Summer Classics Strikes Deal for New Facilities
MONTEVALLO, ALABAMA
From Shelby County ReporterThe Summer Classics furniture company could finalize its move into the former Moore Handley building in Pelham as early as August 2014, the company's chief executive officer said after he signed off on a deal to purchase the building. Summer Classics CEO Bew White joined city and county officials at Pelham City Hall on July 30 to finalize the company's agreement to purchase the former Moore Handley building, which has sat vacant for several years. Summer Classics will consolidate its three Montevallo facilities and its current Pelham showroom in the former Moore Handley building. White said the new location will allow the company to better brand itself. "It's a branding opportunity for us," White said. "Plus, it will cut down on the driving we have to do between facilities. We produce 2,000 cushions a day, and they have to go somewhere." Summer Classics is planning to construct a 10,000-square-foot showroom on the front of the former Moore Handley building, and will consolidate its Montevallo manufacturing and storage locations in the existing part of the building. The new showroom will mirror Summer Classics' current showroom, which is off Hinds Street.

Cloud Nine from Brown Jordan/Richard Frinier Receives GOOD DESIGN Award
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
In keeping with a long and lauded heritage of design innovation, legacy brand and leading outdoor furniture manufacturer Brown Jordan and internationally acclaimed veteran designer Richard Frinier proudly announce they have received a coveted GOOD DESIGN Award. The award program, sponsored by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, along with its distinguished design jury, have named Cloud Nine, a modern indoor/outdoor furniture collection, as an original and award-winning creation in the furniture category.
"It is a privilege to be recognized with this prestigious award and to share this honor with Brown Jordan. It is especially meaningful to me as I am celebrating over 30 years of design, and Brown Jordan is where I started my career in the outdoor furniture industry," said Richard Frinier. "I actually feel a lot like the question I posed when I was creating this design - What would happen if you had the time to be still and allowed your mind to drift ... would it feel like you were on Cloud Nine?"
The Cloud Nine Collection illustrates modernity for its study of curvaceous and continuous organic lines captivating the eye and inspiring the imagination. Designed to represent a glimpse of the future, it is combined with a clever infusion of what is functional and comfortable today. Sling seating surfaces incorporate Brown Jordan's proprietary Parabolic fabric, a focal point of the Cloud Nine design, while the frames innovatively capture the tautly upholstered parabolic stretch fabric to create an amazing aesthetic form, function, comfort and experience.
The Good Design Award program is organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dating back to 1950, it is now regarded as one of the world's largest and most distinguished design competitions.
Founded by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., this highly anticipated and international design competition bestows global recognition upon the world's most prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new, visionary and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for pushing the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design.
The Cloud Nine design may be seen at Brown Jordan showrooms and also to the trade at the upcoming Fall High Point Market in High Point, North Carolina, October 2013.
