuesday, in place of Wonderful Wednesday for just this one week. The Cornell University Glee Club is coming to Reveille to perform the final concert on their winter tour at 7:00 pm in our sanctuary.
This 45-voice all-male a cappella group was formed in the mid-1800's and has toured all over the world. In the early 1960's, they toured Asia and performed for 100 million people. This is a must-come opportunity: be sure to see this dynamic group live in our sanctuary!
Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed at Reveille in July 2013 by our youth choir and you. Please sign up here or email Cathy Armistead to be part of this monumental event! Rehearsals will begin January 6, on Sunday evenings, or Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. The cast already numbers 62; let's make it 62 more!

Order Christmas Poinsettias Now

To place a poinsettia in honor of or in memory of someone, please complete the order form (available in the sanctuary narthex, welcome center, fellowship hall and church office), combine it with payment and turn them in with your offering this Sunday or send them to the church office. The deadline is Wednesday, December 12.

Two Ways to Support UMFS
This Advent and Christmas season, Reveille is providing two opportunities to support UMFS (formerly known as United Methodist Family Services). First, you may make monetary donations to our Annual Christmas Outreach Offering, which will benefit UMFS as in years past. Donation forms are available in the sanctuary narthex, chapel, fellowship hall and church office. Complete a donation form and add your check or cash gift. If using a check, please make it payable to Reveille UMC and reference it "Christmas Outreach." Place the form and gift in the collection plate on Sunday or send it to the church office. Donations received by December 16 will be included in the listing of poinsettias and outreach offerings in a worship bulletin insert on December 23. A second way to benefit UMFS is coming up. We have an opportunity to brighten a student's Christmas morning by providing gifts for him or her. Wish lists will hang from the UMFS Angel Tree in the fellowship hall beginning December 2. Bring unwrapped presents during the offering at The Point December 16 or drop them off in the marked box in the fellowship hall December 2 through 16. UMFS, located just a few blocks from our church, touches the lives of 10,000 families and children throughout Virginia annually. Hundreds of children in Virginia are removed from their homes each year due to abuse and neglect. Given their experiences, many of these children need additional supervision, stability, and care. UMFS provides foster care and therapeutic treatment services to children and teens.
UMFS has learned what it takes to bring a troubled teen back from the brink. We can help carry on their mission to "Touch a life. Create a future." Donation forms for our annual Christmas Outreach Offering are available in the sanctuary narthex, welcome center, fellowship hall and church office. Donations received by December 16 will be included in the listing of poinsettias and outreach offerings in a worship bulletin insert on December 23. |
2013 Flower Calendar Opens December 1
For those wishing to place flowers on the sanctuary altar or chapel altar on a Sunday, the 2013 flower calendar will open Saturday, December 1. You may call Cheryl Arrington at 359-6041, ext. 114 to sign-up on or after that date. Requests left on voice mail will be honored in the order in which they arrived, as will orders received during business hours. The cost for sanctuary or chapel flowers is $35.
In fairness to everyone, no reservations will be taken before December 1.

Got Pictures?
Do you always have a camera handy for that special shot? If so, the Communications Committee wants to enlist your help in building our photo gallery. Especially needed are group shots of Reveille members and friends of all ages engaged in the wide variety of ministries available to them - from musical groups, to service projects, to discipleship opportunities and everything in between.
These photos may be used in Reveille's print or electronic publications, including our website. Please confine your photos of anyone under 18 years of age to group shots only. Anyone over the age of 18 may be photographed individually.
If you already have a collection you would like to share (taken within the current year), please email them to [email protected]. Gmail can receive attachments up to 25MB. If you have a camera phone, take a picture and email it to us instantly!
